TearsInTheRain··on Changes at Basecamp
My company has mandated that 40% of our recruiting contacts for engineers are women. We have spent weeks talking about bias in our interview process and despite having no metrics showing bias is a problem we have made changes to combat it (i.e. no video on the call) that have led to worse experiences for our candidates. Suffice to say we have had a lot of trouble hiring engineers.

> Why wouldn't you want to bring them up at work?

Imho companies that try to tackle the woke political issues are going to end up worse off and never make those few employees that keep bringing them up happy.

TearsInTheRain··on Just Be Rich
There are people willing to take those jobs. You would be taking a job away from a willing worker and doing what? Tell them to take welfare? Not everyone in the workforce is a sole breadwinner for their family. Regulating those jobs makes all of those workers worse off and is an economic loss to the system.
TearsInTheRain··on $7.5B In Stolen Bitcoin from 2016 Bitfinex Hack has just been moved
Who gets to determine which addresses are "poisoned"? China? The US? I have to imagine the ideologues in the bitcoin community will fight back against that. Also, not being censorable is a big part of bitcoin's value prop so this type of regulation would likely crash the price as well.
TearsInTheRain··on Just Be Rich
> A full-time worker deserves to be paid enough to live, period.

Even if "enough to live" is greater than the value they generate?

TearsInTheRain··on China is betting that the West is in irreversible decline
The US is more than just its government. It is easy to argue that we are in a cultural decline as well. We all have agency in that regard.
TearsInTheRain··on CEO of a top Bitcoin exchange warns: crackdown on cryptocurrencies may be coming
Exactly. I think all of the people that say "Crypto doesnt solve any problems" just live in countries with strong institutions which dont have the problems crypto solves. Even in those places though crypto is useful as a hedge against institutional failure.
TearsInTheRain··on Yes, experts will lie to you sometimes
The problem is that distancing has huge economic downsides whereas masks have none.
TearsInTheRain··on Tesla cars can be bought in Bitcoin
Do you keep enough money to buy a tesla lying around in straight cash?
TearsInTheRain··on Why the Wuhan lab leak theory shouldn't be dismissed
Their main argument in the podcast is that the scientist in the lab says that they were not working on this virus and "even with the central control of china there is no way they could keep that secret". That argument is not going to hold a lot of water with people
TearsInTheRain··on NYC Spent Half a Million Dollars per Inmate in 2020, Report Says
Perhaps disburse government spending to various accounts on a blockchain via a stable dollar backed coin. All spending is now immutable and public
TearsInTheRain··on Ask HN: What are some “10x” software product innovations you have experienced?
Although i started a while JQuery was dominant, I have to imagine JQuery was a 10x improvement over vanilla dom manipulation and dealing with cross browser issues.
TearsInTheRain··on NFTs Are a Dangerous Trap
I like the idea of building in a percent cut taken out of the resell price and given to the venue/artist. It taxes scalpers and allows artists to benefit from secondary markets if they mispriced their initial offering. Its also easy to do in a contract
TearsInTheRain··on Four Basic Truths of Macroeconomics
> Inflation only matters from the time you receive your paycheck to the time you invest it in productive assets or buy the necessities of life.

This statement just reeks of entitlement and elitism. This is not how most americans live their lives. Stock ownership is highly correlated with income and education. Inflation is a regressive tax on the financially illiterate.

TearsInTheRain··on America's 1% Has Taken $50T From the Bottom 90%
They affect the inflation rate and inflation should be thought of as a tax. And its a tax that primarily affects middle class people that keep their wealth in cash rather than assets.

They also implicitly affect asset prices which is probably one of the primary causes of wealth inequality.

TearsInTheRain··on Evidence that the FBI can hack into private Signal messages on a locked iPhone
If you raise Signal's profile then I think you can expect some half-informed tech journalists to start writing about it without fully understanding it.
TearsInTheRain··on IBM has cut its blockchain team down to almost nothing – sources
Blockchain solves trust censorship and control. We dont see problems in the US that need those solutions because our institutions are trustworthy and strong. However we literally just had a month where the president was deplatformed, a social network was deplatformed, Robinhood blocked participation in the markets and as always the Fed / Treasury are printing massive amounts of money. I think Americans are going to start valuing trustless systems a lot more after all of that.
TearsInTheRain··on Statement of SEC Regarding Recent Market Volatility
I think maybe lay people are using hedge funds as a catch all for market participants in securities / equities. Everyone was buying CDOs, banks, pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, hedge funds etc
TearsInTheRain··on Statement of SEC Regarding Recent Market Volatility
You want to blame the regulators but imho any system that relies solely regulators is going to be fragile. The regulators always have a chance of being captured by the industry or just plain incompetent.

We have a culture of people not feeling the negative repercussions of "bad actions". Buying multiple homes was irresponsible, mortgage brokers immediately selling every loan is a moral hazard and Wall street levering up on CDOs were all problems. All of them deserve blame BUT the hedge funds and mortgage brokers got bailouts and the home buyers didnt. That smells like BS to me and anger at the people that allowed that to happen, hedge funds and bankers included, looks justified to me

TearsInTheRain··on Made in the USA: Socialism for the Rich. Capitalism for the Rest
Didn't Trump suspend H1-B visas? Does Biden have a plan for the program?
TearsInTheRain··on Made in the USA: Socialism for the Rich. Capitalism for the Rest
I disagree that they are distinct issues. Ultra low interest rates inflating their market cap gives them access to capital and in turn power to lobby for favorable tax policies, trade policies etc.
TearsInTheRain··on Google Blocking Web Privacy Proposals at W3C (2019)
yikes, not a fan of that argument as a matter of principle.
TearsInTheRain··on Facebook Incubated the Insurrection
I dont think they were trying to pacify dems. I think they have wanted to do this for a long time but couldnt with Trump in power. This was a cathartic release for San Francisco bay liberals
TearsInTheRain··on An amendment to the Constitution of the USA to abolish the electoral college
> The productive parts of the country need to unlearn helplessness

Thats so reductive. the "productive" parts of the country are completely dependent on the "unproductive" ones for anything that isnt software or finance.
TearsInTheRain··on FBI warns of plans for nationwide armed protests next week
What are the odds the feds found a 4chan et al poster spoofing an armed protest and are just so on edge they are taking it seriously? Then some unnamed low level official leaks it to his press buddies and all of a sudden our country is in crisis again.
TearsInTheRain··on FBI warns 'armed protests' being planned at all 50 state capitols
No armed protest is going to be planned in "church groups" or "softball teams". Social networks have been significant players for 15 years now and the internet longer. If there are "armed protests" being planned they will likely be happening on the internet on various message boards on fringe sites.
TearsInTheRain··on YouTube bans Steve Bannon's podcast channel
Of course your causes are absolutely required and moral and just but those guys over there with their concerns, those we dont need to protect and claiming they are "violent mobs" is totally justified...
TearsInTheRain··on Stripe bans Trump campaign
> Convincing people who don't understand very well their rights, democracy, civics, and etc that their RIGHTS were being infringed; by others exercising their rights.

I dont think we need to infantilize Trump supporters. They are capable of evaluating claims made by the GOP.

TearsInTheRain··on Tether price manipulation
Do they even allow exchanging tether for USD? I dont think they do
TearsInTheRain··on Tether price manipulation
And we seem to be creating more and more dissidents everyday
TearsInTheRain··on Tether price manipulation
Not having enough money to transact would definitely have suppressed our economic growth, but then again maybe we would have gotten really good at mining for gold to make up for it
