Sr_developer··on The Programmer's Brain
I was to comment the same the other day , but the post was about some book the author was promoting so I didnt want to be a party popper but the book was totally mediocre.

It seems to me the inevitable destiny of all "tech" press, start with strong titles and devolve into crap, or to be fairer a crap-shoot.

So now you have:

ALWAYS HAVE BEEN "CRAP" = Packt and Apress

STARTED OK,GOOD NOW MOSTLY CRAP = Pragmatic, Manning, No Starch

STILL OK,GOOD = O'Reilly, CUP

Sr_developer··on The perils of PR
It is The Economist, par for the course.
Sr_developer··on GitHub Copilot is not infringing copyright
Do you think this Copilot is some sort of advanced AGI who just became a genius programmer? Almost every piece of code that it "generates" you will find it almost verbatim in one or several public repos.
Sr_developer··on GitHub Copilot is not infringing copyright
This is a supposedly progressive politician, young, in an advanced country, her personal platform runs almost entirely on copyright issues and yet she gets almost everything wrong, what can you expect from your usual dinosaurs?
Sr_developer··on PID Controller for controlling the number of servers in a data-center
Have you practiced control theory in an actual process plant? PID is not simple to tune it at all, well PI, nobody uses the derivative part. Countless studies published in the industry show that up to 30% of the PID control loops in operation are set to MANUAL by the operators and from the rest more than half have wrong parameters.Even then +90% of the controllers are PID, because despite all their problems they work better than the more sophisticated alternatives, they are more reliable, maintainable and cheaper to license.

> PID will basically have you experience either large overshoots (which you will experience as overcorrecting to changes in demand) or slow adaptation to changes.

Such a blanket statement is meaningless without a description of the system you are controlling, those kind of overshoot can be attributed to wrong parameters, to badly sized elements of control or even to bad measuring devices, the PID algorithm has zero to do with those cases.

> I have implemented a controller for espresso machine boiler water temperature. Replacing PID with moving horizon estimator allowed me to cut time from startup until stable temperature by at least half and eliminate any measurable over or undershoots.

Did you try a "bang-bang" controller,I would no be surprised if you'd get the same results with 1% of the complexity.

Sr_developer··on Is Alexandra Elbakyan in real trouble this time?
These are my predictions:

1. She will be destroyed, one way or the other. Since she is eastern European the possibilities are vastless: Russian asset/ Spy/ Dangerous Hacker/ Covert Operation/ Putin enabler, etc, etc

2. Expect hundreds of "insightful" comments on here how she was actually wrong because X, Y, Z, the same points produced by mainstream media and the establishment politicians.

3. She will be shunned, forgotten and even jailed if she puts a foot in a "wrong" country, and by that I mean 80% of earth,

Sr_developer··on Media blackout after key witness against Assange admits lying
I was being sarcastic (it dismays me a little to have to explain it). I agree with you, I was only parodying the majority position on this site any time someone they dont like is suppressed.
Sr_developer··on Amazon announce two new leadership principles
That's fine and dandy but I know how much I'll earn this month ,not this nebulous concept of "we dont have a salary policy here"
Sr_developer··on Media blackout after key witness against Assange admits lying
This OK, if you dont like it go and create your own newspaper, news agency or media conglomerate. This is the world we live in right now.
Sr_developer··on Acer disables BIOS for laptops sold through Amazon? (2020)
> And generally, the thick gaming laptops tend to be easy to work with.

I confirm, I havent bought one yet, but the other day I saw this laptop:

https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-IPS-Type-i5-10300H-Keyboard-FX70...

17 inches, a 144hz screen,GTX 1650, 512 GB SSD and space for 2 more!. You can add a 4 TB HD, a 1GB SSD, and change the RAM to 32 GB and get a monster machine for about 1200 USD.

With a Clevo (and other similar brands) you can have even more customization options, although I expect them to be more expensive.

Sr_developer··on How to Work Hard
You cannot bring a variety-show video and be expected to be taken seriously. Messi is not sloth, but he has never ever distinguished himself for being a training freak like Ronaldo, Zanetti,Batistuta, etc, if anything when younger (18-23) he was very undisciplined in some aspects of his training, for example he had a crappy diet and was kinda weak and injury prone.
Sr_developer··on Amazon announce two new leadership principles
If you think Netflix is the first company to do this either you are very young and/or very inexperienced. Wharton was founded in the 19th century and Harvard has been granting MBAs since 1908. Corporate-Speak followed not much later.
Sr_developer··on Amazon announce two new leadership principles
LOL!!!!!

> In procedural work, the best are 2x better than the average. In creative work, the best are 10x better than the average, so huge premium on creating effective teams of the best

Pulled from their asses

> Great Workplace is Stunning Colleagues

Well, NO. Having smart and competent colleagues is for sure desirable but it is just one trait (Maybe not the most important one)

> Netflix Vacation Policy and Tracking “there is no policy or tracking”

This is a huge huge red-flag.One of the reasons (among many) is that people tend to overestimate their contribution to team and underestimate their peers' .So when Susy takes 2 weeks off (deservedly according to her) you get pissed because you think you have done 2X as much as her and you only took one week off. And this is the tamest of the complications.Vacations should be like salaries, they need to be spelled out very clearly and not subject to ambiguous "rules".

