This was originally from Twitter, but i haven't seen any informed technical discussion on the topic.

If the original reporter could grab a packet capture this would be solvable instead of a bunch of speculation.

Although in the typical home setup with a combo modem/router and a WiFi washing machine that isn't easy to setup a packet capture.

I have a second wifi AP and a semi smart switch that i think can run a span port which i could rig to do the job, but most people don't.

Simple soution: Don't connect it to your wifi. Ask if a connection is required before you buy it. If so, buy one that doesn't require it.

There is no logical need for a network connection to wash clothes or keep your food cold. Excuses to the contrary are thinly veiled BS to justify spying.
