SuperNinKenDo··on Clamiga: Common Lisp for the Amiga
Super excited to see native MorphOS support. That is awesome. Might drag the ol' G5 out and have a time.
SuperNinKenDo··on 2027 memory capacity is reportedly sold out
This is essentially what I did and it worked a treat. Get in while the getting's still good. Having a modern but DDR4 compatible system is not obly a great way to get up and running now, but will help see you through this crisis long term.
SuperNinKenDo··on Apple defeats liability for not scanning iCloud for CSAM
Certainly anyone promoting this as a policy goal would brush over the fact that you stated, and exagerate the benefits. However I doubt everybody owning a handgun would go out and buy a rifle. There is also the likelihood that many situations involving the use of handguns would not eventuate if the person in question had a rifle instead.

But again, I'm not actually in favour of this anyway.

SuperNinKenDo··on Apple defeats liability for not scanning iCloud for CSAM
Not to get too off track, but it's actually an interesting case in that it's one of those where weighting for prevalence of ownership wouldn't matter for the purpose of discovering the more effective measure. If you did something to restrict handguns you would prevent more death than restricting other firearms.

Also, not that it has any bearing on what I said, but I'm decidedly pro-gun for any repliers who want to follow up on this tangent.

SuperNinKenDo··on Hyprland 0.55 announced the switch to Lua for its config files
Emacs seems to do a pretty good job handling this with the "Customize" interface. Presents a bunch of variables the user is intended to customise in something resembling a familiar interface, then it inserts the values into the Elisp init file. Someone could use and customise Emacs for years and never really touch Elisp directly. But then, oh, those text fields actually take lists, which in Emacs Lisp is the same as taking code. Maybe you use that for a while until you get comfortable and wanna try modifying something not surfaced in "customize", where you can discover init.el, etc. Etc. It's not perfect, but to me it's really close, it's the model of progression I wish all UIs for customisation used, personally.
SuperNinKenDo··on LEDs’ potential to save our night skies
I hate outdoor LED lights so much, I won't be surprised if a couple decades or centuries from now we discover that these things have been doing permanent damage to people's eyes. It's getting harder and more unpleasant to walk at night, I can't see and my eyes legitimately hurt every couple of minutes.
SuperNinKenDo··on The Zen of Parallel Programming
I appreciate somebody trying to connect disparate concepts to give both some kind of fresh perspective; perfectly happy to entertain analogies that break down if you look at them too hard... but like somebody else said, this reads like a draft or a foreword. Also, what about any of this is "zen"? This goes nowhere and has no connection with the concepts put forward in the title. Chucking "the zen of" in front of anything for no reason was tired 10 years ago, yet people keep doing it. We get it, you've heard of the book.
SuperNinKenDo··on When can a power company take your land for data center infrastructure?
Dunno why you think it's obvious that I should be able to have the state seize your house for my own personal infrastructure just because I demand I chew through so much electricity that the local infrastructure can't support my demands.
SuperNinKenDo··on When can a power company take your land for data center infrastructure?
Actually, strictly speaking, it's /more/ debatable. Using eminent domain to seize land for the data centre itself gets a much more generally negative reaction, while seizing it for the purpose of infrastructure to supply said datacentre - and therefore, at least arguably, alleviate strain on the infrastructure used by everyone else - has more nuance and more room for debate.
SuperNinKenDo··on Three ways people respond to a problem (other than solving it)
It's neglecting a fourth: Refusing to actually solve the problem so that they can continue to complain about it being someone else's fault.
SuperNinKenDo··on ECHR confirms ethical veganism is a protected philosophical belief
I was kind of surprised when I traveled to NY and SF from Melbourne. I knew Melbourne was fairly up there in vego/vegan friendliness, but took it for granted that NY and SF would be a cakewalk. Hardly appalling, but there were times I could not eat anything on the menu at some places and I'm only vegetarian, and in many instances I had only a single option. Was a little strange.
SuperNinKenDo··on This blog is written in en-GB
Somebody once went through one of my Stack* answers and changed (unilaterally edited) every Commonwealth spelling to American spelling...
SuperNinKenDo··on I was recently diagnosed with anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis
I'm pretty sure someone will accuse me of reading my own trauma into this, but AgentMasterRace mentions also being chronically ill. No mention of timing between Ex significantly imroving and deciding that they had "better options", but the sad reality of life is that many people you love, including friends, will never care for you the way you might care for them, and once they have "better options" will cast you aside, even if you're the reason they have those options in the first place.

