Steve16384··on The top secret URSALA, RAQUEL, and FARRAH satellites (2025)
> it's clearly pointless

That depends what the aim of the war is. Is it to win, or just a distraction?

Steve16384··on US sanctions force The Netherlands off Microsoft and toward alternative NixOS
You're probably right. The wars have served their purpose, i.e. distract voters from domestic issues. Who in power cares if they win or lose if they're still in power?
Steve16384··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
What would qualify as having won? Every Palestinian dead?
Steve16384··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
I'm not a fan of Morrisons, but they do have a great range of booze.
Steve16384··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
Why wouldn't they? There's been very little repercussions for anyone so far. Apart from the Netherlands bracing itself for sanctions from America because the ICC dared to suggest someone might have done something wrong.
Steve16384··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
Or any of the other million or so sci-fi stories that predicted this might happen.
Steve16384··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
The real advantage of AI is the fact it can be blamed, absolving any humans of responsibility or repercussions.
Steve16384··on Netherlands bracing for potentially devastating US sanctions against the ICC
I think it's something to do with them issueing an arrest warrant in November 2024 for Netanyahu for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity as part of the ICC investigation in Palestine.
Steve16384··on A warning about 'model welfare'
Take your pick from the millions of options already turned into films and books.
Steve16384··on The Google Play app review process now regularly takes longer than a week
> but can be overwhelming

That's an understatement and a half. It's massively over engineered and complicated, especially when compared with (say) the dashboard on Itch.

Steve16384··on Australia 'on the same page' as Canada as it seeks deeper EU alliance
I guess that's what the EU is trying to be.
Steve16384··on US confirms for first time it has deployed space weapons
I feel safer already. What's the worst that could happen? I'm sure no-one will put an AI anywhere near it.
Steve16384··on Spaceships (Reverse Asteroid)
I created a reverse Space Invaders a few months ago, but I struggled to get it to be a fun game as you just move left and right avoiding the players bullets. (I'd post a gif, but it looks exactly like Space Invaders to watch).
Steve16384··on I think I hate the internet
What's to stop this nu-web going the same way?
Steve16384··on Among European Companies That Use a CDN, Nearly 9 in 10 Use Cloudflare
How did you extrapolate that leap of logic? Maybe we suck at business.
Steve16384··on Switzerland's Federal Government Is Replacing Microsoft on 3k Computers
You're going to have that problem with any kind of change.
Steve16384··on Porting my 1993 Amiga game to Godot, with an LLM reading the 68000 assembly
Why pointless?
Steve16384··on Porting my 1993 Amiga game to Godot, with an LLM reading the 68000 assembly
This is amazing. How long did that process take? Was it almost just a case of giving Claude the binary files and then prompting "please recreate this in Godot"?
Steve16384··on Porting my 1993 Amiga game to Godot, with an LLM reading the 68000 assembly
This is amazing. I'm trying to get a handle on how you're doing this, but I can't seem to find anything specific. e.g., is it a case of prompting "Please recreate Populous for the web"?
Steve16384··on Lake Ontario ("Lake America")
He's doing this as well as all the wars.
Steve16384··on Air Conditioning Is Not a Luxury, It Is a Necessity
I'm not sure what the point of this article is, apart from fearmongering about a new boogie man.
Steve16384··on CEO fired developers to make room for AI. Developers create open source AI CEO
I'm surprised this hsn't happened sooner. Surely making decisions as a CEO would be easier for an AI then complex software development.
Steve16384··on Woman stranded in Spain after UK's eVisa system mistakes her for twin sister
Would it make any difference? Fujitsu wrote software so buggy that innocent people got fined and put in prison. They still get contracts even today.
Steve16384··on How do I permanently disable random Google Photos popup to backup photos? (2024)
This is another argument that we need more phone OS options, not just Android and iPhone. (Graphene isn't really a proper option yet).
Steve16384··on Thanks to social media, canned sardines are a scarcity on the supermarket shelf
Back in the day, adverts used to be obviously just adverts. Nowadays it's very difficult to determine what actually is an advert/influencer, or someone with some genuine facts.
Steve16384··on The UK's war on anonymity has come to America
Why are you afraid of arrest and jail time if it's only privacy we're talking about?
Steve16384··on The UK's war on anonymity has come to America
The government employ a lot of private companies to do their dirty work.
Steve16384··on The UK's war on anonymity has come to America
> “We will be a minority in our homeland by 2066” is accurate

Accurate as in someone said it? Centuries ago, people were worried that if the number of horses increased at the current rate, we would be waist-deep in horse manure.

And you admit yourself that the "precise number is contentious".

Steve16384··on The UK's war on anonymity has come to America
Your framing of the stories is interesting: * "UK arrests were also for stickers" - surely there must be a point where we stop someone putting racists stickers everywhere. * "merely possessing materials designed to Stirring up racial hatred" - Presumably you're okay with someone stirring up racial hatred? * "Viewing "far-right propaganda" carries a 15 year jail sentence:" - No it doesn't, that's just an MP trying to get votes. * ""young white girls are being raped by these grooming gangs" ". Where does it say anything about a jail term?
Steve16384··on Xbox goes down. You can't play games you own on disc
As I said, things like DRM or the game phoning home to check it was authorised etc... Equally so, games that I've downloaded from the internet (e.g. Itch) are fully playable offline. The "physical disc" argument is irrelevant.
