Spinfusor··on Automattic's board forces CEO Matt Mullenweg into leave of absence
If he has 84% voting share, can't he just fire the board?
Spinfusor··on Goodbye Visa and Mastercard: 130M Europeans switching to sovereign payment
This is one of the reasons I opt for PayPal in the US when I have the choice. I've been in too many breaches. Direct to bank would be better, but I trust PayPal's security more than a random ecommerce website's security.

If it had a backlight, I would have bought one by now.
Spinfusor··on Leaving Google has actively improved my life
I had a mostly bad experience with Kagi, but I have to say I miss the account-level domain blocking.
Spinfusor··on Safe and reliable production changes, and how Rivian recently got this wrong
At this point I would like to be there. Telecom companies don't seem to care about spam calls much.

Acer has a few 3:2 Windows/Chrome laptops
Spinfusor··on Oracle Giving Away 4-Core 24 GB Memory Ampere Instances
Oracle's OpenJDK binaries are GPL; the Oracle JDK has a better license as of a few months ago (v17): https://blogs.oracle.com/cloud-infrastructure/post/introduci...
Spinfusor··on People Keeping BlackBerry Alive
The N9 was only two years behind the Palm Pre!
Spinfusor··on Quibi Is Shutting Down
eBay did well when she was CEO.
Spinfusor··on Performance of modern Java on data-heavy workloads
Not true. You can use the OpenJDK for free until the end of time. If you want ongoing updates beyond six months, there are a bunch of free distributions: Azul Zulu Community (7/8/11/13/14), AdoptOpenJDK (8/11/14), etc.
Spinfusor··on Anti-Cheat Kernel Driver
Tencent owns 100% of Riot; Tim Sweeney is Epic.
Spinfusor··on New Features in Java 14
It's mostly FUD: it's only relevant for the Oracle JDK; it doesn't apply to OpenJDK (or the other open distributions by other orgs).
Spinfusor··on Bazel Release 1.0
Yes: the internal tool is Blaze
Spinfusor··on Microsoft’s Q4 earnings and 2020 expectations
Azure's Java support is not up to par and doesn't seem to get much love, so I'd use AWS or GCP given the choice.
Spinfusor··on On Jony Ive Leaving Apple
iOS 7 was so much better than 6 it's not even funny. I'm so happy the skeuomorphic look was finally killed.
Spinfusor··on Google unveils Stadia cloud gaming service
They didn't talk about monetization. They could presumably sell Stadia games like Steam games (i.e. there's no subscription). They did mention being able to jump into games quickly, but there are plenty of ways to make that work (e.g. giving everyone some free time).
Spinfusor··on New iPad Air and iPad Mini
The Surface Pro has never had any USB-C ports.

Microsoft released a Surface Connect adapter only last year, and it has terrible reviews: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/surface-connect-to-usb-c-a...

The Surface Go, Surface Book 2, and Surface Studio 2 are the only Surface devices with USB-C ports.

Spinfusor··on Autodesk to Acquire PlanGrid (YC W12) to Accelerate Construction Productivity
They’ve done a great job with PlanGrid.

I wonder what role Carol Bartz played in the deal (she’s been on the board for 2.5 years and was Autodesk’s CEO for 14 years).

Spinfusor··on Introducing Surface Book 2
I hope the hinge is much tighter than on the old models (the display shook waaaaay too much).
Spinfusor··on Google could face a $9B EU fine for rigging search results in its favour
What are you suggesting they show first? Most people would argue that Google's translation service is the best of the free/ad-supported options out there.

Even Bing shows Google's translator first (after their own inline version).

Spinfusor··on Gett in advanced talks to buy Juno for $250M as Uber rivals consolidate
Re Grubhub/Seamless (I used to work there):

The sense I got was that they haven't unified the brands yet because they're really afraid of messing up the NYC market. Grubhub merged with Seamless in 2013 because leadership wanted to get into NYC, and Seamless owned/owns NYC. It's a hugely profitable market for the company.

They've toyed with the idea of bringing the brands closer (particularly around the Grubhub rebrand last year), but nothing's happened so far.
