SpeakMouthWords··on When you change the world and no one notices
I had a hunch that was the case. I can't imagine the people of the time being concerned about the air being polluted.
SpeakMouthWords··on China has built an elevated bus that travels above car traffic
I wouldn't consider those "retail market" as per my comment above
SpeakMouthWords··on Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington to step down
That is not the meaning of :^)

:^) indicates that a joke is being made. It's quite similar to TwitchTV's Kappa, if you know about that.

SpeakMouthWords··on Show HN: Give 7B people an instant physical address
What3Words, for example, would be a great help to all the Deliveroo drivers that can't find my house because it opens onto an alleyway instead of a road. This is in the UK, mind you, not Mongolia.
SpeakMouthWords··on How Silicon Valley helps spread the same sterile aesthetic across the world
What's your preferred term for that lifestyle?
SpeakMouthWords··on China has built an elevated bus that travels above car traffic
"...so this excludes SUVs or larger trucks"

You will struggle to find many members of the retail market using those in cities outside of america

SpeakMouthWords··on Anthropic Capitalism and the New Gimmick Economy
I've noticed this repeatedly in these vast, sweeping future-of-the-economy outlook pieces. The writer is keen to point out everything that means that the current paradigm is bound to shift, but they never take the time to stick their neck out and postulate what it's shifting into.

That said, I did enjoy this article.

SpeakMouthWords··on Off the Grid
The good folks of tumblr have a succinct counter-argument to suggestions like this. It is, and I quote:

"durr hburr technology is bad fire is scary and thomas edison was a witch"

SpeakMouthWords··on Boaty McBoatface: What You Get When You Let the Internet Decide
I went to the Pirate Party conference in the UK a few years ago. This method of decision making was proposed, but issue that was recognised was that of absenteeism. What happens when Alice gives her vote to Bob, but then gets disillusioned with the entire system and disengages without de-registering her delegation. Any liquid democracy system needs a strong way of differentiating between genuine delegation and disinterest, in order to stop legacy power accruals.
SpeakMouthWords··on The Gang of Retirees Behind the Hatton Garden Heist
I sincerely hope the story gets turned into a quirky British comedy movie. It's the perfect fit.
SpeakMouthWords··on Get an unbiased opinion on if you should get out of bed
Sorry, only just seeing this.

On HN, downvoted comments "fade out" of view. The font gets lighter to start to match the background.

SpeakMouthWords··on SeedRamp
Do they honestly believe that startups so close to death can actually turn around with a sufficiently high probability that this investment is worth it?

If so, all power to them. They obviously know something others don't.

SpeakMouthWords··on Get an unbiased opinion on if you should get out of bed
I'm assuming you're getting downvoted for your lack of capitalisation and sentence subject, rather than the sentiment.

I was going to sign up for this, but now I won't knowing that their login page has not a whiff of security about it.

SpeakMouthWords··on London vs San Francisco – back and forth
>PUA

I'm assuming the person you're relying to is excluding borderline megalomania from their calculations.

SpeakMouthWords··on Marc Andreessen Pro-Colonialism Tweet Riles India Tech World
One of Evans' favourite debate tactics is to tweet something brimming with subtext, then when someone calls him out on it, takes a literal approach to what he said. It's infuriating.
SpeakMouthWords··on Pokemon Go for iOS and Android
I'm sure you're already aware, but it's worth noting that Nintendo produce a 3DS aimed at children called the 2DS. There are two key features of the 2DS.

1. No 3D screen. Nintendo warns about the effects of a 3D screen on a child's eyesight.

2. No hinge! Less chance of being broken by folding it back too far etc. Children tend to wear the hinges out on these things.

SpeakMouthWords··on Why Great Britain Residents Live Where They Do
A lesson in how to lie with graphs in this article. The percentage supposedly represented by the boxes is indicated using the width of the box, but the human eye instinctively uses the area. That's how you can make 30% look 4 times larger than 15%, through the cunning manipulation of square laws.
SpeakMouthWords··on 3D GIFs Created with a Simple Visual Effect
One particularly interesting thing about the origin of this effect is that it spawned from the file size limit on .gif files on tumblr. If users wanted to exceed the balance of gif length, frame rate, and detail that they wanted, they would upload multiple sections of the same scene side by side. Tumblr's formatting would then add in the white bars automatically. This presumably gave the inspiration to use this for a 3-D effect.
SpeakMouthWords··on Bitcoin breaks $200
A business opportunity whichever way you slice it.
SpeakMouthWords··on Yelp Hipster Finder
Either answer should give a valid measure of regional hipsterdom. Is it just hipsters that use Yelp? If so, go where they're reviewing. If not, follow the hipster tag. I can certainly vouch for the validity of the London version, that's for sure.
SpeakMouthWords··on This is a web page
"One's she had to go the emergency tree" caused me to spit out my drink a little with laughter. All done with words.
SpeakMouthWords··on Poll: What is your age?
A similar solution would have been to not answer at all. Is there a non-tangential purpose served by answering "Do not wish to disclose" on a non-mandatory poll?
SpeakMouthWords··on Rand and Ron Paul denounce net neutrality and the public domain
That first paragraph is choked with hyperbolic language. I think I'd rather read a different source on the matter if one exists.
SpeakMouthWords··on 4 Weeks with DuckDuckGo
The writer appears to be the wrong audience of !bang. As a physics student, I find !w tremendously helpful. Image searching is also much faster since it all can be done in the search bar rather than requiring the mouse. !wa for wolfram alpha is again great. It's far better for sites in which there is no better alternative than using their search bar, rather than the type of usage the article seemed to employ.
SpeakMouthWords··on 'To change the world' is a terrible reason to do a startup
Working for a charity will NOT change the world, since charity places are already oversubscribed. There's an interesting Oxford-based thinktank that works on the most effective forms of making a difference called 80,000 Hours. They're quite a good read, I'll leave the link here.
