StopHammoTime··on 3 years ago, remote top paying gigs were hard to find. Today they are the norm
Exactly.

A lot of teams seem to also struggle with no "face to face" communication. Yeah you can't turn and talk to your colleague but you can press "Call", which arguably is the same amount of effort.

StopHammoTime··on 3 years ago, remote top paying gigs were hard to find. Today they are the norm
In general, less people using the infrastructure around cities means that traveling is more safer, is generally better for the environment, and also supports small business growth in local communities instead of in a few blocks in the big city.

Even people that don't get to work from home still benefit from work from home. At the very least there's one less person to get annoyed with on the commute.

StopHammoTime··on AWS announces forks of Elasticsearch and Kibana
It wouldn't have been picked up by the community if it weren't Open Source. Yes, you may have used it if the current product just appeared on the market with a source available license but that's not what happened.

People used and recommended the software for years because it was Open Source. People contributed to the project because it was Open Source. It became popular BECAUSE of Open Source.

Your argument doesn't work because you wouldn't have known about it if it wasn't Open Source.

StopHammoTime··on Ask HN: Anyone else burnt out due to extended lockdown and work-from-home?
I'm an extrovert. I love every second of lockdown and WFH. It's great - didn't get a cold once last year, felt great every day without a commute. So many wasted hours reclaimed. Sure, I do productive things while commuting, but there's a big difference between having those hours back fully. and making unproductive hours productive.

Best thing that ever happened in regards to work conditions. My only gripe is that so many people fail to understand that "working at home" is different to "working remotely". I wish people were more willing to jump into a meeting for a 15 minute brainstorming session rather than spend 5 hours working out a problem on Slack.

StopHammoTime··on The Problem with Writing-Style Advice
I completely disagree with the author's point. I cannot absorb dry writing, I need to be engrossed in reading to take in the content of a book. The context that the author choose to write the book in allows you to understand the way they think about the topic. Understanding they way an expert thinks about the topic allows you to understand that topic.

Writing facts is not writing, it is listing facts.

StopHammoTime··on An update to the Timescale license
Uhh, kubernetes would be an immediate example. A massive piece of software that has been adapted into every major cloud provider, with all those cloud providers working on that same piece of software.

While Google may have done it to make their own Cloud offering better, it ultimately has succeeded in saturating the container compute market and with their own success has brought plenty of competition.

StopHammoTime··on Google: Open Letter to Australians
Jokes on us, our media is run by a faceless megacorp in another country anyway (News Ltd).
StopHammoTime··on Dear Google Cloud: Your Deprecation Policy Is Killing You
In relation to this, you then have AWS who basically support everything forever until their customers stop using it. They _still_ support people on EC2-Classic even though they would rather not. Every TAM I've come into contact with brags about how they won't deprecate until the customer deprecates.

There's a reason that people trust Amazon with their compute, and that's because in regards to their technology they're trustworthy.

StopHammoTime··on Show HN: Kinopio.club – visual thinking, brainstorming tool
I've been using Kinopio for a few things in the last few weeks. It's a great bit of kit, and for me the excitement of the UI keeps me more interested than traditional mind mapping software.

Pirijan is super responsive on support. Glad to be able to support his project financially!

StopHammoTime··on In spite of an increase in Internet speed, webpage speeds have not improved
While I don't disagree about this problem, most of the comments in this thread are lacking significant context and ignoring obvious problems with server side rendering.

Wordpress is arguably the best and most prominent example of SSR. It is horrible, and a vanilla install of Wordpress generally returns content in 2-3 seconds.

While Javascript adds bloat to the initial page load, generally it reduces significantly (or eliminates entirely) further page loads on a domain. For example, if I have an Vue app, it might take an extra second to load but then it will never have to load any client-side assets again (technically).

The other thing that makes most of these arguments is that they are disingenuous when it comes to making arguments about payloads and computing. It takes may take a significant amount of processing power to generate a json payload, but it most certainly will take an ever larger amount to generate all of the scaffolding that goes with a normal HTML page. Redrawing the HTML on each page load also increases overall network traffic, duplicates load across every page on the service (see Wordpress, again), and centralises front-end complexity in the backend.

