SloughFeg··on Facebook is an attack on the open web
Use mbasic.facebook.com. It can access any URL the heavy webclient can and uses no JS at all.
SloughFeg··on Biomedical companies bleed 500k horseshoe crabs a year
Would you like to know more?
SloughFeg··on Switching to Sublime Text from Vim in 2017
This is essentially the choice I made a couple years back. Vintageous isn't perfect but it's the best vim emulator I've used. Sublime is a great text editor on top of it.
SloughFeg··on Biomedical companies bleed 500k horseshoe crabs a year
Has anyone who is raising ethical concerns of this been around a horseshoe crab? They are essentially large insects. Killing a cockroach because it was in your house is objectively worse. It was just bugging you. This is saving human lives.
SloughFeg··on Ask a Female Engineer: How Can Managers Help Retain Technical Women?
Young women in software get paid 7% more than young men. http://money.cnn.com/2016/04/12/pf/gender-pay-gap/

Where does this pay gap start to come into play?

SloughFeg··on Ask HN: Where do you host your personal blog these days?
I host Ghost on a digital ocean VM. $5 a month isn't too bad hosting anything.
SloughFeg··on Wages rise on California farms, Americans still don’t want the job
The staggering low wages on Californian farms is preventing proper incentivisation to automate these processes. It reminds me of how slaves in the antibellum south prevented the area from becoming industrialized.
SloughFeg··on John Carmack on the Government
> tech focused white male > How could he possibly see the world in any other way? Most everyone on HN or Silicon Valley sees it in another way, white males included.
SloughFeg··on Staying Motivated as a Software Developer
I've found the biggest thing for me being able to continue to be motivated is to have the freedom to really craft the software I'm working on. Nothing is as soulcrushing as having to pump out a substandard delivery.
SloughFeg··on George Orwell’s 1984 is currently the top selling book on Amazon
Doublethink is pervasive in a lot of modern thought. Hopefully this trend will make people evaluate it a bit more.
SloughFeg··on Tell HN: Political Detox Week – No politics on HN for one week
Politics (outside of those that affect tech) should have never been allowed in the first place. Any place where politics isn't specifically forbidden always degenerates into this sort of situation.
SloughFeg··on Choosing Ember over React in 2016
Make sure they are using Typescript/ES6. JavaScript still has some oddities in behavior but I actually prefer some aspects of the language design now compared to python.
SloughFeg··on Wikipedia is fixing one of the Internet’s biggest flaws
It's the washington post. What else would you expect from them?
SloughFeg··on JsonLogic – Build complex rules, serialize them as JSON
Reminds me of the early 00s where everyone and their son were making unmaintainable DSLs in XML
SloughFeg··on Be Kind
The hardest thing for me when I was junior dev was simply being noticed. I'd rather someone be hard on me than to pretend I don't exist.
SloughFeg··on Is College Worth It? It Depends on Whether You Graduate
These sorts of articles always conflate the most basic premise of success- the quality of the people.

Sure, you can point to statistics about how people who graduate from college earn more over a lifetime, but does that really tell you having a degree accounts for their success?

If, tomorrow, we took away all diploma's from people who had graduated from college and gave them to people who hadn't, do you really believe wages would follow?

SloughFeg··on Tell HN: Call your mom
You don't like your mom? What kind of monster are you?!?
SloughFeg··on Hugin – Panorama photo stitcher
Quick, somebody make a news article about the Munin daemon.
SloughFeg··on Huginn: Like Yahoo Pipes plus IFTTT on your server
Is there an online sandbox anywhere to check it out? A project like this simply calls out for their to be a live demo.
SloughFeg··on Brendan Eich Steps Down as Mozilla CEO
In a sad way, all the activists have really done given a good example for why political donations records should be kept away from the public.
SloughFeg··on Any female engineers in San Diego interested in showing my daughter their work?
San Diego or South Dakota?
SloughFeg··on Mt. Gox Says It Has Found 200,000 Bitcoins Worth About $114M
The fact that this company can lose and then find $116 million is a disheartening thought. It ultimately it hurts the whole idea of a cryptocurrency.
SloughFeg··on LogMeIn to discontinue free remote access product
I mostly use sshuttle for this sort of thing now. It works well and is fairly customizable but you're out of luck if you are on an OS that doesn't use iptables.
SloughFeg··on Female Founders
It's interesting that neither this article or Paul's related December article ever address the most basic and seminal question about this in the first place: why is this a problem? Why is it a big deal if there are less female founders than male?

It seems like this whole discussion has been nothing but a bunch of posturing and vague half-solutions about an issue that I'm not sure even exists.

SloughFeg··on Blame Rich, Overeducated Elites as Our Society Frays
Of course, let's blame the elite's for all our societal woes. Humans are rather good at blaming everyone for problems but themselves.
SloughFeg··on Google's Decline Really Bugs Me
I stopped reading at "I'm not female, so I don't have to worry about getting thousands of rape threats every month". Inserting unsubstantiated claims for shock value into an argument just detracts from any other points he is trying to make.
SloughFeg··on Why Do Companies Still Use Microsoft Windows For Displays?
I noticed a malfunctioning display on the CTA here in Chicago and it was running on chrome. Still on Windows but at least they had the foresight to make it portable.
SloughFeg··on The Logic of “Stupid” Poor People
Good to see hackers care about SOCIAL JUSTICE now.
SloughFeg··on Children aren't born smart. They're made smart by conversation
Believing everyone is tabula rasa when it comes to intelligence is one of those white lies society tells itself to make itself feel better. Of course the environment one grows up in is important but this article is kidding itself into thinking it is the primary factor.

We inherit so many other traits from our parents, why should intelligence be any different? What makes it so special that it requires a convoluted explanation that rests on so many assumptions?

SloughFeg··on Fingerprints are Usernames, not Passwords
Only the mind is secure. I think this is all fairly obvious: we need to build thought reading technology to have entry-less authentication.
