SpeakMouthWords··on Cleo (Mathematician)
Very much analogous to the current AI proofs debate
SpeakMouthWords··on “Math 2.0” will need to value mathematical progress more holistically
In the future, some mathematics will be proven but not understood.

Frontier Mathematicians will work on proving theorems, and Pure Mathematicians will work on taking proven results and making them understood.

SpeakMouthWords··on Measurement of the W boson mass reveals 7σ deviation from calculations
Someone has run an experiment, and in this experiment they created a large amount of evidence that seems to say that quite an important particle in particle physics weighs something slightly different from what we thought it should.

This is important because the weight of that particle was predicted by our generally-accepted theory of how the universe works. If the weight is different, it means the theory hasn't taken into account everything that it should.

SpeakMouthWords··on No laughing matter? what the Romans found funny
I had a completely different interpretation to everyone else. I read it as the astrologer doubling down on his assertion despite the evidence staring him in the face. The guy can't have kids, so he should look after the ones he has! (Even though they prove that he CAN have kids)
SpeakMouthWords··on Why don't tech companies pay their engineers to stay?
The Bridgerton example is silly and not comparable. His character is barely in the other books, so of course he's not in the other seasons. It's like asking why Professor Quirrell isn't in the second Harry Potter film.
SpeakMouthWords··on Reddit Welcomes Michael Seibel to Board of Directors
It's not the full-time job of each member.
SpeakMouthWords··on N26 will be leaving the UK
Worth noting that N26 was touted for a while as a grim reaper that would come to the UK with its vast capitalisation (at the time about 2-3x as a much as any UK mobile bank) and blow Monzo and Revolut away.

A good lesson that a well-funded incumbent in another market can't always make the hop to a different geography with assured success.

SpeakMouthWords··on Depressed People See the World More Realistically (2017)
You would be hard pressed to elucidate a biological causation there.
SpeakMouthWords··on Decrement carbon: Stripe's negative emissions commitment
Cars and air-con are the main offenders there, right?
SpeakMouthWords··on Y Combinator invests in Monzo through its Continuity Fund
Incidentally what doesn't Monese (https://monese.com/business) have that you need? Is it the end-of-year statement?
SpeakMouthWords··on Brain imaging study reveals signs of Parkinson’s decades before symptoms appear
The analogy I've heard for early detection of neurodegeneration is that it turns the condition from terminal to chronic. This is similar to how late detection of HIV usually means AIDS and death, now it means a manageable condition, but life.

Interestingly, there are a companies working on this from different angles. Here's one doing it with voice analysis: https://auralanalytics.com/

SpeakMouthWords··on A Literary Tube Map of London
This is an outdated version of the Tube map.
SpeakMouthWords··on Unveiling the first-ever image of a black hole [video]

SpeakMouthWords··on Revolut CFO resigns following money laundering controversy
To be fair you have Simple Bank and Qapital in the US if you're looking for Monzolikes
SpeakMouthWords··on Ray Kurzweil 2019 Predictions
I remember having band practice at our drummer's house when I was younger. The drummers mother and our vocalist knew each other. To reach the high notes, she said to him, you have to "sing higher" and your voice will naturally fail down to where you want to be.

These predications kind of feel like that. Kurzweil was "singing higher" than where we ended up. Just enough that it's a clear overshoot, but not but so much that he's off-key.

SpeakMouthWords··on Show HN: Plan your week and increase productivity
If only you'd planned for the traffic from HN!

Website looks down to me.

SpeakMouthWords··on Milabot: A Deep Reinforcement Learning Chatbot
Amazon Echo and Google Home are chatbots, but with a voice interface. They seem relatively well accepted. Your thoughts?
SpeakMouthWords··on Companies from Y Combinator’s Summer 2017 Demo Day (Day 2)
I don't think that's odd at all. We should be doing away with our reverence for this or that technology. Ultimately if there's no token/coin involved, it's none of our business.
SpeakMouthWords··on Open Bazaar – decentralized Bitcoin marketplace
How does the unit economics work here? To my understanding, BTC (even after SegWit) has non-negligible transaction fees. Is this site just eating into VC money to make things feeless?
SpeakMouthWords··on Another Ransomware Outbreak Is Going Global
How do they plan on contacting the employees en masse if the computer is off?
SpeakMouthWords··on Ask HN: Why are credit card chip readers so slow?
I wouldn't muddy the waters here with talk of Monzo. Most chip reader cards don't do what Monzo does in terms of real-time backend transaction verification, that's a generation further than the stuff being rolled out in the US.

SpeakMouthWords··on UK Prime Minister Theresa May announces intention to hold general election
Very much still a meme at this point
SpeakMouthWords··on The brain “doubles up” by simultaneously making two memories of events
It's always tempting to think about the body in terms of the technological concepts of the age. It's not automatically wrong, but there's nothing special about this particular era of computing that would mean we're working with the same methods as the human brain. Not even the fact that we call our systems "neural networks".
SpeakMouthWords··on Ask HN: What is a good source of news for Fintech related stuff?
Do you not find that websites such as the above put out too much content, to the extent that new points and insights that you hadn't considered before get too diluted amongst the amount of time you spend reading said articles?
SpeakMouthWords··on Yes, organic farming will kill us all
> For my perspective in France, here the farming lobby is inexistant/inefficient

Tell that to the EU's Common Agricultural Policy. The kickbacks France gets compared to other countries is insane. Your lobbyists have been most effective!

SpeakMouthWords··on A billion-dollar pharma startup that Silicon Valley has missed
From the article:

>It was the biggest biotech IPO ever in the U.S., raising $360 million. It has largely held up, too. Axovant’s shares, which opened at $15, currently trade around $13.25.

and further down:

> When Axovant went public, a columnist at FierceBiotech warned that it should “scare the hell” out of investors

SpeakMouthWords··on Kodak Ektra
They're two halves of the same photo, but being able to drag that bar sure would be nice.
SpeakMouthWords··on Opposition to Galileo was scientific, not just religious
They are now, but the uninformed reader can't assume that that's static throughout history. There will have been some point where that became fully true, some point where it wasn't, and some continuous function of time defining the extent to which that's true in between. Can you define any of the latter two things on the list?
SpeakMouthWords··on Tech Talent: How the UK lost six potential titans
