TerrifiedMouse··on Epic vs. Google: Google Loses
> However, consumers have the right to go to a different supermarket, without selling their house.

Consumers bought this house with their eyes wide open knowing that they can only access one supermarket.

TerrifiedMouse··on Epic vs. Google: Google Loses
> If the result of this case is "you can have a monopoly as long as your device and ecosystem are 100% locked down", that's terrible!

Monopolies aren’t illegal. Only the abuse of a monopoly position to advance your interest in other markets is illegal.

E.g. It’s not illegal to be the only seller of gasoline in the country. It is illegal though to bundle laundry powder with gasoline sales to corner the laundry powder market.

I get the feeling that LLMs will tell you they don’t know if “I don’t know” is one of the responses in their training data set. If they actually don’t know, i.e. no trained responses, that’s when they start hallucinating.
TerrifiedMouse··on Beeper Mini is back
I believe MS didn’t get nail on integrating IE into Windows - at least in the US - they got nailed on threatening to increase Windows prices for OEMs (which will ruin them in the competitive OEM market) that bundled Netscape, i.e. abusing their Windows monopoly to harm a competitor.

WhatsApp, Signal, Facebook Messenger are all free to download on iOS - heck it’s offered for download at Apple’s expense; since it’s from their App Store servers.

TerrifiedMouse··on Beeper Mini is back
This whole green bubble equal shame thing is 100% on people.

The reason there are 2 different colors is so people can tell when they are using SMS because SMS are capped / cost money in most of the world - while iMessage messages are unlimited and free.

TerrifiedMouse··on Programming Bottom-Up (1993)
> There are a number of reasons that bottom up programming in the style PG seems to be advocating for is not popular in industry.

I think another reason is that it’s just more work for another programmer to grok a bottom-up written program written with its own DSL then a program that’s bent to fit the existing (more rigid) language since they already know the existing language.

TerrifiedMouse··on Firefox Keeps Getting Faster
I haven’t had it hang yet but it does slow down and become laggy after a week or so for me.

You can use “Open previous Windows and tabs” to keep your tabs between restarts. It only works on the last window you have closed though.

TerrifiedMouse··on Apple cuts off Beeper Mini's access
I doubt manufacturing gets a percentage cut - doubt they want such a cut. Manufacturing likely charges by how much you ask them to produce. They will quote you a price for your order and maybe include a discount for large volumes.
TerrifiedMouse··on Apple cuts off Beeper Mini's access
> But 30% for using a distribution service is just absurd.

It’s the market rate. Almost all retail stores online and offline charge 30%.

TerrifiedMouse··on The industries AI is disrupting are not lucrative
I don’t believe that’s a law of nature - honestly it doesn’t even make sense. Disrupters disrupt what they can, what yields them the most profit.

Don’t people just bulk qualify the dialogue, e.g. “I don’t remember the exact words. Tom said … then Dick replied … something like that”.

Often we don’t quote people and instead provide a high level description of what they said, e.g. “Harry described the problems with his car.”, where detail is omitted.

> In the end the quality of the information it will get back to you is no better than the quality of a thorough google search.. it will just get you a more concise and well-formatted answer faster.

I would say it’s worse than Google search. Google tells you when it can’t find what you are looking for. LLMs “guess” a bullshit answer.

> Without the ability to confabulate, he would have been unable to tell his story.

You can tell a story without making up fiction. Just say you don’t know when you don’t know.

Inaccurate information is worse than no information.

TerrifiedMouse··on Bungie Devs Atmosphere 'Soul-Crushing' Amid Layoffs, Cuts, Fear of Sony Takeover
I heard the opposite. They care more about the studio’s live service expertise than the Destiny IP.
TerrifiedMouse··on Gemini AI
One problem I see with ChatGPT replacing search is, who is going to fund the content creators that generate the training data?
TerrifiedMouse··on Norway Joins Denmark in Swedish Tesla Strike/Blockade
The guy seems to be a textbook case of narcissistic personality disorder.

TerrifiedMouse··on Gemini AI
Bard will run a fine tuned Pro version of the Gemini model based on other comments.
TerrifiedMouse··on Gemini AI
Well, the a fine tuned version of the Pro model now powers Bard - which is free; so it’s probably quite cheap (to Google at least).
TerrifiedMouse··on How does Shazam work? (2022)
> I'm surprised even Shazam still makes commercial sense.

Isn’t Shazam owned by Apple now? It doesn’t need to make “financial sense” if it’s a service Apple runs.

TerrifiedMouse··on How does Shazam work? (2022)
Shazam is used to identify the artist and name of songs. I don’t want it guessing when precise information is available.
TerrifiedMouse··on US gov fires a warning shot at Nvidia
The US government has been pretty clear why they are doing this and the purpose of the “chip war”.

Nvidia and other businesses have been handed an olive branch but allowing them to sell things the US government considers inconsequential to China to make a few bucks. If Nvidia decides to abuse this privilege, the olive branch might just get taken back.

TerrifiedMouse··on US gov fires a warning shot at Nvidia
The “spirit” is don’t help China develop AI / advance their military capabilities.
TerrifiedMouse··on US gov fires a warning shot at Nvidia
> what does stop them to do the same for the information in X, FB, YT, and any other trove of information?

Nothing. I believe all governments in theory have the power to do that in one way or another. Governments write and enforce the laws of their country.

TerrifiedMouse··on US gov fires a warning shot at Nvidia
Worst case, the US government declares Nvidia a threat to national security, arrest its executives, and nationalize the whole company.
TerrifiedMouse··on US gov fires a warning shot at Nvidia
Nvidia is fabless the last time I checked and doesn’t own any fabrication equipment.
TerrifiedMouse··on US gov fires a warning shot at Nvidia
I see it as a case of Nvidia obeying the letter of the law but not the spirit - hence these cat and mouse games with the US government; where they expend extra effort to work around the rules just so they can make money from China.
TerrifiedMouse··on Toyota plans $4.7B sale of Denso stake as EV pivot looms
This is mainly to raise capital - according to the article Toyota will still be the largest shareholder after unwinding some of its holdings.
TerrifiedMouse··on YouTuber sentenced to 6 months in prison for obstructing probe into plane crash
It does close those doors though.
TerrifiedMouse··on YouTuber sentenced to 6 months in prison for obstructing probe into plane crash
Guess some people like to play the odds. Rather than take 50% damage, they choose to gamble between 0% damage (cover up successful) and 100% damage (cover up failed and isn’t survivable) - they are equivalent in terms of expected value.
TerrifiedMouse··on Calling 'fake' on the iPhone computational photography glitch
> I too feel this photograph was stage managed somehow

The example does feel “too clean”.

Has anyone at all been able to reproduce something similar?
