Spectral··on I Quit Social Media for a Year
Here's something interesting I'd like to share (if you don't already know of it): https://news.ycombinator.com/over?points=70

For the past ~2 years I've only been looking at HN through this link. This limits the amount of listings I can see, while at the same time ensuring "higher quality" dopamine rushes. It's worked out for me quite well with giving me what I want to see, while wasting less time sifting through uninteresting stuff. Pretty much like reddit's top vs. hot functionality, just changing my defaults.

Spectral··on The Lonely Work of Moderating Hacker News
A comment like "got any sources for that?" without adding additional context is low effort and inching towards trolling. Another difference is while the parent post of that person's comment it would be nice to include sources, it is about a general topic people can attempt to look for public sources themselves. Your comment you are accusing a forum user (dang) of something and there is no reasonable way to look for sources backing up your opinion/claim.
Spectral··on How I Got my $3500 Camera Kit Stolen on KitSplit
While reading this article I had the same thought, read something similar on HN before. Sounds like nothing's changed on KitSplit. Looks like they found their profit/payment line - continue to screw the 0.01% and leave them in the dark and only pay up the the even smaller % that decide to pursue them in court.
Spectral··on A Solution for Loneliness: Get out and volunteer, research suggests
I'm in the same situation as you were, except just starting out and going for some nice discussions/debates. What's your situation now (assuming you don't attend anymore) and any important learned experiences & lessons you care to pass on?
Spectral··on I found two identical packs of Skittles among 468 packs
The picture he shows of all the Skittles' counts looks like something I would've seen at the local museum. He missed his chance of taking an ultra high resolution photo of it and putting it on display:

Spectral··on AT&T’s “5G E” is slower than Verizon and T-Mobile 4G, study finds
Lol this onion article was posted in '04 and what do you know, Gillette is actually up to 5 blades and 2 strips - "Fusion5"
Spectral··on AT&T’s “5G E” is slower than Verizon and T-Mobile 4G, study finds
Dirtbag AT&T always doing shady stuff like this. Wouldn't be surprised if someone proposed this and execs signed it off as a great idea because the revenue from the additional signups was determined to be greater than the expected fines.
Spectral··on Don’t Get Clever with Login Forms
This list reads like Brad trying to offering semi reasons why XX is bad, but then at the end of each point his real motive comes out which is he's just annoyed his password manager doesn't work smoothly. Some points are valid, but the post just appears very biased.
Spectral··on Google Docs gets an API for task automation
Hmm in this demo the interface looks exactly like Zapier (automation service).. wonder what relationship they have: https://zapier.com
Spectral··on Breaking bad news
You say "Speaking simply, it just doesn’t work."

But from an everyday perspective, it works all the time? In recent light companies like Uber, Riot Games, Equifax, etc. have come under huge criticism but what do they do? They do "accept" responsibility in corporate speak but just make bs promises and stay quiet and wait for the PR shitstorm to calm down. Then to a good extent the people/the public forget about it and move on. Obviously this is a really bad thing, but they know it's human nature that you can only keep your attention on something (whether good or bad) for so long until you have to move your resources on to something else.

Spectral··on Startup Had ‘Masturbation’ Zone, Exec Who Took Off Pants in Meeting: Lawsuit
This website took so long with load and was loaded with so many animated ads and unresponsive scrolling while more ads just kept popping up slowly it's amazingly awful how [news] sites have gotten these days to try to survive.
Spectral··on Farewell, Google Maps
I would be interested in the details on this as well, as we heavily use mapping, routing/directions, autocomplete.
Spectral··on Farewell, Google Maps
I work for a startup who's job is to primarily help people find places on a map (free to users, no ads) so this change affected us by a great extent.

As I'm working through implementing google's suggested best practices and ways to cut down on API calls, it's still quite a shocking realization that each ONE map load (aka any user that loads our site) costs us almost a cent a piece (0.7 per Dynamic Maps load to be exact)

Spectral··on Family fun with deepfakes
This might be a thing in the future, when the technology becomes fast enough that you watch movies live...starring yourself.
Spectral··on Ask HN: What are you working on and why is it awesome? Please include URL
Working on a way to buy a new car online and skip all the dealership salespeople, haggling, upselling, etc.

You can build your car online (colors & options) and set your price, and your customization gets distributed to all of our dealerships (LA only currently) and see who accepts it. Cuts down on the dealer sales funnel as well so it's a win-win on both sides!

Spectral··on Explore how people in the U.S. aged 18 to 34 have changed over four decades
The age bracket doesn't really work out for certain categories, as for the below example it automatically excludes most people age 18-21 as with a standard 4 year degree will land you around the age of 22 minimum.

Bachelor's Degree or Higher, Age 18 to 34 Percent of total population age 18 to 34 years with bachelor's degree or higher

Spectral··on Show HN: People Food - $7 Office Lunches for Hungry Startups
Landing page looks nice. Should probably change your "Tell me more!" button as I expected to find out more information upon clicking on it, but instead it felt more like a "I'm interested, sign me up!" Also I noticed the middle of the page is an image, which is noticeably blurred when stretched out on my monitor so you may want to change that. Good luck!
Spectral··on Show HN: Hacker airlines, airline as a platform. Create your flight.
The concept seems pretty interesting, but it turned me off when it required Twitter permissions to even do anything. So I still don't know what it does. Conclusion: Interesting, but not interesting enough for me to give permissions without first offering me more details.
Spectral··on iOS 7
This honestly just looks like they are taking a bunch of apps, each with their own individual uses, and deciding which ones they want to include as part of the core package and over glorifying their uses. I can see a lot of these features being cool at first, but quickly to be turned off and remained unused in order to conserve battery. Nice presentation and seems like it'll do well selling to the general public, but doesn't seem to amount to much actual material benefits when you think it through. Of course, this is all still speculation so we shall see.
Spectral··on Lenticular Photo Used To Secretly Convey Hot Line Number To Abused Kids
This isn't "bad news" for tall kids. Essentially nothing has changed for them overall, they wouldn't see this message anyways. This is just possibly good news for the demographic of medium/short kids who may have the chance of seeing this, which is the whole purpose of this campaign.
Spectral··on Pixel-Based Websites: Resources, Tutorials, And Examples
For those who didn't bother going through the list, here is one of the listed sites that caught my attention: http://www.effectgames.com/demos/canvascycle/

The art is extraordinary and the background sounds match perfectly and are very relaxing. Definitely worth taking a look at.

Spectral··on How to Get Startup Ideas
Right now I'm currently 21 years old and I've had quite a few organic ideas pop up before which I took the time to brainstorm a little about, sometimes even creating a little website for them. I've shown to many of my friends my aspiring entrepreneur-ish spirit and many of them support my ideas, but I'm still at a standstill over here. I personally feel that the main problem I'm going through is that the college I chose to go to is subpar, to the level where it does not produce many people with "dreams." Everyone around me are just lazy people who like to party, so unless I spend all day trying to go to other campuses to talk to people, I find that I rarely get to experience an intelligent conversation about tech, career goals, and whatnot. Has anyone ever encountered this and have any advice for me? I go to Cal Poly Pomona and have many smart friends (from highschool) but they go to schools like UC Berk, UCI, UCLA, etc.
