I think that attitude is definitely still around with hackers and enthusiasts but tech and programming as a job has expanded so much that it’s picked up anyone who wants a high paying job with little/less qualification. It’s become a means of rising out of poverty without having to spend thousands on school. I had a solid 7 year run as (mostly) a web dev and I was fully self taught so it was definitely the case for me
Programmers in my experience are some of the least risky people I know. The majority will absolutely take their talents to the next highest bidder regardless of moral or ethical scruples. I don’t blame em, personally, I also see it as the only logical outcome
A public beta does not and should not allow major breaking changes like this. Would you be satisfied as a manager or PM if this was released to the public under your watch? You’d be fired if this wasn’t an intentional change. If it’s not patched immediately then it’s a good assumption that this is an intentional change.
I’ve never been a part of academia but I know it’s been fraught with all sorts of fraud for the last few decades (maybe forever idk) but this is a new type of weirdness to me. Is anything trustworthy is that space?
I couldn’t finish the list because by the time I got to shaymin it’s obvious that the majority of this is just picking out details that look similar NOT the same. Bunch of nitpicking with no substance.
You’re just old. And maybe not looking in the right places? I find the sentiment is similar in many music scenes among older folk but there’s so many amazing modern bands in a plethora of genres that I can only assume their taste is hyper specific or they’re not looking correctly.
Right it would be a bigger problem if I owned and depended on this hypothetical car but my hypothetical self only needs it for Ubers. Maybe I’ll switch to Lyft or local Taxi service. That might make me wait more but the point is that this isn’t a hysterical response, much like monitoring and avoiding the 737 MAX until further notice isn’t hysterical. It’s simply sensible.
Take it like this: If you have to ride share and you hear that a common car used by drivers of Uber is having an increased failure rate, not passing inspections and have been temporarily banned from being on the road until more is learned; I think a pretty fair response is to try and avoid entering that car regardless of the ratio of incidents when driving that car, and when biking to the dealership to get it
What isn’t significant about Boeing consistently failing in the construction and quality of the 737 MAX? How does comparing it to driving to the airport prove anything? Scratch that, it proves nothing. What are you getting at?
I like programming but not as much as I like other hobbies. If I’m not making money in some capacity from programming, then I just go do something else that I enjoy more. Money is a strong motivator and for most people, it is stronger than passion and curiosity because those don’t put food on my table.
From what I understand, there was an unused hardware register not used by the OS that was the entry way for this attack. It’s been patched with no performance impact and there was an earlier HN submission with more details. It took advantage of 4 or 5 bugs that have been patched. Warning, this has been SCREAMING state actor vs state actor
What are the practical advantages to owning your own email server and not using something like proton? Maybe I’m just not a heavy user of email but I’m struggling to find use cases that aren’t mostly ideological.
I’ve helped teach a couple of those full stack web development boot camps a few years ago and you’d be surprised how many things you’d consider difficult to mess up that others will find impossibly difficult to grasp. Perfectly intelligent, rational people suddenly don’t know how to type a command i said like 10 seconds ago.
I do hope you get better and advising against ignorant support groups spreading misinformation is good, but it’s also stupid as all hell to suggest to others that they give up. Accepting that there are no answers is the same as lying down to die. There is always an answer and even if you or I won’t find it, the group pursuit for truth is a positive thing
I wasn’t part of the original convo but I also think you’re missing the point. The backup camera is not part of a “basic car” and a series of mirrors is how we’ve backed up and parked for decades before backup cameras were invented.
Seriously imagine the most basic car you can imagine. I mean as little to no software as possible. That’s the basic car. Any other addition, anything else that someone might slap into the car, should not affect the basic cars functionality if turned off or otherwise impaired. This is obviously possible and the example of cars are with basic systems not NEEDING an update and still driving fine is evidence of this.
Not if it’s destructive. Not entirely sure what the procedure is to digitize them but if the original is lost in the process, no amount of digital decentralization will help that and there are plenty of good arguments against relying on digital storage solutions for long term data storage. They’re just not long term enough (yet)
I never said it’s just. Don’t put words into other peoples mouths if you intend to argue in good faith. If you want systemic change, then that is what I believe has to happen. Please provide a better idea
In the short term, the employee. In the long term, as people leave due to lack of tip pay, service degrades and customers stop showing up due to the degrading service, the employer. Tipping as a requirement needs to go. Pay them a minimum wage because it shouldn’t be the customers problem. If a business owner cannot do that, the business should not exist.
Money? I guess money. Show that they know nothing about aliens and suddenly a few billion are wiped because a few projects had to close down? Idk I’m honestly just speculating
Really depends on the kind of music you wanna make. Since this is a sampler though, you can probably fire up something like reaper (free) or fl studio (less free) and start chopping up your favorite songs to make something new. Teenage engineering makes some really unique hardware though. I own their OP-1 and it’s a hell of a learning curve to get efficient with it but it’s so cool.
