Steve16384··on Discord will require a face scan or ID for full access next month
Somehow I can't see Facebook volunatarily scaling down, and even if they did, it would leave a gap for a "global" network to take its place.
Steve16384··on Douglas Adams on the English–American cultural divide over "heroes"
Bill Bailey in Part Troll said "I'm British and thus crave disappointment."
Steve16384··on UK consulting on bringing in social media ban for under 16s
If it's for a positive outcome, yes.
Steve16384··on Danish Armed Forces expand their presence and continue exercises in Greenland
A nuclear deterrent is still a deterrent, no matter how small. No country (hopefully) wants to risk any kind of nuclear war. Ukraine would never have been invaded if it still had its nukes.
Steve16384··on Danish Armed Forces expand their presence and continue exercises in Greenland
Out of curiosity, what do you think they should have done?
Steve16384··on Photos capture the breathtaking scale of China's wind and solar buildout
Not as depressing as if it was coal power stations and coalmines blighting the landscape.
Steve16384··on UK Officials could face US entry ban over Twitter policy
So no country should ever ban someone from entering.... unless they're an immigrant of course!
Steve16384··on Italian Competition Authority Fines Apple $115M for Abusing Dominant Position
So, like being a citizen then?
Steve16384··on Most parked domains now serving malicious content
You gotta name the domain!
Steve16384··on Are Apple gift cards safe to redeem?
The same with Youtube. Broken an unknown rule on one of your vids? Your whole account and all the videos are deleted instantly.
Steve16384··on 'Ghost jobs' are on the rise – and so are calls to ban them
> Scummy behaviour. But I guess they got away with it.

How could they not get away with it? That's the problem.

Steve16384··on Paramount launches hostile bid for Warner Bros
There's a lot of people making this stuff up on the internet then.
Steve16384··on Microsoft increases Office 365 and Microsoft 365 license prices
I don't think it needs one specific alternative; if the protocols they shared were all open and useable, small pieces could be replaced slowly over time.
Steve16384··on Time to start de-Appling
Apple do everything in their power to prevent competition: forcing Safari, forcing payments to go through Apple so they can take their cut etc...
Steve16384··on OpenAI may not use lyrics without license, German court rules
> May a person read lyrics and tell it to someone when asked, and the court's ruling basically says no, this may not happen, which makes little sense.

I think the difference here is that your example is what a search engine might do, whereas AI is taking the lyrics, using them to create new lyrics, and then passing them off as its own.

Steve16384··on TurboTax’s 20-year fight to stop Americans from filing taxes for free (2019)
But where is the company getting the refund from?
Steve16384··on Amazon has mostly sat out the AI talent war
It's never quite that straightforward, or perceived as that straightforward. That's why most people just renew their insurance as it's easier than messing about changing and worrying if it will be any better. And how easy is it to transfer emails to another provider?
Steve16384··on End well, this won't: UK commissioner suggests govt stops kids from using VPNs
I second ProtonVPN. I assume being Android it would mean side-loading and lots of faff, but you just download it from Play and you're away. You don't even need to create a login.
Steve16384··on Google admits anti-competitive conduct involving Google Search in Australia
> How is it fair? I would think if two parties commit the same crime they should be charged the same.

I think the reasoning as that when Google does it, it affects far more people than if (say) I sold a single phone with only my own apps pre-installed. Should I be fined $55 million?

Steve16384··on How AI conquered the US economy: A visual FAQ
> What about the data?

What, you want them to pay for all the copyrighted data they consume and regurgitate? They can't afford that!

Steve16384··on How AI conquered the US economy: A visual FAQ
Ironically, this is currently second in HN: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=44836219 ("Food, housing, & health care costs are a source of major stress for many people")
Steve16384··on Food, housing, & health care costs are a source of major stress for many people
Exactly the things that a well meaning society should provide to its citizens. What's the point of "progress" if we can't provide the basics to the majority?

Steve16384··on Tour de France confronts a new threat: Are cyclists using tiny motors?

Paywalled. Might be better: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/parents-arre...

It sounds like there was harrasment involved, but it is scant on details.
