Stwerner··on Why Google And Facebook Need To Go Dark To Protest SOPA
Good idea. Changing my profile picture to the STOP SOPA one right now.
Stwerner··on Stop reading this blog and learn something
I think that was his way of saying just pick one. Whichever one seems to you like the most popular, go with that. Because it doesn't really matter which you choose, what matters is that you start.
Stwerner··on How to get hired (or, 'The silly story of interviewing in the valley')
Are there any good sites out there that have a lot of these types of problems that are asked in interviews? Sites like http://spoj.pl seem to have problems that are more longer form. But it would be fun to start practicing solving the shorter ones that are asked without the hassle of interviewing to get them.
Stwerner··on The Zelda Test (or Why no Zelda Clones?)
There is one for Sega Genesis that I remember liking a lot when I was younger: Beyond Oasis

Stwerner··on SOPA vote is now December 21
The data is freely available of the amount of money raised by different members of congress, right? I've got an idea for a little mashup to try to raise money against the backers of this bill.
Stwerner··on Vim: revisited
I've been using Vim more or less exclusively for the last year or so, and there is only one feature of Aptana Studio that I miss, and have not been able to find in any Vim plugins. In the directory/project tree in Aptana, files had different styles based on their git status. I think I just need to take a weekend and learn enough vim programming to make it happen as a Nerd Tree plugin.
Stwerner··on Node.js modules you should know about: read
I love this. I recently started my first project using node and these blog posts have been extremely helpful in figuring out the right way to do things, even if I'm not using the specific modules the posts are about.

I kind of felt that the nesting of functions was really ugly, positive there was a better way to do it, but unsure of how to even go about finding out. Can't wait to get home and try out seq now.

Stwerner··on Show HN: A monitoring Bot for your Turntable.fm Room
Hey all, I made this over the last couple weeks learning Node and Mongo in the process. It was originally just for the room I spend time in, but after some interest for one for other rooms, I made it more generic and easier for anyone to set one up of their own. It is built off Turntable API[1] by Alain Gilbert.

Stwerner··on Mac Text Editors and Navigation
I've been noticing a lot of talk about BBEdit lately and am having a hard time finding what features might set it apart from apps like Textmate or VIM. Are there any features that aren't in other editors that I'm just missing? Two of my coworkers use it and I haven't been able to witness anything in particular, but with a line in the article like "I'm a big BBEdit fan" there has to be something I am missing, right?
Stwerner··on To Develop Expertise, Motivation is Necessary but Insufficient
I'm not really surprised, I went through Josh Waitzkin's chessmaster tutorials, and one thing that stuck out was him talking about how his coach had him focus on the mid- an end-game, and hardly any on openings.

The idea I think is that by not knowing openings very well, you end up quickly getting out of the opening book, neutralizing your opponent's advantage and into where you're strongest.

Stwerner··on You're a developer, so why do you work for someone else?
I was in nearly the same position as you around this time last year. It was tough and exhausting for a while until I wasn't learning as much throughout the day. You'll get back to a point where you have the energy to come home at the end of the day and spend a few hours working on your own projects.
Stwerner··on So you want to write JavaScript for a living?
Good point, hadn't thought of that - and I imagine the job description would probably drop some hints that you wouldn't be using any external libs, no?
Stwerner··on So you want to write JavaScript for a living?
Ah, yeah I missed that on my first read through. I guess I'm still interested to see if that is still part of the interview process at a lot of places.
Stwerner··on So you want to write JavaScript for a living?
Is it really necessary to expect a front end developer to have complete knowledge of manipulating the DOM without jQuery (or one of the other libraries)? I'm definitely capable of reminding myself of it, since that is what I learned when I first started learning javascript, I just do not see any benefit to it. I write quite a bit of javascript for my job on a daily basis, and am never without something like jQuery.
Stwerner··on The Greatest Hacks of My Life
I really like reading blog posts on this topic. The "greatest hack" question on the YC app always made me hesitate because I don't really think of anything I do as "hacking". It is good to see different categories of hacks to get an idea of what everyone is talking about. If anyone has any links to good posts in the same vein, I would love if you would share.
Stwerner··on The Facebook Timeline is creepy as hell
I don't know if creepy is the right word, but I get a weird feeling about it. It isn't that I feel like I'm losing my privacy by people seeing things I posted on facebook years ago, it is more that I am not that person anymore - I liked that my facebook profile was a current snapshot of who I am.