Human relationships are brutal sometimes. I still choose to treat others the way I would want to be treated, and some people _actually_ reciprocate, and you eventually learn who is who in your life, but this requires that you be open to the fact the majority won't, and that you will sometimes feel betrayed and used. You just have to accept that it's your decision to make, and decide what kind of person you want to be.

Other commenters are also probably right to one extent or another, the dynamic of the relationship probably changed pretty dramatically and that can create problems regardless.

Anyway, poor old AgentMasterRace probably feels like a depressing episode has turned into something they'd rather it didn't. Sorry for pontificating over your traumatic(?) event with allusions to my own. If I'm reading the meaning of their username correctly though, I feel less bad about it, lol.

SuperNinKenDo··on Preparing for KDE Plasma's Last X11-Supported Release
Same. Given that no Wayland compositors implement it, or anything like it, and from some of my surface level reading about how compositors work, I get the impression Wayland is particularly ill-suited for this feature. I don't understand enough to understand exactly why, or why a new Wayland "protocol" would be required, though that seemed to be the answer. I hate not having this feature, it makes me feel trapped in an entire desktop paradigm I don't desire to be locked into.
SuperNinKenDo··on Odysseus – self-hosted AI workspace
Is it called Odysseus because it's always spitting out verbose bullshit?
SuperNinKenDo··on Show HN: Freenet, a peer-to-peer platform for decentralized apps
Thanks so much for the heads up. I loved Freenet as a concept back in the day and used to devote a significant chunk of my tiny hard drive to trying to help out. I looked it up a few months ago and honestly thought I was experiencing some kind of memory dailure when I saw the new project under that name. Was wondering what the project I was so excited for had _actually_ been called all those years back. Now I know what happened, and where to find the project I actually liked.
SuperNinKenDo··on Show HN: Freenet, a peer-to-peer platform for decentralized apps
Disagreeable, passionate people are passionate about doing projects that go against the grain. It's really obvious to anybody actually asking the question instead of just being rhetorical and not giving it any actual thought. The answer is a commpetely obvious one, but one which makes some people uncomfortable, such that they'd rather not confront it, lest they have to confront its implications.
SuperNinKenDo··on Valve removes free game from Steam after players discover it contains malware
Anything that wants to traverse your filesystem could do so trivially from a wineprefix, but stuff like sniffing your browser extensions might be harder depending on the technique.
SuperNinKenDo··on Valve removes free game from Steam after players discover it contains malware
I've formally studied gamedev, but haven't done anything in over a decade, but even before you get to the thorny issue of anti-cheat sustems, games rely on running at a(n often very) low level and doing unconventional things. I imagine they're one of the hardest things there are to sandbox without causing massive levels of breakage. But someone more knowledgeable about either side of the equation (sandboxing and/or game development) might be able to shed more light.
SuperNinKenDo··on Anthropic Joins the Blender Development Fund as Corporate Patron
I'm so sick of it. I'm so fucking sick of it.
SuperNinKenDo··on Pompeii archaeologists use AI to reconstruct man killed in volcano's eruption
Our perceptions about the past will be further and further shaped by an oroborous of AI hallucinations and embellishments.
SuperNinKenDo··on A new spam policy for “back button hijacking”
Why on earth would I go out of my way to publicise that information in a public forum?
SuperNinKenDo··on A new spam policy for “back button hijacking”
Has definitely happened to me. Especially if I try the "click back a couple times quickly" method first.
SuperNinKenDo··on A new spam policy for “back button hijacking”
Probably should have mentioned it, but I was on my phone browser where that option either doesn't exist or isn't surfaced well. A long press on the back button just does the same thing as tapping once, so I'm all out of ideas.
SuperNinKenDo··on A new spam policy for “back button hijacking”
Honestly if your site is buggy in a way that effectively breaks the browser, maybe you should be punished.
SuperNinKenDo··on A new spam policy for “back button hijacking”
Happened to me yesterday through a link off here. I was already expecting it given the domain, but usually mashing back fast enough does the trick eventually. Not this time. Had to kill the tab.
SuperNinKenDo··on Slovenia becomes first EU country to introduce fuel rationing
Globalization can run both ways. It can also create much more sensitivity to disruption as bets are placed in a system with a lot more moving parts.
SuperNinKenDo··on VitruvianOS – Desktop Linux Inspired by the BeOS
Yeah. I installed it to HDD and it worked great. You'd think the thing had an SSD ot was so snappy. No issues with compat on the drive or anything.
SuperNinKenDo··on VitruvianOS – Desktop Linux Inspired by the BeOS
I suspect it was a freak occurence, but I actually had incredible luck running Haiku on an old laptop back in the day. It was incredibly fast, and just about all the amenities you'd expect worked with no or minimal intervention.