> Highly‐Aligned Loosely‐Coupled teamwork effectiveness is dependent on high performance people and good context. Goal is to be Big and Fast and Flexible.

Thank God they were free of corporate mumbo-jumbo.

Most of the slides are in a similar vein. They want to justify culling people indiscriminately (and they are withing their rights) but they are not being cool, innovative or different because of that. They are just another company which wants to extract as much value from their employees as possible while minimizing the cost.

Sr_developer··on Link rot and content drift are endemic to the web
> Maybe the reason it feels impossible to stem the tide of link rot is that it's takes tremendous energy to constantly increase the entropy of a system.

I suppose you meant "decrease"

Sr_developer··on How to Work Hard
According to him if your partner divorces you it is always a bad decision of yours. If people betrays you it is a bad decision if you get sick it is a bad decision, if you live in Haiti earning 300 USD/month it is fine because COL is lower. Living in hindsight-land, but it is OK since he grew up in "poverty". Totally absent of any sense of perspective of what a normal human life consists of, typical of an upper-middle class able, white, male in IT.
Sr_developer··on GitHub Copilot
Since most of the code written anywhere is crap (the tool was trained with "millions" of lines of code) I suspect it will repeat all the same anti-patterns,bad-structured,ill-thought code which fills Github.
Sr_developer··on How to Work Hard
> It was similar with Lionel Messi. He had great natural ability, but when his youth coaches talk about him, what they remember is not his talent but his dedication and his desire to win.

This is not true, everyone who knows even just a little bit about football (I suppose not many people here) would know Messi was the preternatural talent (not like he has not worked hard, but his talent is by far his biggest asset), it is C Ronaldo in any case who is a totally dedicated person to training.

You dont do this at 8-10 because you are a "hard-worker", you do it because you won the genetic lottery:

As always, the Gell-Mann amnesia effect in full effect.

Sr_developer··on Show HN: Find Your Hacker News Doppelgänger
As Cardinal Richelieu apocryphally said"If you give me six lines written by the hand of the most honest of men, I will find something in them which will hang him."

I dont doubt you can present a similar set of "warnings" for any undesirable who refuse to toe the corporate line you are ordered and paid to maintain. All those rules are ambiguous, opaque, arbitrary and subjectively interpreted and enforced, but you know that.

The most ironic thing is that the measure you take with people who refuse to follow you faux-polite tone is censorship and virtual obliteration, something 1000 times worse. Most of the people I got personal (in argument) here were being racist/clasist/homophobic/ethnocentric but since they can shield themselves behind rhetorical what ifs and sing paeans to the geniuses of YC they have carte-blanche.

Give me a million times better the dysfunctional governments we all have before techno-fascists like you and your bosses, censoring anyone who does not suck up to them.

You banned me 2 days after the comment for saying that YC can be as or more exploitative than China's deals with African countries and I said that the parent defending YC but condemning China was acting on a base of racism and ethnocentrism. You can see how he brought a bunch of low-quality links I refuted them and you came 2 days later(I just realized that now) and banned me.

Oh well, I suppose you will be ban me again. BB cannot be criticized.

Sr_developer··on Ask HN: What huge mistake did you make early in your career?
Staying too long in my first job

Not pushing for promotions/more responsibilities

Getting attached to my original team.

Thinking other people had my career as their concerns

Tolerating some bosses disrespect

Attaching my visa to my job <- Modern slavery

Better access to funding, networking, bigger talent pool, access to some sort of "water-cooling" conversations if you are the social type who loves to mingle. But it is true that the world is getting smaller. Even as an employee, for many places getting a 50% of what you'd earn in the US without having to move there could be worthwhile.

As a developer from a run-of-the-mill Latin-Country (No special job agreements a la Mexico/Chile) what would be my best chance to get a visa-sponsored job? Work as a local in my country and bid my time for a L1 opportunity? Anything else without resorting to the H1B grind-mill?

Well, tbh you kinda of deserved it. Although uncle Bob's methodology can be highly suspect and not worth 1% of its hype the article you linked (https://techexplained.substack.com/p/tech-bullshit-explained...) was not a technical criticism , it was something which at best seems written by a tumblerina.

Yep, and the other 15% is not that different. The other day a person here showed a site he created where he aggregates all the "good" articles that dont get any traction here ( https://bengtan.com/interesting-things/) . The existence of that site combined with the multiple first-page appearance of articles like this one or even ones of lesser quality is a proof that we , the readership of this site, are not that as smart or as sophisticated as we would like it to be.

Sr_developer··on Facebook will start putting ads in Oculus Quest apps
How wonderful! It is so inspiring to see all the incredible uses of technology coming out from the Mecca of human creativity and accomplishment.
Sr_developer··on Facebook will start putting ads in Oculus Quest apps
At this moment of the VR craze/wave/hype if you buy an Oculus and you get burned by Facebook you kinda deserve it. They have demonstrated time and time again how shitty they are.
