The ANT+ article was really interesting and it seems like a real shame that it's going the way of the dodo. Now I know what those little status symbols are on some of the gym equipment. Seems like a great protocol for the use case, but nit massively surprising it couldn't survive on that niche alone. Shame.
SuperNinKenDo··on Pebble, Rebble, and a path forward
Dunno if you saw the previous post about the situation, but seems that attempts to do so for months have not born fruit, and only led to more trust breakdown.
SuperNinKenDo··on Origin and Evolution of the Globstar
Ironically (at two levels) I learned about globstar through PowerShell. Why is this ironic on two levels? Because I discovered it while researching the best way to perform a recursion in a specific situation and ran into a bunch of threads of people bemoaning globstar's absence from pwsh. So, now I know about its presence elsewhere.
SuperNinKenDo··on Welcome, the entire land – "Hello, world" in hieroglyphics (2009)
For what it's worth, I'm interested. So far I've just bought a couple books on Middle Egyptian and read a basic intro that my library had, but between all the languages I'm already learning, couldn't really justify putting in the time.

A study group or study partner would probably be enough extra motivation to get basic proficiency at the least. So if you're willing let me know if you find/wish to create something.

I agree this is a big part of it.

Office sucks?: "Man Office sucks these days."

The "weird" alternative you expended political capital to put everyone on works slightly differently or lacks a feature out of the box?: "What were you thinking?!"

SuperNinKenDo··on Dillo, a multi-platform graphical web browser
Was a lifesaver to me back in the day, running my frankenstein machine pieced together from useless spares I cobbled together from the computer store I worked at briefly. Every piece of software I ran was trimmed down to the absolute minimum, and it was a time before the web was completely unusuable without an ad blocker. Fond memories of Dillo.
SuperNinKenDo··on A change of address led to our Wise accounts being shut down
Probable just boilerplate. Both parts of the statement can be read so many ways as to be effectively meaningless.
SuperNinKenDo··on Israel demanded Google and Amazon use secret 'wink' to sidestep legal orders
Because they overplayed their hand and they know it, so the only thing left to do is go all in and hope the walls they built hold long enough for this to be a fait accompli.
SuperNinKenDo··on Poison, Poison Everywhere
When I was a baby we lived virtually directly under the Sydney Harvour Bridge, I got lead poisoning as a result of runoff from the bridge. The combination of leaded petrol and leaded paint runoff poisoned the soil in playgrounds and the area more generally.

My case and probably those of others lead to a huge cleanup of the bridge.

My life has been absolutetly plagued with chronic health and "developmental" problems. Neurodivergence and other conditions litter my family tree, but they seem to effect me much more severely than they do most of my relatives.

I often find myself wondering these days if my life would have featured significantly less hardship were it not for the lead poisoning.

I don't understand how you can ask that question with a straight face given the last 50 odd years.
SuperNinKenDo··on Big Data was used to see if TCM was scientific (2023)
I've taken pretty low grade ginseng and gotten a pretty noticeable stimulant effect from it. That's certainly never happened with ginger.
SuperNinKenDo··on Traditional Chinese Medicine Has Not Been Vindicated by Science
On the other hand, this does lead to a situation where people simultaneously scoff at a school of thought while telling you that all the useful stuff from said school has already been integrated into whatever orthodoxy they represent. Must be nice to be able to claim credit for something while deriding the people who actually discovered it. Not that I'm a huge "stan" for TCM or anything. I'm very much not.
SuperNinKenDo··on New US visa rules will force foreign students to unlock social media profiles
I am from Australia where China has flexed its trade leverage on a pretty much yearly basis against us as a collective, and has often tried to use our University systems supposed reliance on Chinese students to try and affect discourse in our Universities.

But even then, China doesn't stoop to the pathetic level of expending thus kind of soft-power on defending some third power that has managed to get it by the balls.

