Temporary_31337··on Disney seeks dismissal of wrongful death lawsuit citing waiver in Disney+ terms
A good portion of HN already knows. Disney+ is struggling as it is. Giving people one more reason not to sign up is not good marketing. Losing 0.1% market share in case of Disney is probably worth more than the whole lawsuit.
Temporary_31337··on Ask HN: Should we bring software dev in-house?
If you’re happy working remotely then you potentially have a much larger pool of talent to choose from.
Temporary_31337··on A primer on the current state of longevity research
Statistically it will not be a very useful scientific experiment - too many variables, too small sample size. Plus he will die a lot sooner from all the pills he is taking.

Inflammation is still a symptom- body reacting to something that it doesn’t like so it’s like saying that almost every smoke goes back to fire. Not wrong, not horribly useful.
Temporary_31337··on Dispatches from the farm upstate
I agree with both of you, of course, but this means that in order to just break even you have to do something like tourism or similar just to cover your own costs of taxes and plowing.
Temporary_31337··on 'Charger hogs' are ruining the electric vehicle experience
Re Tesla superchargers - because Tesla is currently valued as a tech company at multiples of PE. Chargers are utility companies and command very low margins high upfront costs and high maintenance so are usually priced pretty low. In many instances utility companies that are private don’t even make profits and have to be rescued by the government and taxpayers in the long run so yeah that’s why.
Temporary_31337··on Dispatches from the farm upstate
Interesting that this is a place that is 10 minutes drive from a nearby town and yet requires all year round maintenance. At least in Alaska the government gives citizens tax incentives for simply living there but looks like owning a rural property in US nowadays is very far from homesteading of yesteryear- you have to pay taxes and pretty much need some additional source of income just to get by.

All this burn and recruiters and bots still match on keywords in CV.
Temporary_31337··on DJI announces an electric mountain bike drive system
It’s hardly state of the art at this point. There’s lighter and more efficient drivetrains from Shimano bosch and many others.
Temporary_31337··on The economics of the Birkin handbag
A much better strategy is to just buy an index for the equivalent amount every time you decide on a disposable / luxury purchase. That way there is no guilt about being able to afford it and generally you hit your savings rate etc.
Temporary_31337··on Predictably Bad Investments: Evidence from Venture Capitalists
SpaceX has not outperformed anything for the later round investors yet. It may have a high hypothetical valuation in an illiquid market but it doesn’t mean you can sell your shares.
Temporary_31337··on Industrial Design Student Work: "How Long Should Objects Last?"
Once you start optimising for one parameter the other ones suffer. Over 500g for an umbrella is not acceptable in the space age.

I bought a cheap Chinese umbrella for $10. It almost never gets used. It probably is not designed to be repairable or durable yet I have had it for over ten years so the environmental impact is minimal. It is also very lightweight so I have it with me often.

Temporary_31337··on Show HN: AI climbing coach – visualize how to climb any route based on your body
I feel like I’m the right audience for this - a not very good climber with unusual distribution of limbs. But I’m not interested - part of the fun in climbing is on sight climbs and solving problems yourself.
Temporary_31337··on Ask HN: How to do simple heartbeat monitoring?
You want odd numbers (n+1) so you can have a quorum in case of network partition.
Temporary_31337··on Tribler: An attack-resilient micro-economy for media
There is some relationship but some scarcity is natural- where is trust in that?
Temporary_31337··on Leaving Substack
Something not really covered in the article is the SEO boost from using substack and an easier conversion if you ever decide to monetise your blog directly.

Temporary_31337··on First impressions of early-access GPT-4 fine-tuning
It’s interesting watching GenAI from a distance.

The various iterations on GPT style architecture make me think that this is it for now, until some other breakthroughs there will only be optimisations but in its current form GenAI is not the sentient Singularity that some are praising. The models, even with optimisation are very GPU/ power hungry so it is inevitable to compare to blockchain and how it basically got us nowhere - a solution looking for a problem.

Temporary_31337··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
Hi Peter,

From a legal standpoint, would you say it’s easy for someone to provide remote work services directly to a US startup? How would you go about it- set up an LLC in Delaware or provide the service via the country of origin and send international invoices?

Temporary_31337··on A Nigerian woman reviewed some tomato puree online. Now she faces jail
Streisand effect. The original review said the tomato sauce was full of sugar. Which it probably is. Indefensible and now the whole world knows about that.