StopHammoTime··on Remote work is not necessarily a good thing for the worker
If the only thing stopping you being forgotten in a job is being visible in an office, it might be time for a new job.
StopHammoTime··on How to effectively evade the GDPR and the reach of the DPA
Fundamentally the thing which everyone is missing is that the regulatory authorities can simply say that the data can not be used within the European Union by Rocket Reach. They may not be in the European Union but they can make their product useless in the European Union.
StopHammoTime··on Amazon met with startups about investing, then launched competing products
Plus, if there is any legitimate concern about AWS having access to KMS keys (at this point it would be that they own the servers, and that's about it), you can roll a CloudHSM and import your own keys.

KMS is very clear about it's usage and what it involves. It's obvious that with Symmetrical Encryption AWS obviously needs to know the other end of the key at some point so that it can decrypt the data.

However, as customers can't even export these keys and the whole system is based on using KMS to actually perform the decrypt operations it is a non-starter. It's a lot more secure than most infrastructure which probably encrypts locally but is stored in a broom cupboard with a $10 lock.

StopHammoTime··on Amazon met with startups about investing, then launched competing products
Sales != Engineering (in regards to the first one), AWS have had similar issues. The second one wasn't good.

StopHammoTime··on Show HN: 14 Habits of Highly Productive Developers – New Book
Interesting concepts, given the book a purchase and will take a look this week.
StopHammoTime··on Ask HN: Does anyone have celiac disease and how do you deal with that?
When I was first diagnosed and was largely a loner playing World of Warcraft, it was very easy to stick to a Gluten Free diet. Now, I've gotten older, am in a relationship and spend more time with people, it's been a lot harder to stay well.

My symptoms are specific: when my immune system is working well, I start to act like I'm drunk (slur, can't remember things), and I'll basically sleep for 24 hours. When my immune system is down (like I'm sure it is now), I just sleep all the time and get rashes.

The worst thing that has gotten me as I get older is people guilt me into eating out with them. I really wish people would stop it, because I know it's going to lead me to getting cancer. Despite the protestations, no one takes it seriously. Even comparisons don't work. Unfortunately for most people, unless it's anaphylaxsis they don't think it's real.

I have a strict sick-once, no return policy for restaurants. I don't blame the restaurants, because unless they advertise themselves as Coeliac-accomodating, it's a risk I take. When I go out with family I usually just try to avoid eating, but my girlfriend doesn't like me skipping meals and can be quite indignant about it. The first month we were together I got violently ill because a work function she was at glutened me badly. I wanted to eat nothing, but she wouldn't take no for an answer. The kitchen made some "gluten free" food. It was not gluten free.

StopHammoTime··on Lockdown: Open-source firewall that blocks app tracking, ads, snooping
I did a test of this. uBlock Origin blocked all the calls before it made it to the firewall. IMO why would you use anything else.
StopHammoTime··on Slack’s new WYSIWYG input box is terrible
My Slack just refreshed and now the WYSIWIG is gone, it may have just been rolled back.
StopHammoTime··on Ask HN: How to deal with constantly getting cut off in work discussions?
I would suggest talking to your manager, leader, iteration manager, etc., and raising the impact that this kind of conversation style is having on your work. If this is a regular occurrence the meeting should at least have a temperature check for how everyone feels about something. At the end of the day, this is a management problem and they need to fix it.

StopHammoTime··on I Sell Onions on the Internet
What a wild ride. Can you give us more information about the boxes? I feel like I need to know more about the boxes.
StopHammoTime··on Why Turning on HTTP/2 Was a Mistake
Great article on approaching massive technical change. Honestly, I think a lot of people general think that most things are just a "switch flip". Even something has implementing SSL on internal apps can cause a big change, let alone the underlying protocol for managing your requests.

Thanks for this, because honestly I hadn't thought about the implications myself and it'd be good not to accidentally walk into this problem.

StopHammoTime··on Amazon Quits China Market
Amazon's model has been a "central place for everything". Culturally, China seems to be more open to having ten million places to get their specific things they need. Having a central online store is not a big deal for them.
StopHammoTime··on PySnooper: Never use print for debugging again
