TheFiend7··on Amazon’s new health band is the most invasive tech we’ve ever tested
So you have to pay for the hardware, and to access all the data generated by the hardware you then need to pay a service fee.
TheFiend7··on Laid Off, Now What?
I'm not necessarily anti coding interviews, but somehow convincing yourself there is any degree of innate talent is a myth. There is a linear relationship between practice and performance. It's as simple as that. Some people are privileged with better resources to practice more effectively, but at the end of the day, it comes down to who has done it more.
TheFiend7··on ‘We were shocked’: RAND study uncovers income shift to the top% (cont)
It will persist until civil unrest reaches unsustainable levels. Who knows when that will be and what they may entail.
TheFiend7··on Red flags I saw while doing technical interviews
I've been a software engineer for over 6 years and I still have to do 20+ interviews.
TheFiend7··on Ask HN: Getting depressed about money. How do I make a meaningful amount “fast”?
This is always where I land. If you fail try try again, with effort and critical thought. But I just can't meaningfully dedicate the time to making more money at the expense of all the hobbies and other past times I love doing so much. I don't want to spend 20 years with hardly any enjoyment just to be able to retire at 55 instead of 70 or something.

It's a challenging decision to make and I also believe in most cases it isn't a decision that is "free" or without some form of consequences. All things come at a cost.

TheFiend7··on Write code that is easy to delete, not easy to extend (2016)
Funnily enough I usually experience the opposite. I've worked with very heavy systems and very light systems, and I always find more stability with the really light weight stuff. Obviously there are more bugs at first, but once you go through your first wave of code fixes I'm usually sitting pretty for awhile until I change more stuff.
TheFiend7··on The Atlantic lays off almost 20% of staff
Can't gauge if you're being sarcastic or serious honestly.
TheFiend7··on Ask HN: Ways to generate income when you're at home without pay?
If it isn't their profession/field and they don't need the money either way. Yeah I would still consider it a favor.

I pay the people who house sit and watch my pets, I still consider it a favor in addition to paying them.

TheFiend7··on SoftBank Backs Away from Part of Planned WeWork Bailout
Forgive my ignorance, but why is WeWork a PoS? I don't have much awareness on the situation.
TheFiend7··on Uber drivers say earnings are falling, and many have no other income
Uber has been bleeding money for awhile now. What has kept them afloat is the fact that people keep using them and their fleet of drivers. But if people stop doing that, it's going to get real hairy for Uber and Lyft.
TheFiend7··on Facebook is giving $1k to every employee
Hahaha life is exceptionally easy for people in the US. I had no idea working 2 service jobs and living paycheck to paycheck was the good life!
TheFiend7··on Firm wielding Theranos patents asks judge to block coronavirus test
I was confused when I initially went through the patent and got caught up on one specific part. If you bothered to even open the patent they're incredibly cryptic and IANAL.

Here is part of the claims section, starting around "pgs 47/48", and all of it looks like this.

"A two-way communication system for detecting an ana lyte in a bodily fluid from a subject, comprising:

a) a reader assembly comprising a programmable proces Sor that is operably linked to a communication assem bly:

b) an external device configured to transmit a protocol to the communication assembly; detection assembly for detecting said signal which is transmitted via said communication assembly to said external device.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the reader assembly further comprises a controller having computer-executable commands for performing the reaction at a designated point of-care location.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the external device fur ther comprises a means for receiving and aggregating a plu 45

c) a test device configured to be inserted into the reader assembly, said test device comprising:

i) a sample collection unit configured for collecting a sample of bodily fluid Suspected to contain an analyte;

ii) an assay assembly containing reactants that react with said sample of bodily fluid based on the protocol transmitted from said external device to yield a detect able signal indicative of the presence and/or concen tration of said analyte; and iii) an identifier that is configured to provide the identity of said test device and is also configured to trigger the transmission of said protocol that is selected"

So yeah, super generic.

TheFiend7··on Chinese scientists destroyed proof of virus in December?
All I said was things don't add up. If anything we agree in some regards?
TheFiend7··on Firm wielding Theranos patents asks judge to block coronavirus test
See below.
TheFiend7··on Chinese scientists destroyed proof of virus in December?
How does a disease that's close to 3x more contagious than the flu stop at 80k people in the densely populated cities of China?

