I was not on HN prior to covid. The early news I read was likely the plague scare[0], but I definitely read the reuters article[1] when it came out which prompted me to talk to my coworkers about it. I was not sounding any alarms though, more like "check this out..." in the lunchroom.

On top of that, iirc even if you never have an accident or use a car, living next to a busy road has also been correlated with lower life expectancy regardless of socio-economic indicators.
I was much more frustrated on windows when i ran into issues and your best bet was some incompetent support, and watching blue screens til you come to the conclusion that your system is scrapped, who knows why, and you need to reinstall and start over from scratch.
On arch you can save your dotfiles, make snapshots, chroot to fix things, and so on, there's tons of safeguards you can put in place, and tons of options for remediation. You really just need to RTM.
On top of that if you have a gripe about some software not working how you think it should, you can usually hack it or replace it. If you have an idea for some new functionality you want you can usually find/install some existing software for your needs in like 2 seconds, or you can find the repo of your software and submit an issue or PR.
Alternatively you can also just string together existing tools in a script in order to fulfill your needs. I did this recently to create an OCR screenshot to clipboard tool using tesseract and flameshot, something I wouldn't have even considered possible on windows.
I really used to beat myself up over the whole "wasted potential" feeling I'd get. Especially so after my teachers were fifty-fifty "you have great potential, apply yourself" and "you're a jackass, you won't amount to anything".
I always wonder how things could have been different. If I might've got into some irl engineering instead of software, or just advanced in my career faster, etc.
My biggest hope is that my sporadic deep dives into different subjects will eventually lead to a good idea to invest in, or some oss i can get sponsored to save me from the despair of competing/comparing against my neurotypical peers with degrees.
Would it be safe to assume the limiting factor with this or any algo of this type might always be availability of context/data, and these niche questions might always be an edge case?
Are there alglrithms that can reliably extrapolate "new" data/context that does not exist yet and is accurate IRL?
Sorry if my terminology or understanding is way off, I don't know much about this field.
Google's hardware support IME is a shit show. They need to stop spending all their time playing with ML tricks that nobody uses outside of ads and keynotes (aside from normal camera stuff), and start listening to customers and addressing bugs and missing features that even the mid-tier chinese phones have rolled out.
I'm buying a oneplus next time around and never looking back, idc if google's new chip gives me 2x battery life at the same price, it's not worth the frustration.
My biggest gripe was the lag to request ddg and then mdn and then parse it and pipe it. I wanted something simpler like `man` for mdn. Now i imagine having the documentation already in md and keeping it local, i'm a step closer and it'll be more powerful with tools like fzf, ripgrep, and mdcat.
Gotta check if there's already a search tool for MD that weighs heading levels, or code blocks, bold text, etc
Next phone I get will definitely not be a pixel. Hopefully the next fairphone will be a tad more competitive, and hopefully by then linux on the fairphone will be more polished. A boy can dream...
I once watched a climber free climb a moderate 30 meter route me and my friends had just completed with ropes, and he mentioned his LSD hallucination was peaking as he saw us at the top.
I considered that maybe climbers like him have exceptionally higher risk tolerance or a habituated comfort with psychedelics and climbing. However, as someone with a reasonable amount of exposure to both of those (separately), it still baffled me. This feels like a more palatable explanation in tandem with higher risk tolerances and habituation.
