Tanath··on Astrophysicists Puzzle over Webb’s New Universe
Hypotheses are made for a reason though. Science is still about finding what's true, and ruling out what's not is part of the process/method for doing so. Sometimes all the alternatives to the truth are ruled out and we know the truth. Scientific revolutions happen sometimes, but they still need to explain everything the old theories explained. The newer theories may still be wrong, but in different and hopefully fewer ways. It's important to keep the scope of what's been demonstrated/tested in mind to not be misled about what truths have been established. Newton's physics is still largely true within the scope of everyday experience, for example.
Tanath··on Cloudflare Global Network experiencing issues
DDoS prevention may be essential, but not CloudFlare.
Tanath··on DOJ: Google must sell Chrome, Android could be next
Smaller is less efficient. They don't get to benefit from economy of scale as much as larger.
Tanath··on Brave Leo now uses Mixtral 8x7B as default
It's foolish to trust Brave. https://www.spacebar.news/p/stop-using-brave-browser
Tanath··on BugMeNot Is Gone?
I was hoping someone would know why it was blocked as malware, thinking it might be compromised and that people should be warned. VT says it's safe though so it's likely a mistake. Not sure what you mean about traceability. You could check the github.
Tanath··on BugMeNot Is Gone?
Blocked in uBO by The Block List Project - Malware List.
Tanath··on Optimal Stopping
I don't think that would break it because you have a limited amount of time. You base it on 1/e of the number of people you expect to date not the number of potential options.
Tanath··on Out of the top fifty games on Steam, 70% work on Linux
Such bans are rare, and usually get reversed if it was only triggered due to Linux.
Tanath··on The Sovietization of the American Press
> several hundred thousands

Several thousand, coming from Trump's rally which only had about 20k total.

Tanath··on AI Teaches Itself Diplomacy
But you know that's the next step and it's going to happen.

Tanath··on Getting Started with Brave
If you want to avoid fingerprinting you should use tor-browser. And using a chromium-based browser over tor makes you more fingerprintable, not less.

Neither was omitting Putin's admission that he wanted Trump to win from the Whitehouse transcripts.
Tanath··on Five lines I put in a blank .vimrc
It's not a big deal. You can just hit K on any you're not sure about to see the help. Might need to set keywordprg=:help.
Tanath··on Self-host your fonts for better performance
Not nearly as good.
Tanath··on Self-host your fonts for better performance
Are you just clinging to the last dev version of uMatrix, or did you find an active fork or something?
Tanath··on Google plans to shut down Google Voice integration with classic Hangouts
I'm still sore about Reader too. Fortunately Inoreader is about as good.

I'm surprised thumbing things down isn't helping you - it was the thing that fixed YTM for me. I wasn't thumbing things down enough, now anything I don't want to hear again I thumb down, and I mostly listen to the personalized and discovery mixes. You might need to switch/reload stations for it to take effect. And IIRC the discovery mix only updates on Wed.

Tanath··on Brow.sh: a modern text-based browser
Felinks is an actively maintained fork.
Tanath··on Brow.sh: a modern text-based browser
Browsh does some js, and felinks is an actively maintained fork of elinks with some js support as well.
Tanath··on VPN by Google One
Snowden's revelation that the NSA was in Google's network had their engineers pissed, and they immediately changed their architecture to make it more secure, encrypting internal connections. That doesn't make me want to use them less. And Snowden was compromised by Russia even before he went there.
Tanath··on VPN by Google One
> What does the VPN log?

> In order to provide peace of mind for our users that their activity is private from the VPN operator and from potential attackers, VPN by Google One does not log user activity on the network or other information that could reveal personally identifiable information about them. The following data is NOT logged by the VPN for a given user:

● Network traffic, including DNS

● IP addresses of the devices connecting to the VPN

Tanath··on How to catch a spy that is using a numbers station – The KGB Experience
And I think that's the issue. It was a foreign lock they weren't familiar with so didn't have one to practice on. It was apparently easier to copy the key.
Tanath··on Trump offered to pardon Assange if he provided source for DNC emails – lawyer
> it is very likely that Russia was also behind the DNC hack.

Actually it's an established fact. They were being watched live on their computers and security cameras as they were doing the hacking.

Tanath··on Mozilla's Speech-to-Text Engine Is at Risk Following Layoffs
Seems unlikely. The layoffs happened before they got a new deal: https://www.theverge.com/2020/8/15/21370020/mozilla-google-f...

Now they can bring people back.

Tanath··on Malcolm Gladwell: How I Rediscovered Religion

Tanath··on Manjaro Linux treasurer resigns amid unjustified use of donation funds
> unjustified use of donation funds

There was no actual mishandling of funds, just [disagreement on procedure](https://forum.manjaro.org/t/change-of-treasurer-for-manjaro-...):

> To clarify, there has not been any fund misuse. There has been a disagreement about the process of how the funds are allocated, but no funds have been allocated during the conflict.

Tanath··on Why people put their Myers-Briggs personality types on their Tinder profiles
Same reasons they put their zodiac/astrological signs. About as scientific.
