SuddsMcDuff··on Ask HN: How are you preparing for COVID-19 disruptions?
On the other hand, if you delay contracting the virus for as long as possible, you leave more time for more effective treatments to be made available.
SuddsMcDuff··on Intro To Pattern Matching – Covers C# 9
C# can only go so far down the road towards F# without introducing currying and partial application. I can't see those ever being introduced into C#.
SuddsMcDuff··on Webcam, Lights, and Audio for Remote Work, Podcasting, Videos, and Streaming
Do you remember what the factory default was? I expect most people who aren't au fait with pickup patterns will either leave it on the factory default or put it in stereo (which looks very similar to omni).
SuddsMcDuff··on Webcam, Lights, and Audio for Remote Work, Podcasting, Videos, and Streaming
I think the section on mics could be enhanced by explaining a little about the different pickup patterns available. A cardioid pickup is a lot more appropriate for these uses than an omni pickup would be. The author mentions the Yeti mic picking up a lot of background noise - I'd bet that that mic has an omni pick up pattern. Some mics even have a small switch which allows you to cycle between different pickup patterns.

EDIT: While I've always known them as pickup patterns, I've just noticed that Wikipedia refers to them as polar patterns. I assume this is a more universal term.

SuddsMcDuff··on Ask HN: What Skills to Acquire in 2020?
This is why I have a cold shower every morning.
SuddsMcDuff··on BMW Connected Apps Protocol
It's not just German manufacturers. I drive a Lexus and I can relate to a lot of the things being said here. The car is wonderful but the software feels like an afterthought.
SuddsMcDuff··on Finland's Prime Minister Suggests a Four-Day Workweek and Six-Hour Days
It's true there are innumerable variables at play here. The nature of the work is a huge factor as well. It's probably futile to try and come up with a general rule of thumb. It could be that people already have too much spare time on their hands which is not being filled with meaningful endeavour. It's also undoubtedly the case that many peoples working hours are not filled with meaningful endeavour either.

Thank you for telling me the purpose of life in a very matter-of-fact way. I think you would find a lot of people who would find your assertion extremely debatable. To be frank, I pity anyone who thinks the purpose of their life is to have fun.

SuddsMcDuff··on Finland's Prime Minister Suggests a Four-Day Workweek and Six-Hour Days
That's true of course, and I'm not saying that more work is necessarily more desirable any more than I'm saying that less work is necessarily desirable. My point is that the premise of the article assumes that spending less time at work is automatically better, and I would challenge that premise.
SuddsMcDuff··on Finland's Prime Minister Suggests a Four-Day Workweek and Six-Hour Days
It's not a religious argument by any means. It's a common idiom which means that "if people don't have anything to do with their time, they are more likely to get involved in trouble and criminality." (see https://www.usingenglish.com/reference/idioms/devil+finds+wo...).
SuddsMcDuff··on Finland's Prime Minister Suggests a Four-Day Workweek and Six-Hour Days
I don't think it should be assumed that less time at work is necessarily preferable. What will people do with all their additional spare time? Sure, they might spend their days learning art, history, philosophy. They might take up writing poetry, painting or learning the piano. Or, they might vegetate in front of the TV, take up drinking as a hobby, argue with strangers online and slowly decay into existential nihilism.

The devil will make work for idle hands.

SuddsMcDuff··on Audio Processing for Dummies
I always thought the primary reason for that was that stereo low frequencies, when recorded onto vinyl records, hugely increase the risk of the needle 'jumping' out of the groove and skipping into another one.
SuddsMcDuff··on Go Turns 10
True enough, one could name any year between 1979 and 1985 as the "invention" year of C++, and the claim would have some merit. http://www.cplusplus.com/info/history/
SuddsMcDuff··on Go Turns 10
C++ was invented in 1979.

In 1989 the most popular programming languages, in order of popularity, were:

1. C

2. Ada

3. Pascal

4. Lisp

5. Fortran

6. C++

7. Assembly

8. COBOL

9. BASIC

10. APL

SuddsMcDuff··on Men Are Waiting to Share Some Feelings (2018)
> "By pure rational thought many young men have accepted to treat women like equal human beeings"

You make it sound as though men have never considered women as equal human beings until some recent enlightenment. I find this world view to be absolutely apalling, and arrogant. You're denying a history where the vast, vast majority of relationships between men and women (eg. marriages) were cooperative, reciprocal, and built upon a foundation of mutual respect.

> "The thing we aim for as a society here is defintly worth it (I could experience for myself how amazing a relationship of equals between man and woman can be)"

A relationship of equals betwen a man and a woman is not some novel new concept we should aspire to, it is completely normal and has been for hundreds, if not thousands of years.