The current numbers are the ones that don't add up. Even John Hopkins estimates up to 500k cases in the US at the moment.

TheFiend7··on Firm wielding Theranos patents asks judge to block coronavirus test
Sure but lets not lose sight of the problem here, which is the system's severe abuse. Regardless of if it's a pandemic or not.

Though arguably if a company went ahead and leaped into action and saved millions of lives, when the patent holder didn't lift a finger. There is some debate on whether or not that should be punished and how that should be handled.

TheFiend7··on Firm wielding Theranos patents asks judge to block coronavirus test
Unbelievable. This was the patent they were able to get. It comes with graphs describing an "architecture" of their "unique" medical device.

Patent #8,283,155 "Specifically, the present invention provides portable medical devices that allow real-time detection of analytes from a biological fluid."

and is described as by the article

"This patent describes a generic architecture for a machine that automates testing for the presence of substances in bodily fluids. In the system described by the patent, an operator inserts a "test device" (which contains both the bodily fluid to be tested and the reactants required to perform the test) into a "reader device." The reader device then triggers the necessary chemical reactions to perform the test and reports the results. Theranos' patent isn't limited to any specific bodily fluid, reactants, or testing protocol."

TheFiend7··on One way to fight a coronavirus recession: $1k for every American
I honestly don't believe people that aren't disabled that don't work or do anything should receive free money in the form of a handout. I.e. you don't get a refund if you aren't paying taxes.

I'm all for reduced taxes though in some regards. So we agree in some areas and not others.

TheFiend7··on Millions holed up at home as U.S. routines shift profoundly
We're in an area with high confirmed #s of infected and we have full time WFH employees.

I'm preparing to leave and already have an interview with another company.

TheFiend7··on One way to fight a coronavirus recession: $1k for every American
Fair but you just completely ignored the second half of my comment. Instead of handing out money, don't take it in the first place?
TheFiend7··on Millions holed up at home as U.S. routines shift profoundly
Yet my software company refuses to even let people do voluntary WFH. Amazing.
TheFiend7··on One way to fight a coronavirus recession: $1k for every American
The whole idea of UBI is honestly pretty idiotic. Any form of UBI should 1000% be in the form of benefits, goods, housing, or other physical goods.

I'd much rather have tax cuts to reduce money lost through the middle man, as the middle man always wants a cut. Meaning you'd lose far more money to the process than if you were to just reduce taxes.

TheFiend7··on Why some governments appear not to be acting on the Covid-19 threat
This mentality is just false. If more people of the general populous have masks, how does that not reduce transmission therefore flatten the curve?

Now I understand the logic behind there being shortages. But saying that the general populous shouldn't wear masks because it doesn't do anything doesn't sound accurate.

Awesome read.
TheFiend7··on Coronavirus has disrupted supply chains for nearly 75% of U.S. companies
100%, OP completely changed the tone and contents of their comment. Like night and day.
TheFiend7··on Coronavirus has disrupted supply chains for nearly 75% of U.S. companies
Honestly you're coming off far more extremist than OP is.

OP's just arguing that in times of strife, we could potentially suffer because of a lack of self-reliance. He has a valid point, and should another even worse and longer lasting zoonotic(or any kind) disease spur up again, do you honestly think it's a good idea to make no steps towards developing emergency self-reliance systems in case of catastrophe? What about in times of war even, or other conflicts from upstream suppliers?

You're kinda putting words in OP's mouth and coming off as somewhat naive.

EDIT: Wow you really changed the tone and content of your comment. I'm glad you recognized the flaws in what you were saying and adjusted it, but I'm also semi concerned your original comment is your actual opinion on the matter.

TheFiend7··on Covid-19 is now officially a pandemic, WHO says
This is so culturally unhealthy IMO and it's why America and similar academic oriented countries work work work until they die. It's like 1 year of being off course people act like their lives are going to end.
TheFiend7··on A Peek Into Graviton2
One year of a a1.2xlarge 8vcpu 16gb RAM costs $1782.144 excluding storage. I could build a pretty decent server with that money that would last easily half a decade if not longer.

I could double the cores and mem probably too.
