Splines··on Indirection Is Not Abstraction
Magic source is the worst. At the very least if you have something that is autogenerated from another file the name of the thing in that other file should be the same name that is used to do something with it.

Nothing worse than breaking into the debugger and seeing a "ThingAdjectiveVerb" and you need to actually look for "ThingAdjective" and look at the "VerbFoo" entry under it.

Splines··on Facebook exodus: Nearly half of young users have deleted the app
I don't know why this got downvoted, while the question "does FB listen in on you" may not have a definitive answer, the answer to the question "does FB messenger look at your conversation text" is "yes": http://time.com/money/5227844/facebook-reviews-private-messa...

Does it use your private messages for advertising? It seems like "no" for now, but nothing is stopping them.

> Just like there is no turning back for gaming. F2P elements in nearly everything including paid games!

There are plenty of paid games that do not include any kind of microtransaction. I'd consider the paid-games ecosystem to be surprisingly healthy these days. But to be fair, it's all console/PC. Mobile games are likely to remain a F2P wasteland.

Splines··on Night Sight for Pixel phones
> actually made a pretty popular computational photography app for Android.

Gallus looks interesting, I haven't heard about it before. Any thoughts on when you're bringing it back?

Splines··on Night Sight for Pixel phones
I think the idea is that you could capture a better photo with more detail up front then post-process afterwards to how you want it to look. Although I get what you're saying, some of the night photos looked great on the default camera.

Splines··on Business card-sized Japanese phone bucks the giant-phone trend
That looks really interesting, but: 1.) It's Verizon only, 2.) It needs to be "paired" with an existing line, and 3.) It's $350.

Fix (1) and (2), maybe (3) and then we're talking.

Splines··on Android Creator’s Startup Essential Products Cuts About 30% of Staff
> Are you saying you think the size of the display is a primary cost center for phones, so small screen phones would have a substantially cheaper bill of materials?

Not exactly. The way this phone is being marketed is very strange - this phone is designed as an "add-on phone", it can only be used as an add-on to an existing line.

As a standalone phone $350 isn't too bad, but asking people to pay $350 in addition to whatever they want to pay for their "main" phone is a little much.

They're in Apple Watch territory with this pricing and I don't think they have the ecosystem to demand that kind of price.

Which is cool until you find out that it's $350.
Splines··on Apple Launches Portal for U.S. Users to Download Their Data
For certain things sorting by time is the easiest way to test for authenticity. It doesn't always work but it's usually the easiest way. This feels like a problem that Google should be able to solve, with their web crawler and video/photo recognition capabilities.
Splines··on Ask HN: What discontinued company/product do you wish was still around?
Yes! Their charts/graphs were amazing to play with.

Using it today feels like a "Show HN" MVP version of their full product.

Splines··on New Google Pixel 3, Pixel Slate, and Home Hub
I find it really annoying that phones need so much hand holding from OEMs to keep up to date. Imagine the backlash if a Windows OEM said that: a.) you could only get OS updates from them, and b.) you'd only get 2 years of updates.
Splines··on New Google Pixel 3, Pixel Slate, and Home Hub
Can you access google photos through other apps on an Android phone? On mine all I can see are my local photos, even in something like Hangouts.
Splines··on Microsoft suspends Windows 10 update, citing data loss reports
https://www.quora.com/How-do-you-shut-down-a-Windows-10-comp...

So when Windows says you have an update available, the design is that it did all the work that is possible and all that's left is (in theory) the copy bit that's left.

My completely ill-informed guess is that there are exceptions to this rule by teams that aren't fully aware of how updates work under the hood and as a result upgrading takes longer than it really should. As time goes by those teams get hit with a stick and they fix things, but the upgrade team probably plays a fair bit of wack-a-mole.

Splines··on What Happens When a Drone Hits an Airplane Wing? [video]
I do not have a fluid dynamics background, but my hunch is that at the speeds involved, and the fact that there is a column of air from the cannon already surrounding the projectile, that this makes this simulation close enough.
Splines··on Voice Phishing Scams Are Getting More Clever
iOS/Android could do something like this. You register your number with Apple/Google and link your account with them. When you call someone you set a field on your account that you're calling someone. When the person who you're dialing gets rung, their dialer can look up Apple/Google and see if that number was indeed calling them, and add a "verified" checkmark to the call.

This leads down a privacy/metadata rabbit hole, but there are probably ways to make this a lot better. In any case, the phone OS can do some out-of-band signaling and just avoid dealing with the carriers altogether.

Although if you're doing all that then why not just make a call using voip...

It's similar in concept but the execution is different.

Splines··on Police forcing me to install Jingwang spyware app, how to minimize impact?
And then what do you do when you have the wrong ROM running and you get grabbed by the police with no opportunity to reboot your phone? There are mitigations but getting this right requires a high amount of vigilance.
Splines··on The Rise and Contentious Fork of RSS

You used to be able to do that. The problem (from fb's point of view) as the sibling comment points out is that you'd never visit facebook.com unless you wanted to actually wanted to interact with the content.

Splines··on SETI spots dozens of new mysterious signals emanating from distant galaxy
> Contrarily, eyes have evolved independently in many organisms over a dozen times.

I'd argue that this is because we all have the sun in common. On a planet that orbits a star with a different spectrum or a planet that has a different atmospheric makeup, "vision" might look very different to what we're used to.

iPhone pricing tiers:

- XS $999

- XS Max $1099

Yikes. And that's for the lowest storage available.

Splines··on Apple can delete purchased movies from your library without telling you
> it's trivial to get the .apk from a bought app after it's on your phone

I'd argue that while it might be easy today, that's just an implementation detail. The play store does not advertise anywhere that you can backup APKs for installation later in case an app is pulled from the store. Tomorrow Google could invent a new kind of delivery mechanism that makes this stop working.

Splines··on Dry Water

Splines··on DuckDuckGo Raises $10M
I don't think it's a bad thing either. It gives DDG a very clear signal so that they can improve: "you are not giving me the results I want for these queries". For most other search engines people just switch.