SuddsMcDuff··on More than half of the trees that grow only in Europe risk extinction, says IUCN
So time isn't up?

I don't need convincing, I'm not a climate change skeptic. I'm just pointing out that you went too far with the FUD tactic. It's counter productive to your call to action, if you also insinuate that action is futile.

SuddsMcDuff··on More than half of the trees that grow only in Europe risk extinction, says IUCN
> "Time us up already".

Then what's the point writing to our politicians?

SuddsMcDuff··on More than half of the trees that grow only in Europe risk extinction, says IUCN

SuddsMcDuff··on How the UK Security Services neutralised The Guardian
Are you a member of the Labour party?
SuddsMcDuff··on How the UK Security Services neutralised The Guardian
It seems The Guardian is trading on the reputation it built up in years gone by, but no longer lives up to its own high standards.

I respected The Guardian before, nowadays it just seems to be the left equivilent of Breitbart - at least as far left as Breitbart is far right.

SuddsMcDuff··on Rudyard Kipling’s American years
> "Those who write should be judged by their words."

> "Doesn’t matter if they wrote wonderful children’s novels. "

Can you see the contradiction in your argument?

SuddsMcDuff··on Rudyard Kipling’s American years
> "You mean to tell me that you have no lines, no limits?"

Straw man.

> "Would you be so comfortable to praise an artist if you knew he was a murderer? What if he was a rapist? A racist? A thief?"

Yes, absolutely. What you fail to realise is that I'd be praising the art, not the artist. I don't believe this makes me a hypocrite, I think this makes me objective. Praising a piece of art on its own merits in no way condones unrelated character traits of the artist.

> "I have little patience for these “nuanced” views."

I believe you.

> "The Bushes and the Kiplings should be critiqued at every chance."

I agree, but the critique should be rational and objective, and not based on your emotional response to unrelated issues.

> "History should not be kind to George Bush just because can draw a few puppies."

Nobody said it should.

SuddsMcDuff··on Rudyard Kipling’s American years
> "This mans words beat the drums for imperialism, he does not deserve praise."

Why this proclivity to view people as being either entirely good or entirely bad? Is there no room for nuance in your world view? Kipling was a racist and imperialist. He was also a talented poet and novelist who produced some seminal work. Both of those things can be true, they are not mutually exclusive.

SuddsMcDuff··on We Have Ruined Childhood
Genuinely, I can't tell if you're trying to refute the point, or illustrate it.
SuddsMcDuff··on Psytrance Guide
I really love Calyx, and I have some old moving shadow mix cd's (eg. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkyRsbTXNuE). Which sub-genre would you call this? And do you have any more recent recommendations along these lines?
SuddsMcDuff··on Turkmenistan on the brink of collapse?
Thanks, but I didn't need convincing that the Telegraphs article was bullshit. I already knew that and acknowledged them as a "garbage publication" in my first post.

The link you posted is a far better example of journalism imo. I wonder how many views they get compared to the usual clickbait?

SuddsMcDuff··on Turkmenistan on the brink of collapse?
I don't think it's so cut and dry. The Telegraph stupidly exaggerated the results of the poll in order to generate a click-baity headline, which was completely un-necessary. Then you have publications like the New Statesman who then exaggerated the transgression by the Telegraph, calling them "Lies, damned lies", as if 99% of the mainstream media don't exaggerate things in exactly the same way, all whilst injecting a bit of their own unfounded hysteria into the mix ("empty shelves and lorry queues and punch ups outside pharmacies that will inevitably follow").

The media is spiralling out of control. Each trying to out-do the other with ever more outrageous claims and deceitful exaggerations until the whole thing has escalated to tribalistic warfare. Casualty #1: rational debate.

SuddsMcDuff··on Psytrance Guide
IIRC only the Playstation version had licensed music from those artists. Other versions (such as the Saturn version that I owned) had tracks written exclusively by Cold Storage.
SuddsMcDuff··on Turkmenistan on the brink of collapse?
Why would it make me feel better? Why are my feelings even a relevent topic here? There is absolutely no shortage of grandstanding in both camps.

Since you care about my feelings you might like to know that the thing that upsets me most is the almost complete lack of rational debate surrounding this issue. If you could link to a non-partisan, fact based article designed to actually impart information and enable people to make up their own minds, rather than an article designed solely to sway opinion, that might make me feel better.

SuddsMcDuff··on Psytrance Guide
This is great! I now know that "minimal psy" is the name of the genre I like to listen to whilst coding.

I'd love to see something similar for the various sub-genres of drum & bass.

'Psybreaks' really reminds me of the soundtrack to the original Wipeout game, written by Cold Storage (http://www.coldstorage.org.uk/).

SuddsMcDuff··on Turkmenistan on the brink of collapse?
