Systemic33··on Uber should be suspended in California and fined $7.3M, judge says
Considering the massive backlash Uber has received around the world, i'm quite impressed how they can keep the show going, and investors keep funding them.

Doesn't this seem like a lost cause for VC's?

Edit:

I get that the service they provide is hugely beneficial to the customers, but if that is only possible from breaking the law, then it's doomed to fail.

E.g. If an airline company provided extremely cheap flights, by having people who just received a license to fly be the captain, then you are asking for trouble, legal and illegal.

Truth be told, if Uber pivoted to instead of cutting out the taxi companies, instead delivered the app as a service for the taxi companies, then they could probably optimize their respective companies to be able to provide taxi services cheaper and with better service.

Systemic33··on Iran Nuclear Deal Reached
> with rampant antisemitism in Europe

Because Israel isn't escalating this at all with the palestine conflict...

Netanyahu is a warmongerer that keeps the conflict alive, because it serves his interests, in increasing antisemitism, resulting in jews feeling increasingly threatened, and starts to consider relocation to Israel, increasing support for Netanyahu.

- Class-best camera (Lumia 930)

- Coherent UI

- Useful "home" screen.

- Cheap

I usually describe it as the nice UI and design from Apple with the cost of an Android.

Very interesting read, I wonder if Twitter does it in a similar way.

Anyone who knows where to learn more about the system design they use, with the pre-processor, parser, scorer, and ranker?

How do these interact? What's the respective input and output?

Links to some similar system with more in-depth on this area would be appreciated.

The use of i,j,k, etc is a convention carried over from math to CS.

Edit: As are a vast majority of CS knowledge: set theory, calculus, matrix, and so on.

Systemic33··on What Makes the Expat Lifestyle So Addictive?
I lived 6 years in Stockholm, and despite being from Denmark, so the cultural differences aren't enormous, this article is definitely right on target. It's kind of like being part of an international community, and if it was a nation in its own right, it would be the most tolerant and friendly you could imagine. Because becoming an expat takes the kind of social courage you only find among such people.

Systemic33··on A trucker trying to hack the haulage industry [video]
We are still a long way from vehicles without human occupants. The most modern lorries by Mercedes-Benz are very autonoumous, but still need a driver to be with the lorry.

Since lorries rarely just go from marked up parking spot to parking spot, but at their destinations probably have to navigate unconventional layouts, etc, they will for the forseeable future include drivers.

But what I expect to see happen, is that the logistics will become more decentralized, since the driver can now spend more time on administration, and less on driving, essentially taking over the job of the company command central.

Systemic33··on What Happens When You Install the Top Download.com Apps
Wow, the co-found of ninite :D

I can't thank you enough! That program is _always_ the absolute first i download on every windows machine, period.

I think i've told all my friend about ninite by now, and everyone is super impressed.

Would you care to elaborate on how it works? do you download from each software homepage, or do you constantly have to download latests versions and then serve from your own server?

Any way you could make a free or cheap one-time pay, for a version that can use a private server to host, and then deliver programs to it this way.

Systemic33··on Stop Changing UIs for No Good Reason
As a Windows Phone user, this really resonates with me, because WP has actually been preserving the UI and basic principles it builds on, and only added features as users voiced needs for specific upgrades (like allowing transparent tiles with a photo behind the start screen (effectively a background, but in a non-traditional way.

With the exception of Windows 7 -> Windows 8, MS have also kept cosmetic updates to the system, fairly conservatively.

The authors critique of OSX is maybe the only thing i disagree with, since I haven't experienced any situation, where more than the cosmetic things changed, i.e. no UI elements changed really.

Well that definitely takes the 𝕡𝕣𝕚𝕫𝕖 for most noticeable Hacker News submission.

Suggestion (if you are author): There are a lot of chars that look like another char, often used on the web, so i think that there are more advanced versions to be made. I think i read that a lot of thai signs and cyrillic look like latin chars.

To be blunt, this iPad copying is very Nokia-unlike. I associate Nokia with high quality original designs, eg. Lumia devices. This isn't a real Nokia.

Systemic33··on Sweden has proof foreign submarine entered its waters
The same Sweden was basically sleeping when russian planes contested swedish aerospace, and danish F16's had to act on it, and show the russians the door out. Swedish military isn't exactly famous for being on the ready and deliver on threats.

It's so relaxed, to the point that its a running joke among neighbour nations.

Source: I'm from denmark, and lived in sweden for 6 years up until 3 years ago, and my father has lots of nordic military contacts.

Will be interesting if this will be similar to linux with the possibility of community driven repositories alongside official repo's. Or if it's more of an admintool to do windows updates/windows store installs.

Systemic33··on Why firms don't want you to be brilliant at your job
I think while this point of view is indeed very true for the large majority, larger companies combat this job hopping, by encouraging internal job switching; ie. going from one area of business to another, which is closer to getting a new job, than getting a promotion. This ensures that the company doesn't waste time in getting a ext. employee to get accustomed to the culture. But that's really the essence Human Capital Management (HCM). I am however not so sure, how widespread this practice is, maybe you guys know?
