SnaggyJoker··on The birth and death of search engine optimization
I'm fairly certain the author is speaking to the functionality of the application.
SnaggyJoker··on Early human ancestors turned stones into spheres on purpose, study suggests
Kind of makes you wonder if the first arrow heads were formed when someone was trying to make a sphere and struck the rock with flint (or one of the other suitable stones) and accidentally cut themselves on the sharp resulting shard.
SnaggyJoker··on Insomnia Coach: Manage and overcome insomnia, free app by US Govt
Successfully? Probably not.
SnaggyJoker··on U.S. Approves the Sale of Lab-Grown Chicken
Lab grown meat would work for it's supposed target market.

Anything else is an attempt to dupe the dullards.

SnaggyJoker··on U.S. Approves the Sale of Lab-Grown Chicken
Interesting how they call it cultivated meat instead of lab grown meat. It's almost like the idea of artificially constructed meat products is unpalatable to the masses and to increase the likelihood of accidental ingestion it is being deceptively labeled.
SnaggyJoker··on High prices make textbook ‘piracy’ acceptable to most students
I ran into this issue in the most unexpected of classes.

I took some vehicle repair courses as electives and there was an online module despite the majority of class time being spent in a shop environment doing actual work on vehicles.

It was ridiculous.

SnaggyJoker··on The U.S. Military Relies on One Louisiana Factory. It Blew Up
That's one of the major unspoken reasons of why "too big to fail" corporations are bailed out.

They're also often used to supply things the government wants such as n95 masks during the pandemic.

SnaggyJoker··on Fastbook: Listen to audiobooks faster (2020)
I have found that listening to audiobooks at 1.35X speed is the "best value" speed. It shortens the amount of time wasted on silence and is still comprehensible. Going any faster than that leads to some incomprehension and strange audio distortions.

I find that reading rather than listening to an audiobook is the superior form of consumption for knowledge retention however.

I assume this will be different for each individual.

SnaggyJoker··on Amazon is no longer allowing downloading Kindle Unlimited titles via USB
You could always use a quill and ink too.
SnaggyJoker··on Ask HN: I'm 40 and feel my mental ability declining. Programming seems harder.
Pretty sure nobody looks forward to getting older except for the young.

People plan towards retirement which is usually just looking forwards to not having to work anymore.

People look forward to having children and grand children.

I don't know anyone who looks forward to getting older except for the young.

SnaggyJoker··on Re-using the heat in bathwater in Britain
Yeah and bacteria would build up in the reserve tank.

An inline filter of some sort could be used for particles but that would require maintenance.

There would also be soap scum build up and hair conditioner products would gunk up the works I'm sure.

SnaggyJoker··on Re-using the heat in bathwater in Britain
If they used less hot water they would use less energy heating the water.

That was the original thought until I went off on the tangent about saving the hot water in a separate tank from the bathtub after it is "used" for the bath allowing the heat to be harvested and the water to be re-used.

The original post is about leaving the hot water in the bath to use the energy to heat the house or help heat incoming water. The idea of an external tank made out of conductive material would eliminate some of the problems and also allow the water to be re-used for the toilet.

SnaggyJoker··on Re-using the heat in bathwater in Britain
The same tank could be connected to the sink too, turning any toilet into a toilet sink.
SnaggyJoker··on Re-using the heat in bathwater in Britain
You could also switch to a water conserving mist shower and reduce the amount of heated water used for the shower.

You could also reclaim the water from the shower for use in the toilet by turning the supply to the toilet off and manually transferring it to the toilet tank.

There are lots of things you could do to save resources but most things are not done and are not going to be done because it is inconvenient and takes time, and time is money.

Edit: now that you have me thinking about this idea, it would be possible to have a container in the bathroom attached to a plug that has a hand pump and a tube going to the drain that could be used to reclaim and hold the water that could be higher than the toilet supply and the pressure from it could be used to have it self fill the toilet tank. The container could be highly conductive material like stainless steel and it could be relatively sealed to avoid humidity issues. This would of course be a vector for illness in some cases.

SnaggyJoker··on Netflix Expands into Cloud Gaming
I didn't know Netflix already offered games, and after looking at the selection I'm not surprised.
SnaggyJoker··on Heart risks, data gaps fuel debate over Covid-19 boosters for young people
What fuels the debate more than anything is how easily and quickly the goalposts move in discussion over COVID and the vaccines.

The inconsistency and the blatant suppression of dissenting viewpoints does not help either.

SnaggyJoker··on Study finds potential link between daily multivitamin and improved cognition
It was a $3,848,211 study https://taggs.hhs.gov/Detail/AwardDetail?arg_AwardNum=R01AG0...

I wonder what the multivitamin was.

SnaggyJoker··on Amazon to acquire maker of Roomba vacuum for roughly $1.7B
At this point a company is going to need to produce a "deceased cubicle human detection" robot for the few holdouts 40 years from now.
SnaggyJoker··on I made a Google sheet of local elections and it's been removed from Google Drive
It would likely be called a "new technological freedom" from hackers and scams etc. Like how the marxists like to call marxist monetary policy a "new economic freedom".
SnaggyJoker··on Evidence found that insects are possibly able to feel pain
Imagine the mayhem when the bug rights activists free all the crickets.
SnaggyJoker··on Everything You Need to Know About Netflix’s Big Miss
The article doesn't mention the ideological trend Netflix has been having in it's programming. Many people are tiring of having views forced on them and on their favored franchises. This isn't even mentioning the cuties scandal.

When a company goes to war against a section of it's customer base it should be no surprise when they lose them.

Now Netflix is not alone in this endeavor. Amazon has done the same thing with the Wheel Of Time, Disney has done the same thing with Star Wars, Etc.

Am I blowing this out of portion or have you seen the same thing?

SnaggyJoker··on Monetizing hobbies
Something you will find is that sometimes you can become friends with the owners of the speciality shops and borrow their tools. I have run into this in the automotive repair field. Specifically when I was repairing foreign vehicles. Of course some times the shop will charge you for the favor and usually it is better to just recommend them for the service if they have the availability. This can also help bolster your friendship with them.

As far as monetizing something like wheel building, of course the more experience you have the faster you will be at it. In the end it is all about what the customers want, and they might value having you do it over the more experienced person for different (and possibly illogical) reasons than you might think. It might even boil down to simple availability or your location being more convenient.

Make sure you have proper insurance!
