SulfurHexaFluri··on Apple urged to root out rating scams as developer highlights enforcement failure
It works for loading safari links I know but I needed something that can show me the text content of the qr code since this was not a link.
SulfurHexaFluri··on Google’s approach to replacing the cookie is drawing antitrust scrutiny
The majority of users do care about privacy but its a concept they struggle to understand and they do not know when they are being tracked, what is being tracked or how to stop it.

The EU was on the right track about requiring tracking to be opt in while also having an option to say no without being blocked from the service.

Browsers are way more complex than OSs these days. Mozillas Servo project had over 40,000 commits and still wasn't ready for production and it was only a small part of the browser. I don't think there is anything else that could have 40k commits and still be a tech demo.
SulfurHexaFluri··on Google’s approach to replacing the cookie is drawing antitrust scrutiny
Yes it does. Users now have a unique IP address that is now static. Yes you can rotate your exact IP inside your block but you still keep the same subnet.

I have only been using ios for a few months but I have noticed the App Store is full of so much crap. Coming from Android with FDroid installed it was easy to find free utilities that may have been basic but they were reliable and ad free. Now on the app store the first 100 results is paid or ad filled.

I wanted to find a QR code scanner the other day so I could debug the qr codes I was generating and the first app on the store was asking me to sign up for a subscription before I could start scanning codes. Who is paying a subscription to scan qr codes??

SulfurHexaFluri··on I Still Use RSS
Its still alive because most blog software generates one by default. I found out my blog has rss and I didn't even know
SulfurHexaFluri··on GoboLinux
I think silverblue will take off because it seems a lot simpler to use. I haven't tried out either yet but it looks like silverblue simply asks you to use flatpak instead of dnf while nix requires you to learn a complex config programming language.
SulfurHexaFluri··on GoboLinux
You wouldn't use docker, Flatpak would be the choice for containerized gui applications. I'm not an expert but it looks like the kde and gnome env gets shared between flatpak applications.
SulfurHexaFluri··on GoboLinux
The better way to do this is to use flatpak. The sandboxing will be a major benefit for your ancient firefox version as well.
SulfurHexaFluri··on Just because I have a vertical screen doesn’t mean I’m on a phone
Is DPI a good measure though? Some cheap phones have rubbish DPIs while expensive monitors have very high dpi.

Not sure if this exists already but the idea method would be to use the physical size in cm of the display.

SulfurHexaFluri··on Just because I have a vertical screen doesn’t mean I’m on a phone
Accessibility features are almost always not worth it purely from a profit point of view. They get added because as a society we decided that everyone should go out of their way to accommodate these users because they have no choice and should not be locked out of life.

The author here can simply deal with it or turn their monitor the other way.

SulfurHexaFluri··on Just because I have a vertical screen doesn’t mean I’m on a phone
Because many laptop users have a touch screen.
SulfurHexaFluri··on Intel leak: 20GB of source code, chipset design and Intel Management Engine (ME)
On windows, do nothing, it will be applied automatically. On linux and mac, press update in the app store / gnome software.
SulfurHexaFluri··on Intel leak: 20GB of source code, chipset design and Intel Management Engine (ME)
Even on linux its trivial. Just pressing update in the gnome software program will update the firmware.
SulfurHexaFluri··on Intel leak: 20GB of source code, chipset design and Intel Management Engine (ME)
Did anyone find anything interesting in it?
SulfurHexaFluri··on Investigation Xoth: Smartphone location tracking
At least one of the apps listed (Telegram) uses location when you choose to like sharing your location with people and I have never seen it request location otherwise. Puts the rest of the data in to question for me.
SulfurHexaFluri··on Investigation Xoth: Smartphone location tracking
The article seems somewhat absent of information, They list telegram as one of these location tracker apps. I use telegram and it has some features like sending your location to a friend but I'm not aware of it ever just grabbing your location without requesting it. I'm also not sure that ios allows grabbing the location without the app being in use either.
SulfurHexaFluri··on GitHub Should Start an App Store
Snap is another locked down platform where the Canonical repo is hardcoded in to the tool. Flatpak is a much better platform where you can specify your own repo source like flathub or any other source you want.
SulfurHexaFluri··on GitHub Should Start an App Store
There is an extra thing you can do to make fdroid admin but it requires root. It does allow auto updates though.
SulfurHexaFluri··on GitHub Should Start an App Store
Hosting with a dynamic IP is not particularly hard. I had a raspberry pi ping my IP back to the dns server minutely and it worked well.
SulfurHexaFluri··on GitHub Should Start an App Store
Most desktop app stores suck because they have nothing in them because developers stay far away if given the choice. No developer would willingly give away 30% of their profits and face being randomly removed if they can just provide the app directly to users.
SulfurHexaFluri··on GitHub Should Start an App Store
As long as sandboxing between apps remains, it doesn't matter if you download random crapware. They may do bad things while you are using the app but the damage is limited to what you type in to the app itself rather than on windows where programs have access to everything.
SulfurHexaFluri··on Chrome 89 Beta: advanced hardware interactions, web sharing on desktop
The competition is already pretty much extinguished.
SulfurHexaFluri··on Analyzing and breaking an externally encrypted HDD
This is a USB hard drive though. Even a cheap laptop can encrypt data faster than you can transfer over USB.

Maybe I might understand if this was some kind of server SSD but even then im not sure it would make sense.

SulfurHexaFluri··on Facebook shuts popular stock trading group amid GameStop frenzy
The problem was that he didn't make his own military to defend the land
SulfurHexaFluri··on Cuffless device delivers clinically accurate blood pressure measurements
The accuracy is also often questionable. I have tested cheap smart watches that have heart rate info about as accurate as rolling a dice.
SulfurHexaFluri··on Analyzing and breaking an externally encrypted HDD
What is even the point of encrypted drives over just using filesystem encryption managed by the OS? I'm guessing some minor portability benefit across OSs but is this really worth trusting the OEM over?
SulfurHexaFluri··on Facebook shuts popular stock trading group amid GameStop frenzy
Just build your own country on an island to run your stock market.
SulfurHexaFluri··on Facebook shuts popular stock trading group amid GameStop frenzy
Facebook is kind of fucked both ways tbh. If they don't remove anything they get blasted for hosting violence and abuse and if they remove too much they get blasted for censorship. Its impossible for them to remove just the right amount of stuff since thats subjective and they could never train a million moderators on how to apply it.

I think the real solution here is we need to break up the social media companies. Have each community be its own self hosted website again where the moderators of the community take responsibility for it and apply their own rules. The government can then step in and take action if the communities are illegal.

SulfurHexaFluri··on Robinhood Play Store listing went from 329K reviews to 180K in few hours
A fake review would be a review left by someone who is not a real user or customer. Thats almost impossible for google to work out but they would make it an aim to get as close as possible.

You want to try to avoid the mob jumping in on the reviews of something they never used because of some bad news.