SuperNinKenDo··on It's true, “we” don't care about accessibility on Linux
Having worked many years in non-profits, it's sadly an all too common issue. I have a number of explanations for why people are like this toward people who are already giving more in a month than the critic will give in a lifetime, ranging from a kind of need to belittle the giver's generosity - to quell the critic's own discomfort at the fact that they may not be as generous a person as they would like to think, through to many people taking generosity as a sign of weakness and exploitability - and thereby somebody who can be bullied to let off a bit of steam.

It's exhausting though. The giver ends up in this awful moral quandary where all they want to do is throw their hands up and say "eff-this and eff-all-of-you", but at the same time, this kind of person if the type who can't bring themselves to let the crappiness of others lead them to abandon vulnerable people in need. And so the spiral toward burnout spins down and down.

Free speech for me but not for thee.

America holds immense leverage when it comes to education, and now it seeks to use that leverage to export control of people's speech, thoughts, and movements abroad.

At least when China does this kinda thing there's not so strong a stench of hypocrisy.

SuperNinKenDo··on Doctors Were Preparing to Remove Their Organs. Then They Woke Up.
Colour me skeptical of that notion. Trauma and anxiety have a way of driving themselves deep, and somebody who has anxiety problems emerge or worsen an indeterminate amount of time post-intervention is unlikely to ever establish the link, let alone then go on to prove it to anybody else if they somehow did stumble upon the answer.

SuperNinKenDo··on Doctors Were Preparing to Remove Their Organs. Then They Woke Up.
When you consider the growing evidence that we've seen over the years that apparently unresponsive people can be fully aware of their surroundings, this is truly terrifying.

From some of the remarks at the end of the article one really statts to wonder how much survivorship bias there is here... How many procedures went forward despite the medical professionals in the room being uncomfortable...

SuperNinKenDo··on DiffX – Next-Generation Extensible Diff Format
But this is a proposal for a diff format, not a specification for a VCS.
SuperNinKenDo··on DiffX – Next-Generation Extensible Diff Format
Isn't that technically not the case if you wanted to apply a specific patch without every other change that's been made to the same file.

The more changes, the more likely it is for a patch to fail, but in principle it seems like cherry-picking and applying a change is a valid use of a diff.

SuperNinKenDo··on I Want to Love Linux. It Doesn't Love Me Back: Post 3 - Console Access
I've been reading these posts, and it's got me wondering. What are the main obstacles for creating distributions which are specifically made for the vision impaired. And relatedly, what are the obstacles for creating "spins" which specialiwe in catering to the vision impaired. Not merely a rhetorical question.
SuperNinKenDo··on TheForger's Win32 API Tutorial
It's important to learn Linux's only stable ABI after all.
SuperNinKenDo··on Path Isn't Real on Linux
I was trying to understand what the lede was here, and it turns out the author assumed that PATH was something understood by the kernel, which is rather an odd assumption, but perhaps one that others make.

I did get one thing out of this though. I had honestly wondered for the longest time why we need to call env to get the same functionality as PATH in a shebang.

Ironically, thanks to either an article I read here (or on the crustacean site) recently, I already knew that the shebang is something which is parsed by the kernel, but had not put two and two together at all.

Much like the author. So goes to show the benefits of exploring and thinking about seemingly "obvious" concepts.

SuperNinKenDo··on Cursor IDE support hallucinates lockout policy, causes user cancellations
Awesome. It warms my heart that both parties who are supporting AI, users and company, felt its negative effects. We can only hope this continues to happen.
SuperNinKenDo··on How to win an argument with a toddler

SuperNinKenDo··on How to win an argument with a toddler
I agree with your overall point, but funnily enough, I kind of feel like both responses would piss me off a little in most cases. People delivering the second response often can't help projecting the fact that they really don't give two damns, and they often have an impatience that betrays that they're just trying to get you to shut up, so the whole thing feels fake in addition to being unhelpful. Would probably still prefer it to someone saying I was an idiot, but I'm not even entirely certain of that
SuperNinKenDo··on Tomb Engine
The code wouldn't contain any IP. You would need the original media files to play the actual games. As long as there's no code taken from the original code, there's unlikely to be serious IP issues.

EDIT: No! After browsing the website a bit, the developers actually explicitly mention that you should use their media and not a rip of the original assets. Bizarre.
