TeeMassive··on Modern email can be built from borrowed parts
Asymmetric signature generation has been a solved problem for more than a quarter of a century. So are distributed hash tables. I can't believe email hasn't been replaced. My take on it is to follow the money. Microsoft, Google and Yahoo have a vested interest in being the only big identity providers along probably with some 3 letters agencies.
TeeMassive··on Judge a book by its first pages
Seriously.

Why would "A blue Ford just parked in front of the door. Jim still hasn't truly fully woken up but he was already making breakfast..." incite me to read the book?

Compare that to The Poppy War which I just discovered:

"Take your clothes off. Rin blinked. What? Cheating prevention protocol."

TeeMassive··on I hate GitHub Actions with passion
Pathological organizations for some reason all prefer to never version the CI in the same repository it is testing.
TeeMassive··on Perfectly Replicating Coca Cola [video]
Canadian here. I thought this was common knowledge.
TeeMassive··on Scott Adams has died
> How or why Scott Adams went completely of the rails

Why? People all say that but it is never stated how or what he said.

TeeMassive··on Archimedes – A Python toolkit for hardware engineering
I was under that impression too, like an alternative to PYNQ https://github.com/Xilinx/PYNQ
TeeMassive··on What happened with the CIA and The Paris Review?
I don't think dividing opinions into conspiracist and not conspiracist is not a good epistemological basis. Opinions can be judged on the facts they are based on facts and how they are based on logical arguments or not regardless of their conspiracistness.
TeeMassive··on What happened with the CIA and The Paris Review?
I like to read the propaganda / state funded media of most major nation states of the world: Al Jazeera, TRT, CGTN, RT, BBC, CBC, PBS, etc.

Western "propaganda" is the most insidious and frankly insane. At least with other state media it is clear they are being advocates and their own population don't believe it and won't defend it in private conversations. But in the West we have a way to make people want to believe, it is very uncanny. If I see another "let's go to war for Afghan/Iranian/Syrian women" documentary from the CBC I will lose my mind.

TeeMassive··on Operating Margins
It's sad to see that the highest operating margins are not industries that produce actual value but financialized slop makers.
TeeMassive··on I took all my projects off the cloud, saving thousands of dollars
How many clients do you have?
TeeMassive··on Uv is the best thing to happen to the Python ecosystem in a decade
This is a PEP and not specific to uv: https://peps.python.org/pep-0723/
TeeMassive··on Roc Camera
Indeed it can't authenticate photons. Security isn't about making things perfectly safe, but to make it harder for the bad guys.
TeeMassive··on Who benefits from the MAHA anti-science push?
Then why is it illegal to make raw milk cheese?
TeeMassive··on Who benefits from the MAHA anti-science push?
This is a false equivalence. And if the milk and the cow is tested for pathogens, what is the problem?
TeeMassive··on Willow quantum chip demonstrates verifiable quantum advantage on hardware
The last time I heard a similar news from Google, it turned out they were solving a quantum phenomenon using a quantum phenomenon. It seems to be the same pattern here. Not to say it's not progress, but kind of feels like overhyped.
TeeMassive··on Who benefits from the MAHA anti-science push?
I never understood the fear of raw milk. The best cheese are made with raw milk. I don't understand how it can't be safe when both the cow and the milk are tested for disease and bad germs.
TeeMassive··on You can't build tcc from Nixpkgs if you are in the UK
You should focus on the p2p part of code and object distribution. While nix is not perfect, people are not going to learn and adopt yet another package manager.

A distributed git object cache is what is really needed at the moment.

TeeMassive··on You can't build tcc from Nixpkgs if you are in the UK
Censorship causes self-censorship born out of caution.

Would you pay their legal fees if they are sued? It's easy to say when you don't have your future on the line.

TeeMassive··on NSPM-7 labels common beliefs as terrorism 'indicators'
My point exactly. Just because one side displays "empathy" is irrelevant to the outcome.
TeeMassive··on NSPM-7 labels common beliefs as terrorism 'indicators'
Lots of bad things were done in the name of empathy. Colonialism is an example. Those "uncivilized" people "needed" European civilization and the effort was encourage as charity by the Church.

TeeMassive··on NSPM-7 labels common beliefs as terrorism 'indicators'
Bombings and other political violence are already illegal.

Are we going to classify every single variations of the political beliefs of every domestic terrorists even if they are shared by millions of others law abiding citizens?

TeeMassive··on NSPM-7 labels common beliefs as terrorism 'indicators'
This is what I told my progressives friends 4 years ago that Biden's push to extend the definitions of signs of domestic terrorism to "radical traditional Christians groups" was going to backfire and be reciprocated in probably worse and more morally wrong policies to them.
TeeMassive··on YouTube says it'll bring back creators banned for Covid and election content
1. By accepting unique protections and benefice of and from the state, they are no longer entirely private. 2. See comments below. It doesn't say what you think it says. 3. Google has a quasi monopoly (it doesn't require having full control) and abused it with YouTube with its search result. While it's true that it's not YT entirely by itself.
TeeMassive··on YouTube says it'll bring back creators banned for Covid and election content
What's your alternative? The opposite is state dictated censorship and secrecy and those have turned very wrong every single time.
TeeMassive··on YouTube says it'll bring back creators banned for Covid and election content
> It's their private property, they can ban or promote any ideas that they want to. You're free to not use their property if you disagree with that.

1) They are public corporations and are legal creation of the state and benefit from certain protections of the state. They also have privileged access to some public infrastructures that other private companies do not have.

2) By acting on the behest of the government they were agent of the government for free speech and censorship purposes

3) Being monopolies in their respective markets, this means they must respect certain obligations the same way public utilities have.

TeeMassive··on YouTube says it'll bring back creators banned for Covid and election content
Have you heard about Tik Tok? And you think governments' intelligence agencies are not inserting their agents in key positions at bit tech companies?
TeeMassive··on YouTube says it'll bring back creators banned for Covid and election content
> This seems like good banning to me. Anti-vaxxer propaganda isn't forbidden thoughts. It's bad science and lies and killing people.

Any subject important enough in any public forum is potentially going to have wrong opinions that are going to cause harm. While some people could be wrong, and could cause harm, the state itself being wrong is far more dangerous, especially with no dissident voices there to correct its course.

Edit: I see you're getting downvoted for simply stating your honest opinion. But as a matter of principle I'm going to upvote you.

TeeMassive··on DSM Disorders Disappear in Statistical Clustering of Psychiatric Symptoms (2024)
Every time I read a part of the DSM-V, as a layman, I'm flabbergasted how vague and redundant and arbitrary symptoms and diagnostics are made (e.g. "if 6 out of 10 then..."). It just seems that on its face, while psychiatry has improved and began doing more good than harm since deinstitutionalization, it still lacks the rigor found in other applied scientific fields such as cardiology and oncology for example.

This study is a very good step in the right direction. The other direction is more quantitative methods such as measuring the brain waves response to a retinal laser flash to detect mental disorders (look it up, it's real)

TeeMassive··on Protobuffers Are Wrong (2018)
I get the author's points, and they all are valid, but I don't understand why people would use generated code and its types through their entire project.

This is just asking for trouble when the API will inevitably break as all APIs will do eventually. In our projects I mandated and pushed really hard that we create intermediary data classes that correspond one to one to the protobufs (at first).

I got a lot of angry faces and reactions in PR due to the seemingly useless boiler plate code required but it saved our butts so many times when the API changed just before a release that it became the de facto standard.

Also, protobufs and GRPCs are a de facto standards. Are there better alternatives? Yes. Should you use those? Most likely not because the point of serialization frameworks is to be used by many people in various tech stacks.
