SnooSux··on How to read more books
Can you recommend any specific "great" books?
SnooSux··on Why English doesn't use accents
Unless The Economist does it as well, you were probably thinking of The New Yorker.

SnooSux··on Why are lefties more creative? Turns out, they're not
Headline made me think this was about political affiliation
SnooSux··on How OpenElections uses LLMs
There's lots of posts on HN for developments and companies doing OCR and Document Extraction. It's a classic CV problem but still has come a long way in the past couple years
SnooSux··on Physics Informed Neural Networks
Around a month ago there was a PINN post[1] on here and there was a healthy amount of skepticism in the comments. Even in the toxic positivity of LinkedIn, commentors say they're overhyped when a ML "Influencer" posts that one GIF with a MLP and PINN fitting to an oscillator. I would be interested to see what they're actively being used for.

SnooSux··on Ask HN: Has anyone tried adapting a court reporter keyboard for writing code?
This guy on YouTube talks about his experience using a steno keyboard and Plover for writing code.

SnooSux··on Bloom: Optimization-Driven Interactive Diagramming
This could be really cool for teaching geometry (or more advanced math) concepts. Reminds me of GeoGebra and 3B1B.
SnooSux··on Declaring 'Crisis,' South Korean Firms Tell Managers to Work 6 Days a Week
I can't speak to attitudes, but when I was in grad school years ago, Koreans were very well represented in my program. There were fewer Korean students than Chinese but more than Indian. Generally they do well in both coursework and research so there's likely at least some opportunity to stay in the states, assuming they don't have obligations back home.
SnooSux··on Lynn Conway has died
She spoke at my commencement a few years back. Her story is an interesting one
SnooSux··on Japan brings negative interest rates era to an end with first hike in 17 years
What does this mean for the value of the yen in the near future?
SnooSux··on Report on the role of standardized test scores in undergraduate admissions [pdf]
To measure academic achievement they use First Year GPA. It makes sense they're correlated, both require studying known material for a test. But is GPA the best measure, especially first year? I would be interested in other metrics like 3rd-4th year GPA or placements into jobs and such.
SnooSux··on Show HN: The classic Minesweeper on an irregular grid
There are definitely ways to progress from here, but they may be more advanced?

The 1 SouthEast of the bottom 2 touches two tiles, and the 1 immediately West touches a superset of those two. The difference between the larger and smaller set must be clear. And you can go further off of that.

SnooSux··on Pinball Map: Crowd-sourced worldwide map of public pinball machines
Reminds me of similar tools for DDR machines near you.

SnooSux··on Kando: The Cross-Platform Pie Menu
Keyboard shortcuts don't have the discoverability of a menu interface but are good for power users. Ideally they would complement each other.

I really like the ergonomics of pie menus, though my experience is limited to Blender. Navigating linear menus require more fine movements than flicking the mouse in one of 8 or fewer directions. And the direction of mouse movement becomes muscle memory the way a keyboard shortcut does. I find a pie menu works well in a mouse-heavy workflow like 3D modelling. But there are definitely applications where it wouldn't be the right fit.

SnooSux··on Infinite Craft
This idea is pretty common, I remember playing a similar game on my iPod Touch nearly 10 years ago
SnooSux··on Emoji by Year
Interesting that some emoji going back to 2020 don't render on my desktop browser. The flags don't show up either (just the two-letter codes).
SnooSux··on California regulators vote to keep Diablo Canyon nuclear plant open 5 more years
Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant sounds like something out of a video game.
SnooSux··on Should you split that file?
I like tools like vim and tmux for being able to quickly and easily split windows and show multiple terminals. If I could extend things out further than just my monitor that would be really cool. Or stack windows on top of each other so I could scroll through windows in a specific spot.
SnooSux··on Omegle 2009-2023
Stumble Upon used to be so addicting
SnooSux··on Two hackers one keyboard two ways
Feels like it could be useful for one-handed keyboarding as well.
SnooSux··on Show HN: Modern Moodle learning platform open-source alternative
Learnhouse sounds like Anglish for school.
SnooSux··on YouTube passes Netflix as top video source for teens
I'm surprised this wasn't already the case
SnooSux··on Uiua: A minimal stack-based, array-based language
LMAO the trans flag colors for the transpose operator
SnooSux··on Show HN: I'm building a tool to practice numbers in Arabic
I'm personally not a fan of the highlight after a few seconds. I would prefer an option to change the timing or remove it completely.
SnooSux··on Ultra-wealthy people are working remotely from their superyachts
I heard from a friend that executives in the Auto Industry were taking Zoom meetings from their boats early on in the pandemic. The bad PR from this pushed people back to the office.
SnooSux··on Disney invented two colors (2022)
Articles about these colors never seem to have enough pictures of their usage
SnooSux··on The matrix calculus you need for deep learning (2018)
This is the resource I wish I had in 2018. Every grad school course had a Linear Algebra review lecture but never got into the Matrix Calculus I actually needed.
SnooSux··on Pricing Money: A beginner's guide to money, bonds, futures and swaps
I had a college course use Lulu to print the notes into a textbook. The quality was good for a paperback. I think you're limited to black and white though. The formatting of the TeX notes could have been better, but that's probably on the professor to have fixed.
SnooSux··on The end of Reddit? Why the blackout is still going – and what happens next
25 seems a bit high. I would be surprised if it reached 1%.
SnooSux··on WHO advises not to use non-sugar sweeteners for weight control
> But a teaspoon of sugar is approx 20 calories. It's a rounding error in most people's calorie intake.

I agree with everything except for this in the context of this article.

A can of coke is about 8 teaspoons, which is closer to 150 calories. That number is higher for other sodas like Mountain Dew or larger bottle of soda.

Depending on your habits this may be a rounding error in a given week/month or a significant part of your calorie consumption.