I actually enjoyed going through the timeline on my own, reliving some of the memories, and for personal use I think having the timeline available will be really neat to check every couple years or so, but beyond that, I don't know if I want to manage my 'current' image actively enough to keep it open or not.

Stwerner··on Poll: You and Mobile Development
I've only just started working through the big nerd ranch iphone guide and have a few basic, simple ideas for apps that I'll be trying to get onto the app store within the next couple months. No real delusions of grandeur, I'm just curious and have gotten somewhat bored of doing web development, so something new and challenging seemed like a good idea.
Stwerner··on How Karma Should Be Measured
Wow, nice find, never even thought to dig in to that. If you check out the notifo services, they have the information on setting everything up.
Stwerner··on How Karma Should Be Measured
I think this brings up something that has bothered me a little bit about the comment system here. I would really like some kind of notification system when someone has replied to a post of mine because once a link falls off the front page, the conversation pretty much dies unless I randomly check my comments page.
Stwerner··on The Calculus of Grit
I'm about half way through it, though I'm the one who submitted this post. I've been reading since his first Gervais Principle post and really enjoy the way he writes.

That being said Tempo is a lot lower level writing than most of the blog posts, not that that's a bad thing. The book is very interesting, though I need to make sure I am actually paying good attention to what I'm reading. If you've read through the Gervais Principle and A Brief History of the Corporation, and find yourself wanting a lot more, the book will give you a lot.

Stwerner··on The Dollar-Store Economy: How the lowest end of American retail does business
My sister has actually been telling me about this. She has gotten in to "extreme couponing", and there are big groups online sharing information on where to get things from local grocery stores for free or less with promotions like double coupon weekends.
Stwerner··on Cutting-edge IT firms need experts in 'dead' languages
Since I'm taking a Cobol class this next semester for a similar reason, I went searching for whats out there and found some people attempting that: https://github.com/dayashi/cobor
Stwerner··on Stanford Offers 13 classes, including AI, for free
Thanks. I've known about the iPhone application programming course from previous semesters, so this looks promising that they may offer it again this fall. I didn't have a mac until recently, so it will be nice if they do since xcode has changed a lot from what the courses available to download now use.
Stwerner··on Stanford Fall 2011 - Introduction to Databases
All of these online Stanford classes seem very cool. I hope that enough people sign up for these that grading and certificates become more popular from all of the highly respected schools.
Stwerner··on Low-level x86 code compression for 64k intros
What resources are there available, or how does someone start getting into the demoscene? Are there any good websites or books for a complete beginner?
Stwerner··on Apoptosis Gem - Which lines in your project need to die?
Michael Feathers is the author of Working Effectively With Legacy Code. This is basically that software projects, as they age, have a tendency to become huge unwieldy monstrosities.

While this gem is kind of a joke, reminding you of older code that was written a long time ago when you knew less about the problem domain than you do now (since you've been working on it for the last year), checking older code for refactoring/rewriting opportunities can make life easier for you in the future or whoever maintains the code after you.

Speaking as someone who inherited a huge untested codebase - debugging those sections that were written early on and work most of the time, but have never been refactored to take advantage of things that were learned later on in the project, is pretty unpleasant.

Stwerner··on Apoptosis Gem - Which lines in your project need to die?
Cool, thanks! I whipped this up the night after the talk so there are probably some kind of inefficient parts in the interest of getting it released quickly. I'll get right on that.
Stwerner··on How to seem good at everything: Stop doing stupid shit
There may not be a strict "Teacher/Student" analogue for CS, but it is such a young discipline that I would imagine it would be pretty easy to trace a "lineage" for everyone back to certain branching events or influencers.
Stwerner··on Is turntable.fm legal?
I'm suggesting a little bigger than that - Blizzard is making a ton of money from WoW subscriptions every month, and $12/month for turntable would be pretty easy for me to justify.
Stwerner··on Is turntable.fm legal?
I wouldn't be surprised if they start seeing legal trouble soon if it hasn't started already. I would gladly pay money to use it, if it comes to that, as I haven't had this much fun with a site for a very long time.
