Steve16384··on Xbox goes down. You can't play games you own on disc
As I said, things like DRM or the game phoning home to check it was authorised etc... Equally so, games that I've downloaded from the internet (e.g. Itch) are fully playable offline. The "physical disc" argument is irrelevant.
Steve16384··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
Before AI, the way people were gaming Google was by filling their pages with pages of verbose fluff (have you ever tried googling how to make a specific cocktail?). Now the AI just makes it easier to generate that fluff.
Steve16384··on Let's all meet up in the Y2K
Yeah, any photos from the 60's to the 90's and you can pretty easily tell which decade it is. Maybe it's because we all went online, and so are less bothered about our physical style and more about our online persona where most of our interaction now takes place.
Steve16384··on Xbox goes down. You can't play games you own on disc
I don't understand why anyone thinks that just because they own the disc, they will always be able to play it. It's still full of DRM!
Steve16384··on What Even Are Microservices?
They sound great in theory, but when you've got Microservices A to Z and something isn't right, you've got 26 log files to go through just to start.

It redirects me fine.
Steve16384··on Teen hackers who live streamed cyber-attack on TfL jailed
Why on earth would the BBC want or care for people to believe that? Are they in the pay of the anti-autism league? We're through the looking glass people!
Steve16384··on British Steel taken into public ownership to protect 'vital' UK supply
Have you tried BritBox? It seems to show Doctor Who, but ironically, being in the UK I'm unable to access their site to see specific details.
Steve16384··on Your 'app' could have been a webpage (so I fixed it for you)
Couldn't agree more. I've only published on Google Play, but the number of hoops Google makes you jump through (and keeps making you jump through if you want to keep your app in the store) is a full-time job in itself. New permission requirements, needing to self-decalre that your app does/doesn't do this or that, forcing you to reveal your personal details. The list goes on.
Steve16384··on Federal agents track down woman, demand she remove Instagram post about ICE
If someone put my name and address on the internet and then falsely claimed I'd committed some henious crime against children (and maybe added a fake AI image) I'd certainly want the police to do something.
Steve16384··on Federal agents track down woman, demand she remove Instagram post about ICE
Who's talking about criticising the government? If someone put my name and address on the internet and then falsely claimed I'd committed some henious crime against children (and maybe added a fake AI image) I'd certainly want the police to do something.
Steve16384··on Jolla Phone (October 2026)
It's almost like a "ship of Theseus" problem. If something arrived in Finland for assembly that could theoretically be disassembled, does the final product count as being assembled in Finland? What even counts as "assembling"?
Steve16384··on Federal agents track down woman, demand she remove Instagram post about ICE
Which of the 12K arrests do you not agree with? Or are you saying people should be free to write whatever they want on social media with no repercussions?

That depends. It might be going above-and-beyond your job.

> An electrician doing an inspection and noticing and fixing big electrical issues in the installation, would be appreciated, even if the accidents didn't happen.

Not if nobody knew he'd fixed it.

Steve16384··on Houses are for living, not for speculation
Several UK councils now charge double council tax (the monthly tax you pay for having a house) on second homes, exemptions notwithstanding.

> If retirement age was say 80 instead of 60, there would be 25% fewer jobs to go around.

By that logic, when the population was 25% less than it is now (~1980s), there was a job for everyone.

Steve16384··on AI didn't delete your database, you did
It's taking "computer says no" to the next level. Computers do exactly what they're told, but who told them? The person entering data? The original programmer or designer of the system? The author of whatever language text was used to feed the ai? Even before AI, it was very difficult to determine who is accountable, and now it's even more obfuscated.
Steve16384··on The More Young People Use AI, the More They Hate It
Because lots of people, businesses and governments don't want to.
