StockHuman··on Godot Arrives in the Epic Games Store
Oh how I wish “Godot as a Library” was a thing in the same way that Unity may be embedded into another project. Dealing with Unity as our AR runtime has not been great.
StockHuman··on How to design a sailing ship for the 21st century? (2021)
Somewhat unrelated, but I adore their ‘solar’ subdomain mirror that runs on solar power alone. It’s fun to see compelling commitment to the ethics espoused by the articles in the very site itself.
StockHuman··on Apk.sh is a Bash script that makes reverse engineering Android apps easier
I switched to iPhone this summer for that very reason, after maybe a decade on Android.

Coming from the Essential PH-1 which I’d grown tired of maintaining past it’s official support life and looking for something the same size or smaller, I settled on one of the few options on the market that offered both small size and performance: the iPhone 13 mini.

Barring a vastly inferior notification experience, it’s a stellar device. I suppose I wish for something that was both small and well-supported on Android. If the timing was different, I may have gone with the Zenfone, but then again seeing Google send texts as me to their numbers sat wrong with me, so I may have switched systems anyway.

StockHuman··on Base editing: Revolutionary therapy clears girl's incurable cancer
For clarity’s sake,

> “Base editing allows scientists to zoom to a precise part of the genetic code and then alter the molecular structure of just one base, converting it into another and changing the genetic instructions.”

can be reduced to “gene editing.”

StockHuman··on App Store on iOS 14.6 sends every tap you make in the app to Apple
That does not do what you think it does: that’s the button to disconnect from currently connected devices, not to turn off radios. Similarly, the airplane mode button above it will maintain Bluetooth.
StockHuman··on The super-rich ‘preppers’ planning to save themselves
I, for one, will set about hunting the rich in their little bunkers for loot and sport.
StockHuman··on American cities need to grow up, and let housing be built
Moderation seems like a long-lost concept in this space; mid-rise with mixed use, as most cities around the world implement, is perfectly fine, but must be discarded because of zoning for single families at one extreme and skyscrapers at the other with no in between.
StockHuman··on Ask HN: Are there any good poverty simulator games?
"Diary of a spaceport janitor" may not be a poverty sim, and looks from the color choices alone far from one, but it does capture a certain mood; a common feeling produced by the 'poverty wage in a bustling hub of wealth' life.

Being a game, it's also an interesting take on exploring NPCs as a subject in games in a rather humanizing way, rarely do games treat them as having interior lives at all, or why far-out space fantasy still reproduces menial labor of our day without question.

StockHuman··on Epic is asking a court to stop Google from yanking Bandcamp off the Play Store
This very story seems to clarify why they had recently purchased it. Though, of course, perhaps Epic just wanted to get into the music business.
StockHuman··on Unreal vs. Unity Opinion
I wish "Unreal as a Library" existed in the same way it does with Unity; as we use the runtime to ship the cross platform AR component of a react native app.
StockHuman··on Speed camera app developers face abuse from UK drivers
Not necessarily: gendarmerie are common throughout the world. Not that it matters, the power to arrest, use legitimate force, even 'kill and get away with it' distinguishes them from common citizens already.
StockHuman··on The case for induction cooking
Suggesting Smeg to someone concerned with quality undermines your point.
StockHuman··on Facebook, Google other tech firms must verify identities under proposed UK law
Verified, authentic, checkmarked and vetted people still post false, misleading, or otherwise deliberate propaganda all the time. Truth claims from popular users fuel the fire of public opinion, whichever way the wind may blow.

Dare I say I don't think insistence on authentic identity will improve things.

StockHuman··on NYC Mayor demands CEOs end work from home as economy struggles
With fewer people to police, perhaps it's time the city consider sizing down their gargantuan PD. Eleven billion dollars does seem a little much, no?
StockHuman··on New York is using cameras with microphones to ticket loud cars
I live on a little sidestreet next to a highway. The highway is raised (due to being on a steep hill directly behind our place) and has noise barriers installed.

By and large, highway traffic is a low, background static, somewhat like the ebb and flow of a more mechanical wind.

But, because our sidestreet skips a single traffic light on a parallel street, mororbikes live roaring through it, easily louder that anything from the literal highway. At this point, I'd support a ban on motorbikes over 80db.

StockHuman··on The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Can Crack Your iPhone
Does having one's phone compromised by Cellebrite et al. look like anything at all to the end user?
StockHuman··on 54% of adults in the United States have prose literacy below the 6th-grade level
That's indeed motivated reasoning; insulting people closes them off to your ideas. In the context of the internet, where there's no pre-existing relationship of respect towards you, no one being insulted is inclined to pay attention regardless of your truth claims.
StockHuman··on How the KGB Caught America's 'Volkswagen Spy'
Radio Free Asia/Europe is the US equivalent of China's CGTN; state-backed propaganda flimsily dressed up as regular journalism.
StockHuman··on Wish HN: Happy Holidays
I've replaced Google Now with a HN app at the home button thing. All a tap away. :)
StockHuman··on Alternative privacy-respecting front ends for popular services
That's a strange question, I have no private data about current of future lawbreaking.

We know they're keen to lobby and litigate their way out of laws, and pay paltry fines when they fail to do so, but I cannot predict the next instance beyond enumerating any currently ongoing cases.

StockHuman··on Alternative privacy-respecting front ends for popular services
That's an excellent point, and I agree - not just here, but in practice as well - I go out of my way to respect the GPL and similar licenses for my own work and others'.

My respect of copyleft does not come from a want to adhere to legal terms, but instead an appreciation for what those terms hope to achieve more broadly, and the positive impact they have on society. As I described in another comment, I do not owe FAANG respect or legal cooperation it doesn't reciprocate.

Of course, if you feel like it's your duty to run the web without adblockers, I understand that, and more power to you.

StockHuman··on Alternative privacy-respecting front ends for popular services
> Ironically, using these services without paying or submitting to trackings or ads and these companies not paying taxes both violate the principal of “not paying your share”

That is my point, yes; we are already past that point of paying one's fair share as a legitimate concern. I don't owe such a consideration for fairness to an entity that doesn't honour the same to me.

StockHuman··on Alternative privacy-respecting front ends for popular services
I don't think it's fair these sites editorialize content but avoid the repercussions of not editorializing away human trafficking rings (for example), or how they dodge billions in taxes around the world.

If a paid tier offered no ads, tracking or similar anti-features, you'd have a point. Since even paid offerings can't give up profiling and data sharing, it's perfectly fair to get that experience from the free data they choose to serve instead of a 402 payment required.

StockHuman··on Google Drive may restrict files identified as violating ToS
That's silly; voluntary scans aren't voluntary if they're to work, and no scans is always an option. Human decisions to do things one way or another have never been set in stone.
StockHuman··on I live in a zero-Covid world
I wonder what China's exit strategy is, given they've committed themselves to lower-efficacy vaccines and must now be permanently on guard for infections.
