Teslazar··on History of Video Games (1940's – 2010's) – list of firsts
Good point. I guess I could have said first modem-based multiplayer 3D first-person shooter or something like that. Being able to play against friends across town was great.

I actually played multiplayer Maze War at the Living Computer Museum on a Xerox Alto in 2017: https://photos.app.goo.gl/VUVXQ1cG3zWAMWY3A Right is a real Alto and the other two are emulated. The three were running a multiplayer game.

Teslazar··on History of Video Games (1940's – 2010's) – list of firsts
This is interesting but the site is missing many important game technologies and incorrectly attributing some.

The site lists Descent 3 as being the first to have procedural texturing and yet Unreal had it in 1998.

Doom is only listed as "first game to present panoramic skies". Doom may have been the first to have ambient lighting and built to be moddable. Probably also the first LAN-based multiplayer 3D first-person shooter.

Quake is only listed as "advanced 3D first person shooter" and yet Quake had many technologies that were probably firsts as well. First ip-ip client-server 3d first person shooter, first true 3D environments in first-person shooter, first to use pre-generated lighting in combination with dynamic lighting using a surface cache, and probably more.

I may have some of these wrong, but you get the idea. The site is missing a lot.

Teslazar··on Artificial pancreas successful in type 2 diabetes tests
"less time managing their condition", is such an incredibly low bar.

Edit: I'd like to see this contrasted with dietary changes and other lifestyle changes. Also, the words "artificial" and "pancreas" do not appear in the study.

Teslazar··on Linux 6.3 to Remove Obsolete GPU Drivers: ATI Rage 128, 3Dfx, S3 Savage, I810
I recall John Carmack contributing to some of these drivers, especially the ATI Rage driver. I think it's the driver being removed.

Here's an example of his forum posts from 2000 related to working on some of these drivers: https://web.archive.org/web/20000816145733/http://lists.sour...

Poke around here for more:

Teslazar··on Assembly Optimization Tips (2004)
This should have (2004) in the title.
Teslazar··on Remaking old computer graphics with AI image generation
Is there a way to have current AI tools maintain consistency when generating multiple images of a specific creature or object? For example, if there are images of 'Dr. Venom' they need to look similar, or if there are images of the same space ship.
Teslazar··on Gripes with RSS after one week
This article seems to imply that RSS users need to manually locate the RSS feeds. In all the RSS clients I've used, I just add the site by the main URL and it automatically finds the RSS feed if there is one, and this almost always works.
Teslazar··on Ask HN: What is the best podcast you listened to in 2022?
Hidden Brain

A Slight Change of Plans

Indie Hackers

Darknet Diaries

Teslazar··on The genius of binary space partitioning in Doom (2019)
I think you're referring to Michael Abrash's Ramblings in Realtime articles which were written about Quake. When I was a teen I used to carry these around with me and read them over and over while I was implementing my own engine.

Copies are available here: https://www.bluesnews.com/abrash/

Teslazar··on RIP Google Hangouts, Google’s last, best chance to compete with iMessage
Can you use two browser profiles, one for personal and one for business? Or, if it goes beyond the browser, perhaps two OS users?
Teslazar··on Ask HN: I’m 41 and still unmarried – what should I do?
I suggest reading 'How to Not Die Alone' by Logan Ury. It's an excellent book that will probably answer some of your questions.
Teslazar··on What Happened to RSS?
Some of my RSS feeds have ads in them.
Teslazar··on Tell HN: I'm 18 years old today
Read a variety of books. I read a lot when I was younger but regret that I stuck to a couple of genres and missed out on learning a lot more had I read a greater variety of books, something I did much later in life.
Teslazar··on I'm not an anti-vaxxer but vaccine passports treat me like I am (anaphylactic)
Perhaps the title of this article should be "I had an allergic reaction to my 1st shot and am unwilling to have a 2nd shot of any COVID-19 vaccine".

In BC, you don't need to use the same vaccine for each shot to be considered fully vaccinated. This person is expected to switch to a different COVID-19 vaccine for her second shot.

In the article if you look at the Twitter post shown, it shows a "Valid contraindications and deferrals to COVID-19 vaccination" which states the following:

"The following are NOT contraindications to COVID-19 vaccination: History of an anaphylactic reaction to a previous dose of mRNA or adenovirus vector vaccine. Such individuals may receive their 2nd dose using vaccine of the different type. History of an anaphylactic reaction to any component of one type of vaccine. Such individuals may receive vaccine of the different type."

Teslazar··on Facebook has sold 4M Quest 2 headsets in the US, recall docs reveal
There were 3.3 billion phone subscribers in 2007 (source: https://www.statista.com/statistics/270850/number-of-mobile-...).

It's likely that most of those 4 million users have never had a VR headset before.

Teslazar··on Quake's 3-D Engine: The Big Picture by Michael Abrash (2000)
The articles are from 1996 - 1997.

According to the appendix (1), this content was posted to Blues News in 2000.

First article: Quake's Game Engine: The Big Picture - Dr. Dobbs Sourcebook, Sprint 1997, #279, pp. 58-60. Last article: Inside Quake: Visible-Surface Determination - Dr. Dobb's Sourcebook, Jan/Feb 1996, #255, pp. 41-45.

Teslazar··on [dead]
The article says "Intel and AMD license the CISC, so they’re the only ones making x86 chips". The "so" in this sentence doesn't seem to make sense since if they're licensing it then presumably others are making them. Also, AMD and Intel aren't the only ones making x86 chips since both VIA and Zhaoxin are also making them (and possibly others that I'm not aware of).
Teslazar··on Show HN: Should you buy or rent? – a Probabilistic Model
Rent sometimes includes utilities (e.g., hydro, internet, etc.) which can make a significant difference in the outcome but isn't included in the tool.
Teslazar··on Ask HN: Which great products didn't succeed?
I know it's not the same, but using the "related" feature in Google can be very effective. example: "related:news.ycombinator.com"
Teslazar··on Show HN: A tool to upload/download files from command line
I usually recommend https://file.pizza to non-tech people who want to send large files, as it is a very easy-to-use solution. The sender adds the file and then sends the file link to the recipient who simply loads it in their browser to download the file.

Files are sent peer to peer and are encrypted. The main downside is that the sender has to keep the browser tab open until the recipient receives the file.
