TheAdamist··on Twitter kills its San Francisco headquarters, will relocate to South Bay
Thats generally the point with sudden disruptive moves - high attrition. Reduce the headcount without having to be in the news for layoffs.
TheAdamist··on Meetup triples subscription price with less than a months notice
Were you grandfathered in at a lower rate or something? I was paying $89.99 for 6 months back in 2018. Which was a completely ridiculous rate for a few meetups a year with a dozen or so people.

Cancelled meetup shortly thereafter and migrated the regulars to a Facebook group.

Then COVID basically killed the group anyway.

TheAdamist··on SIMD-accelerated computer vision on a $2 microcontroller
Based on the recent post about the disposable Montreal subway tickets with a super cheap nfc chip (and amusingly on a paper ticket with a a printed on fake smart chip connection) it should be super cheap to have an automated kiosk that pairs your drink order to a paper cup that when a barista swipes shows your cup your order shows up or fills it automatically.

TheAdamist··on Slack wants to become the 'long-term memory' for organizations
My enterprise employer instituted retention policies on slack, so it couldn't be long term storage. I imagine any other large companies would be the same.

Of course then we switched to teams which isnt as useful for finding anything, so that problem is solved /s.

TheAdamist··on North Dakota voters just approved an age limit for congressional candidates
Welfare for lawyers, with as blatantly unconstitutional as this is.
TheAdamist··on lsix: Like "ls", but for images
I find the split screen capability very useful for terminal use, but i'm only a more basic user
TheAdamist··on Elon Musk fires Tesla's entire supercharger team
Pink, actually.
TheAdamist··on I Built an Ld_preload Worm
LD_AUDIT is even more interesting, and lesser known. It will load even before preload, and has handy hooks for everything that the loader does. https://man7.org/linux/man-pages/man7/rtld-audit.7.html

And had some nasty easy to exploit privilege escalation problems a while ago, https://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=cve-2010-3847

TheAdamist··on F42 Change Proposal: Fedora Plasma Workstation (System-Wide)
Current status field was showing last updated 2024-04-01 for me, has been updated since then as i check now though. I don't see a created timestamp.
TheAdamist··on F42 Change Proposal: Fedora Plasma Workstation (System-Wide)
Announcing this on april first makes it difficult to parse if this is a serious proposal or not. It appears to be, but maybe i'm missing the joke.

Personally no experience with kde plasma, but i'd love something more usable than gnome 3. Mate/xfce are my go-to options when they aren't completely broken as shipped by a distro.

TheAdamist··on Reddit CEO defends $193M compensation following backlash from unpaid moderators
The CEO is paid $193M, this has nothing to do with any profit reddit makes.

Which, they have never made a profit, "Now, Reddit — which is not yet profitable"......"Reddit reported a net loss of $90.8 million in 2023, a narrower loss than the $158.6 million loss it netted in 2022." https://www.cnn.com/2024/02/23/tech/reddit-ipo-filing-busine...

TheAdamist··on TV Station Launches Multiple 4K Broadcasts OTA on ATSC 1.0 [video]
Cool, realtime fuzzing of atsc 1.0 hardware that is long since supported.
TheAdamist··on Cloudflare loses 22% of its domains in Freenom .tk shutdown
Interesting, .xyz was by far higher on my list of disreputable spam domains.

I'd be happy with that one shut down too.

TheAdamist··on Class Action Against General Motors LLC, OnStar LLC, LexisNexis Risk Solutions [pdf]
Time to pop it in a data usage heavy device for free data.

The bbc or someone has had at least one article about a bird tracking device that operated via cellular and a sim that expected 5k or less data a month suddenly started charging gigs a month in their home continent just after the last natural looking flight of the bird ended, the ornithological society involved had a few shock bills.

TheAdamist··on A 7k-Pound Car Smashed Through a Guardrail. That's Bad News for All of Us
You want to talk insane?

TheAdamist··on Cellular outage in U.S. hits AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon users
Which is pretty much what down detector has evolved into. And it looks like they have an enterprise offering to alert companies to their own issues.
TheAdamist··on Trader makes $3M from $150k in 30 minutes
15 million subscribers to wall street bets.

One person has pulled this off.

Outlier luck seems more likely than skill.

TheAdamist··on Cellular outage in U.S. hits AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon users
This reminds me of the recent discussion on status pages. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39099980

They need to be accurate. At&t status claims everything is fine.

