I mod down every post I don't agree with because I am too intellectually challenged to forward an opposing argument. I only ever come here to have my own prejudices confirmed.

Stierlitz··on A Few Words About the Telex (2017)
"When the telex was sent, once the connection was made, the paper tape was played back to the receiving telex. In this way the message would not be hindered by slow typing with mistakes."

The purpose of using paper tape was to keep both machines in synchronization, something difficult to achieve using a human typist.

Stierlitz··on Open Letter from Laura Poitras
@kevin_thibedeau: "She signed a document agreeing to keep secrets. That only requires modest reading skills."

Perhaps, the leak and the subsequent outing was part of a deep-state plot to legitimize the assertion that Russia manipulated the 2016 United States election to get their man elected President.

I highly suspect that whole story, 'Reality Winner' was outed by some yellow dots in the printout.
Stierlitz··on 1028 Words on Free Software
"Things were this way because of Richard Stallman – but I view his influence on these things as negative rather than positive. He was a cause that forced these outcomes, rather than being supportive of the desires and needs of others. Rather than indulge in gossip or stories, I would like to jump to the idea that he was supposed to have been deplatformed in October 2019."

"In resigning from his position as president of the FSF, he certainly lost some of his ability to reach audiences. However, Richard still gives talks. The FSF continues to use his image and rhetoric in their own messaging and materials. They gave him time to speak at their annual conference in 2020. He maintains leadership in the GNU project and otherwise within the FSF sphere. The people who empowered him for so many years are still in charge."

"Richard, and the continued respect and space he is given, is not the only problem. It represents a bigger problem. Sexism and racism (among others) run rampant in the community. This happens because of bad actors and, more significantly, by the complacency of organizations, projects, and individuals afraid of losing contributors, respect, or funding."

"In a sector that has so much money and so many resources, women are still being paid less than men; we deny people opportunities to learn and grow in the name of immediate results; people who aren’t men, who aren’t white, are abused and harassed; people are mentally and emotionally taken advantage of, and we are coerced into burn out and giving up our lives for these companies and projects and we are paid for tolerating all of this by being told we’re doing a good job or making a difference."

To keep people stuck on Windows, the Microsoft mantra used to be, our stuff works better with our stuff. Since most OS functionality is moving to the msCloud. Regardless of the OS, you'll be paying the yearly software rent to Microsoft.

Stierlitz··on Dev-C++ Is a Low Memory Windows Native C++ IDE Built in Delphi
Any particular reason why these two posts were rendered dead?

-------

H_Pylori 1 hour ago [dead] [–]

Back in the day, Dev-C++ was the ideal IDE for the C/C++ beginner. Simple, easy to use and very light in term of resources. I remember being able to run Dev-C++ on a 166Mhz Pentium I with 32Mb of RAM (which was hopelessly obsolete even by then). You could even install C libraries automatically as DevPaks.

Stierlitz··on GOL Airlines to Resume 737 Max Flights on Wednesday
Will the pilot be able to override MCAS at take-off or landing?

“Summary of the FAA’s Review of the Boeing 737 MAX”

https://www.faa.gov/foia/electronic_reading_room/boeing_read...

“The 737 MAX was designed to handle and feel the same to the pilot as the 737 NG. Without the MCAS function, in some small areas of the flight envelope — such as approaching a stall and during higher g-force maneuvering — the new engines contribute to the control column feeling lighter in the 737 MAX than the regulations allow.”

The Flight envelope is unstable without MCAS.

“MCAS provides signals to move the horizontal stabilizer at elevated angles of attack to compensate for the aerodynamic effects of the 737 MAX’s larger and more forward-located engines, resulting in the required column feel to the pilot.”

The plane pitches nose-up under high acceleration.

Stierlitz··on The Grenfell Tower inquiry is uncovering a major corporate scandal
You just contradicted by main point. It was precisely aesthetics that Grenfell Tower was covered in inflammable tiles. Inflammable tiles being used instead of the more expensive ones, to make more money for the commercial companies.

Who previously got the laws diluted to allow the use of inflammable tiles on the outsides of high-rise buildings. They got round the law, by sandwiching the inflammable material between two sheets of aluminum and then getting the sandwich certified as fire retardant.

"Grenfell cladding approved by residents was swapped for cheaper version"

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/jun/30/grenfell-cla...

Stierlitz··on The Grenfell Tower inquiry is uncovering a major corporate scandal
> There's significant political interest in finding a corporate scandal here ..

The scandal being safety standards being diluted by previous governments and the use of inflammable material in the tiles. The tiles being installed to beautify the tower. So as the tower would not spoil the view of the more expensive nearby towers.

Stierlitz··on Boeing's upgraded 737 Max completes first flight with media onboard
@throwaway201103: “You're mostly right, but it wasn't just to make it handle like the previous versions, it was to satisfy FAA certification rules on how it handled.”

NO, no, no it isn't .. doesn't matter how many different ways you re-arrange the word salad. MCAS is a software kludge to compensate for an unstable airframe
