Mobile engineers, iOS
Hi all. Kayak is a world leader in travel search and our iOS app is #1 in the App Store. Help us keep it that way by building out exciting new features and relentlessly polishing our existing ones. You should have iOS and network experience along with a deep desire to grow and perfect your skill sets. We have a very small team we are looking to grow, so talented juniors all the way to principal architects are welcome. We have a flat organization, give people tons of responsibility and autonomy, pay well, and enjoy lots of perks.
If this sounds good feel free to reach me directly at mdurgavich+hn@kayak.com
It's simple in theory but hard in practice. It likely has to come from guidance. As a parent, I expect I will have to teach her how to engage with people both on and offline.
There's a reason we force kids to line up and shake the opposing team's hands after a soccer game.
I'm not posting to comment on whether this pressure is good or bad, but merely to point out it exists. We live in a culture that celebrates weddings and proposals and scandalizes divorce (look at any tabloid for copious examples), but has little to say about the tenure between.
The trend of dating long term, co-habitation, and finally "tying the knot" late in the relationship is an interestingly recent development in America. I'm curious to see how the data on US divorce evolves as this trend matures. Most of my peers (I'm late Gen X) and Millenials I know are following this pattern.
I suspect it is a direct reaction to generations raised in divorced households, but I have no proof of this.
EDIT: small clarification.
FWIW, developing on their BlackBerry 10 series phones was an absolute joy. Great hardware and lots of options for realizing apps.
If CS intrigues you, sign up for the most advanced courses you can handle. Also, be sure not to shortchange yourself when it comes to a foundation. Lots of people can "write code" without a good understanding of datastructures and algorithms. Get as much there as you can, as it only pays dividends as you grow your software skills.
Another advantage of having a headstart is you can diversify your education. I'd recommend some electrical engineering / hardware classes to complement software; understanding memory access patterns, CPU caches, multiple cores, busses, interrupts, and basic circuits are all useful things to have in your back pocket.
Be curious! Be proactive! Reach out to professors you like or that other students rave about. Trust me, they are flattered when students take an interest in them and their work. Build those relationships as they can lead to:
- independent projects in a mentor/mentee capacity
- research opportunities
- internships
- teaching assistant opportunities (I got paid $15 / hour to assist students with assignments. I once did this for a class I was taking alongside them because the prof needed help and he trusted me and my skills.)
A relationship with a professor is such a good idea I'd say it's essential. You will one day need a letter of reference for something, and you want it to come from faculty who knows you, likes you, knows your interest, etc and can write glowingly and convincingly of your skills and personality. Too many people I knew hit up someone they took a class from and got an A in, and it was a superficial and shallow thing that didn't really get them that far.
I'll stop here, but feel free to message me for more if interested.
As a resident of a neighboring town not technically on "lockdown", residents nevertheless acted that way. Streets were empty. Businesses closed. It was very very quiet. This was obviously done by choice, not mandate. Yes, there was some fear driving this, as a police officer a few miles away was killed for being in the wrong place at the wrong time (cop killings do not occur often in the Boston-area suburbs). However, a large motivator was solidarity with other towns on lockdown. We really wanted to give the police every chance they could to catch this guy. The value judgement was made by private business owners and employers to support that effort.
