TX0098812··on The potential Orwellian horror of central bank digital currencies
You don't fear their control because you have nothing to hide. Then one day you want to speak up against them, but you don't because they control your money. So you never cross them. But one day, they seek you out and order you to do something. You have to comply because they own you.

If you control your money, it's your money. If they control the money, it's their money -- you only have it as long as they let you.

The poster did not mention ideology or nationalism. Please don't pretend to misinterpret.
TX0098812··on Why the African genome project is so useful
First word of the article: RACISM.

I'm sure there are more things related to black/African people that can be discussed than racism. There is more than one subject out there.

TX0098812··on EU startup fund overwhelmed by high demand
Logic.
TX0098812··on Amazon is using algorithms with little human intervention to fire Flex workers
That may very well be the case. Companies tend to put all sorts of things into contracts that courts would never enforce. It pays because people believe the contract is valid and abide by it.
TX0098812··on Amazon is using algorithms with little human intervention to fire Flex workers
> A business relationship like employment is by mutual consent.

This is a childish fantasy.

TX0098812··on Amazon is using algorithms with little human intervention to fire Flex workers
> Aren't they contractors?

Question is, according to whom. For example, Uber got hit with a pretty big fine in Italy because in the view of the court, the people working for Uber should be viewed as employees.

TX0098812··on A rediscovered lost memoir about John Locke
The guardian is constantly negative. It's like their job is to attack and discredit people and institutions they don't like. Often based on insinuations or flimsy or no evidence.

More knowledge and less lobbying please.

TX0098812··on Why do recipe writers lie about how long it takes to caramelize onions? (2012)
Browning, unless we're talking about burning onions, is caramelisation. Just a small amount.
TX0098812··on Why do recipe writers lie about how long it takes to caramelize onions? (2012)
If we just want them to change color we can do that a whole lot faster than 10 minutes. But you wouldn't like the taste. :)
TX0098812··on Why do recipe writers lie about how long it takes to caramelize onions? (2012)
There is no such "proper" cookware. This isn't rocket science.

These reactions take a certain amount of time that you can't change a whole lot because you need to stay within certain parameters, like thickness and heat.

TX0098812··on Why do recipe writers lie about how long it takes to caramelize onions? (2012)
The "layer of deceit" is that they claim you can do something in a particular way within a certain time frame and that this is not actually possible. And cook books aren't written by editors.
TX0098812··on Why do recipe writers lie about how long it takes to caramelize onions? (2012)
1. I've seen lots of recipes that mention if describe caramelization and not one has mentioned baking soda so it's besides the point.

2. None of them will ever list baking soda because it will affect the taste in a horrible way.

TX0098812··on The blackout Palestinians are facing on social media
And similarly peace isn't possible while the wall is there. Although the reason it was built was because there wasn't peace. And so on about a thousand years back.

TX0098812··on Panasonic sells its $3.6B Tesla stake
Most companies struggle to build well understood products like apps and web sites. The leadership of most organizations is unable to organize the relevant work because they don't know anything about such products. If a company struggles to build an app, a product like an EV is a major undertaking.
TX0098812··on Panasonic sells its $3.6B Tesla stake
Afaik only some of them are from Panasonic.
TX0098812··on Panasonic sells its $3.6B Tesla stake
Can anyone explain how Tesla can be valued so high?

They're valued twice as high as Toyota at around 1/12 the profits of Toyota. P/E is almost 600 so they'd have to overtake Toyota's profits by a significant margin to justify their valuation.

So far this looks like pure hype.

However... they are way ahead in terms of technology in a number of areas and I guess they could also make money from things like their super charger network and batteries?

So maybe they're better positioned for the future / more diversified than Toyota and therefore have greater potential?

Can't say that I blame anyone. If it wasn't profitable there isn't much to do. Perhaps communication could have been better? Don't know.

TX0098812··on Half of UK university students think degree is poor value for money
1. More and more people are getting degrees, making them less of a differentiator.

2. Knowledge is more and more readily available and is not limited to degree holders.

3. Politics is infecting universities with propaganda.

4. Universities are coming up with useless degrees in order to attract students.

5. Universities focus too much on degrees and grades and not enough on knowledge.

TX0098812··on John McAfee found dead in Spanish jail after court approves extradition to US
Spanish prisons are apparently among the worst in Europe according to some documentary I saw. I wonder if there's a connection.
TX0098812··on What it's like to be cancelled
You missed the point. While the entire thread talk about how people can easily accuse others on the internet without evidence, someone posts a link containing accusations and we're supposed to automatically assume it's true.

But hey, now some guy on hacker news says his friend witnessed it...
