StuffMaster··on Mornings Don't Make You Moral
>I'm 20, don't drink caffeine or go out more than once or twice a month. Left to my own devices, in a few weeks I'd be falling asleep around 10AM and waking up at 5PM.

I'd bet that might not be so without electronics :)

StuffMaster··on Embracing SQL in Postgres
>Thus re-inventing Lotus Notes.

I would like to veto this with deadly weapons - up to and including nuclear.

StuffMaster··on How to get into an admin account on a Windows computer
Actually you can, by exporting/importing the right registry keys. Or at least you could on XP.
StuffMaster··on Finish one thing today
That's playing, not doing!
StuffMaster··on The reversible USB Type-C connector is turning heads at CES
Unless they changed the protocol, USB will always be undesirable for transporting video and network data. Not that you can't, but thunderbolt is much better suited.
StuffMaster··on Celebrating 10 Years of Firefox
Switch to Foobar so you can be whole.
StuffMaster··on Wifi: “beamforming” only begins to describe it
Is this anything like how phased-array radar works?
StuffMaster··on Quantum Gravity Expert Says "Philosophical Superficiality" Has Harmed Physics
Those experiments always use variations on the word "stop". The speed of light does not vary.

In those experiments, "stop" usually means absorbed and later re-emitted.

One of the many disadvantages of a closed state...
StuffMaster··on Death by Inches: The battle over the metric system in America
>relevant for common matters

Put it this way: 0 degrees is really cold for a human and 100 is really hot for a human. Water doesn't care if it's cold.

StuffMaster··on Wikipedia refuses to delete photo taken by monkey
That's a decent counter-argument. Perhaps this subject needs to be fought out. Robots (with or without AI) may be taking photographs in the future...
StuffMaster··on Firefox 30.0
Seamonkey.
StuffMaster··on Why did it take so long for Windows to support multi-monitor taskbars?
I used that back on Windows XP, but it felt way too laggy and hackish. Virtuawin is the way to go.
StuffMaster··on Which English?
Online they often combine two-word compound nouns into one word.
StuffMaster··on Google Fiber: Working with content providers to minimize buffering
I was under the impression that such colocation by Youtube, Netflix, etc. had been going on for years.
StuffMaster··on Firefox 29
Really it was Mozilla that rose from Netscape's ashes. Firefox rewrote the UI, but Mozilla never died, it just changed to Seamonkey. It was the best browser for years before Phoenix came along -- for UI and resource problems that I never perceived myself.
StuffMaster··on Stephen Hawking: AI, Potentially the Worst Thing to Happen to Humanity
He also said we should be afraid of intelligent aliens because they will want to steal the earth's resources, like in the movies.

There's no reason to believe that aliens would most likely be malevolent. That's Hollywood logic.

StuffMaster··on Chrome's experiment of hiding the URL is great for security
I would liken more to like the readouts of the car. Say we hide the fuel gauge behind a menu and replace it with a "need gas" symbol. A clueless user might say "I don't want to learn how the fuel gauge or recirculating air button work. I just want to know if I need gas right now."

But knowing how to plan your trips/stops is important, as is knowing where your air is coming from.

StuffMaster··on The Magic of strace
There aren't enough sadfaces in the world for Lotus users.
StuffMaster··on The Soviet Superplane Program That Rattled Area 51 (2011)
A lot of potential, but saltwater would still be a harsh mistress.
StuffMaster··on Superspeed USB 3.1 Announced, Could Bring the End of Thunderbolt
The use case would be to connect to the dock with 1 cable rather than a huge port on the bottom. Or connect to an external drive bay for fast and low overhead access.

The external GPU thing has always been the most fanciful use case.

StuffMaster··on Why JavaScript web applications should embrace traditional URLs
Web UI is well-specified. Click is follow hyperlink. Right click is browser context menu. Middle click is open in new tab, also available from the context menu.

Whether a link opens in a new tab without user intervention is up to the link, and is way overused IMO.

StuffMaster··on Why JavaScript web applications should embrace traditional URLs
> all new tabs to be opened in current tab

I think you're confusing links and tabs. I think you're trying to throw a lot of extra logic into the browser that doesn't belong there.

StuffMaster··on Just-released Fedora 19 adds native support for 3D printers
I rage quit at the installer. Anaconda needed an update, but whoa buddy, not THAT.
StuffMaster··on Google ToS rated: “keeps your searches and logs for an undefined period of time”
Also http://startpage.com. I'm getting more wary of google as time goes on...
StuffMaster··on Under the Hood with the SpaceX Merlin Engine
From my amateur reading, I can say that a large number of engines leads to more failure modes due to interactions and complications, especially regarding vibration.
StuffMaster··on Once a somebody, now a nobody: Starcraft 2 has destroyed my life
I've always considered WoW and Minecraft to be drugs...and I don't do drugs. Simple as that.
StuffMaster··on Why are Europeans White?
Tanning is a recent phenomenon, started in the 20's as I recall.
StuffMaster··on Travel across the Roman Empire in real time with ORBIS
Other eras required border crossings, vastly complicating things.
StuffMaster··on Wozniak calls for open Apple
Whoah there, iTunes is not ease of use. I had an MP3 player before the iPod was ever relased and it was most definitely easier to load music onto.
