Right of publicity. Profiting of their image without their permission will get you sued. Even if you use an impersonator. If there is a chance the public will connect it with them, you are probably screwed.

TerrifiedMouse··on US developers can offer non-app store purchasing, Apple still collect commission
I feel the App Store is one thing differentiating Apple from Android phone manufacturers.

Money from the App Store gets reinvested in the entire iPhone supply chain. Whereas in the case of Android, App Store money goes to Google only.

It also encourages Apple to support their phones long term as its preferred that you stay on your aging iPhone and keep spending at the App Store then risking you leaving the Apple ecosystem because Apple allows their older phones to become obsolete. Android manufacturers on the other hand have every incentive to obsolete your phone ASAP because you buying a new phone is the only way they make money.

TerrifiedMouse··on AI to hit 40% of jobs and worsen inequality, IMF says
If you resort to violence so will they to protect their property.

If AGI becomes a thing, without political intervention, a lot of people will effectively be left out of the economy.

TerrifiedMouse··on Pixar to undergo 20% layoffs in 2024
There are quite a few numbers on the breakeven point but a quick google says it’s usually 2.5x-3x the budget - due to marketing cost and distribution fees.
TerrifiedMouse··on Pixar to undergo 20% layoffs in 2024
A quick google says the general consensus is you need 2.5x the budget of the movie to breakeven.
TerrifiedMouse··on Pixar to undergo 20% layoffs in 2024
> money isn’t cheap anymore

I know nothing about economics but I wonder if it’s time to ease up on the interest rates. Inflation might not be due to too much money in the system but rather supply simply drying up as China economy circles the drain. Maybe it’s a good idea to let money be cheap again so people could quickly set up alternative non-China suppliers to relieve the supply pressure. But then again I know anything about economics so add salt as required.

TerrifiedMouse··on Google Cuts Jobs in Engineering and Other Divisions
> This line of thought leads people to naturally adopt the exact same sort optimization (exploitation) strategies businesses (your employer) does with the same justifications they use.

But that’s exactly the kind of relationship it is. Instead of maintaining some fantasy, you should call a duck, a duck.

TerrifiedMouse··on X Bans and Then Unbans Journalists and Podcasters in Latest Free Speech Massacre
I think he can’t STFU. He needs constant public validation and praise. Frankly, I think he never will. 20 years from now, if he is still alive and wealthy, we will still be hearing from him - long after his peers have gone into quiet retirements.
TerrifiedMouse··on Scotia, California is owned by a New York investment firm

TerrifiedMouse··on SpaceX Illegally Fired Workers Critical of Musk, Federal Agency Says
I would hardly consider this as “take those disagreements public”. It’s not like they talked to the press. This letter was circulated internally using internal employee communications channels. Ironically, we would never have heard of it if they didn’t fire these employees in retaliation resulting in this lawsuit.
TerrifiedMouse··on Nvidia AI Lead: We are ~3 years from the ChatGPT moment for physical AI agents
> Most physical world thiigs have immediate feedback of incorrectness.

We might not want it to enter such circumstances where there is such feedback - e.g. car has run over a child. We generally aren’t interested in what the AI does in response to such feedback as such feedback should never ever occur.

TerrifiedMouse··on Maersk ship hit by missile in the Red Sea
> And now the Houthi rebels have become battle-hardened guerillas and insurgents, capable of projecting force into the vital shipping lanes of the Red Sea.

Their ability to attack the red sea has nothing to do with being "battle-hardened". They can only do so because Iran decides to supply them with missiles.

TerrifiedMouse··on Japan to crack down on Apple and Google app store monopolies
I made the jump from Android fairly early on when I realized that phones are terrible general purpose computers and that I mostly just use it as a phone - i.e. use almost exclusively the restricted subset of features that’s typical of smartphones. I lose nothing moving to the iPhone and gain a better UX (no crap installed by carriers or anyone else for the matter) and get better post sales care (long term updates and quick security patches).

China rhetoric is very concerning. As the old saying goes, when people tell you who they are, believe them.
TerrifiedMouse··on Study: TikTok Global Platform Anomalies Align with CCP Geostrategic Objectives [pdf]
I think it’s preferred that the “competition” aren’t the country’s geopolitical rivals who would love to see the country weaken if not destroyed.
TerrifiedMouse··on Intel's CEO says Moore's Law is slowing to a three-year cadence but not dead yet

None of them do any fabrication which is what’s Moore’s Law applies to.

TerrifiedMouse··on Intel plans spinoff of FPGA unit
> Yes and even within that they are risk averse, no need to look beyond 10nm and their reluctance to EUV.

Actually from what I heard, their failures with their Intel 7 was partly due to trying too many unproven technologies - i.e. they pulled a Zumwalt. With their current Intel 4 & 3 I heard they were more conservative.

TerrifiedMouse··on Intel plans spinoff of FPGA unit
The billions Biden threw their way isn’t really that much when their fabs cost billions to build. Don’t think the grants cover the full cost of their new fabs - it was 50 billion total right divided among all the corporations including TSMC, IIRC.
TerrifiedMouse··on The Age Gappers: They say they're happy. Why is it so hard to believe them?
I still don’t get it. The fact that women prefer men of similar age or older … there are plenty of young men of similar age for young women, in fact it’s nearly one to one, then you add in the older men. For young women their suitors outnumber them.

Seems to be young men and elder women will always have a shortage of suitors no matter the population ratio between young and older people. It’s just that the shortage worsens for young men if the ratio leans towards more older people and the shortage worsens for older women when the ratio leans towards more young people.

TerrifiedMouse··on The Age Gappers: They say they're happy. Why is it so hard to believe them?
> The reverse problem of fertility vs sex difference in age preference exists in some African countries, where the fertility rate is very high. Which means there are more young people, which means some fraction of young women will not find a partner.

Maybe I’m dumb. I don’t understand how young women will have trouble finding a partner.

TerrifiedMouse··on Interview: Epic CEO Tim Sweeney after Google antitrust win
Apple managed to screw up Facebook’s data gathering. So they are definitely hurt Epic’s ability to do so too.

Epic having its own store front means they can use dark patterns there too.

Apple is limiting the worst of these companies’ behaviors.

They are as unethical as they come.

TerrifiedMouse··on Interview: Epic CEO Tim Sweeney after Google antitrust win
Good will? The reason they want Apple and Google out of the way isn’t just because of the 30% fee but also because it prevents Epic from collecting information and utilizing dark patterns to gouge children.

TerrifiedMouse··on AI’s big rift is like a religious schism
> But soon got algorithmic feeds which effectively filter out antisocial content.

You mean (we) got algorithmic feeds which feed us antisocial content for the sake of profit because such content drives the most engagement thus generating the most ad revenue.

TerrifiedMouse··on Epic vs. Google: Google Loses
> Why should my choice of hardware or OS dictate the apps I'm allowed to install?

Do you own an iPhone? I suspect that the vast majority of people complaining about Apple's "lock down" are people who don't even use an iPhone.

If you do own an iPhone ... why the heck did you buy one knowing its limitations. It's like buying a pink shirt when you hate pink, despite the availability of shirts of other colors, then going to the manufacturer to complain about the color.

TerrifiedMouse··on Epic vs. Google: Google Loses
> So for example, if you had a dominant market position for a particular category of phone operating systems, and you wanted to advance your interest in the market for app distribution...

Except the App Store was added to the iPhone before it reached its current level of ubiquity.

I believe Apple views the App Store as a feature of the iPhone that contributes to its value - the huge variety of apps available definitely contributed to the iPhone’s success; see the Windows phone for an example of a phone without a good App Store.