My wireless service is down. Down detector has tens of thousands of reports, so clearly everything is not fine.

TheAdamist··on Try to make sudo less vulnerable to Rowhammer attacks
Is there any reason for the void cast here? Theres no return value in use.

(void)strlcpy(des_pass, pass,sizeof(des_pass));

TheAdamist··on Show HN: Built a self hosted clean status page and batteries
It should be timely as well, reddits status page will happily show all green while down detector for reddit shows huge spikes in error reporting.

Which doesn't make for a super useful status page.

TheAdamist··on User of LG washing machine spotted that it spent 11Gb of traffic (mostly upload)
This was originally from Twitter, but i haven't seen any informed technical discussion on the topic.

If the original reporter could grab a packet capture this would be solvable instead of a bunch of speculation.

Although in the typical home setup with a combo modem/router and a WiFi washing machine that isn't easy to setup a packet capture.

I have a second wifi AP and a semi smart switch that i think can run a span port which i could rig to do the job, but most people don't.

TheAdamist··on Meetup has been acquired by Bending Spoons
Meetup is so absurdly expensive for a glorified calendar and email list that they have driven away every group except for tech company sponsored ones.

$180/year for the cheapest plan drove me away. Facebook groups let you do a similar thing for free.

TheAdamist··on Google Cuts Jobs in Engineering and Other Divisions
I'm a big fan of the pixel series, if they wind up dropping it or make upcoming hardware terrible its likely to drive me to iphone unfortunately.

The various third party android phones have severe drawbacks in their manufacturers tweaked android or inferior hardware.

TheAdamist··on Apple exec defends 8GB $1,599 MacBook Pro, claims it's like 16GB on a PC
16GB pc isn't even the correct comparison, on apple its 8GB unified between cpu+gpu+more.

The 16GB pc equivalent, especially for equivalent pricing of a mbp is going to have a video card with dedicated vram in addition. A $1549 dell xps has a 6GB Nvidia card, with options for 4GB-8GB cards.

8GB equivalent to 22GB is the real comparison we should be making and the answer is obviously no. Especially with all the other io performance cuts apple has been making.

Now you will say theres far more bloatware on the windows laptop, especially in a corporate environment necessitating all that ram, and thats true.

For light use 8gb would be plenty, but its not going to cut it for power users.

Im also curious what the "memory compression" they use is, i would imagine its similar to linux compressed in memory swap. Unless they are just talking standard gpu texture compression and such.

TheAdamist··on Nokia to erase up to 14,000 employees from payroll
It doesn't work out well for the company in the end in the movie either.

Works out great for milton though.

TheAdamist··on Ask HN: What is your experience with Nano-Hydroxyapatite toothpaste?
Which sensodyne and which country is it from? Their product lines seems intentionally opaque.
TheAdamist··on Why don’t Americans eat mutton?
My local costco sells large boxes of frozen cubed goat meat, and maybe entire goats. (Theres occasionally something large wrapped in burlap next to where the goat cubes are stored in the freezer).

I don't have a need for a 15 pound box much less whole animal, so haven't bought it. Will get a duck from them later this fall though.

TheAdamist··on Amazon devices unit morale wanes amid cuts, weak development pipeline
I'm a big fan of Amazon's fire tablets, great name brand value for the sub $200 price. Fire 11 doesn't even feel slow like previous years models did. I mainly use it for streaming and other media consumption.

Having a microsd card is great for offline media in this day and a rarity. Although im sad they killed the 3.5mm jack. Usbc headphone adapters are a bit glitchy and block the charging port.

I hope they keep making & updating the tablets and kindles, but theres no other alexa enabled device i've ever been interested in.

TheAdamist··on Tesla’s new car-building process could be an industrial breakthrough
The repairability / ability to replace these giant castings doesn't seem to come up in these articles. Are the cars just going to be disposable if minor damage occurs?

Insurance companies are already writing off damaged Teslas because of repairability issues and this would seem to make the problem worse.

New car price may go down, but insurance may skyrocket, so not necessarily an overall win.

TheAdamist··on Xfce Wayland Development Roadmap
MATE is my preferred environment, but is it even viable anymore?

Despite being in the package list for fedora(?) on recent versions, It fails to install and talk on the bug thread is just to remove the packages from the repo.
