SippinLean··on Treat artificial light like other forms of pollution, say scientists
The cable guy had problems debugging the box until he realized my tape blocking the status LED. When I explained (a bit uncomfortably) that I usually cover them on appliances, he said "we see that a lot."
SippinLean··on Over 80% of Covid-19 patients in a hospital study have Vitamin D deficiency
This particular study found no causation

> No causal relationship was found between vitamin D deficiency and COVID-19 severity as a combined endpoint or as its separate component

SippinLean··on Over 80% of Covid-19 patients in a hospital study have Vitamin D deficiency
A patient that is no longer hospitalized

> 216 patients aged ≥18 years, with confirmed COVID-19 [admitted] from March 10 to March 31, 2020, and

> 197 sex-matched population-based controls recruited from the Camargo Cohort during their last follow-up visit on January-March of the past year

Opening shot? That movie only had one shot ;)
SippinLean··on Facebook, Twitter dismantle global array of disinformation networks
Trump does not have the competence to responsibly constrain a pandemic to the same deaths rates as all the other first-world countries.

He has demonstrated his incompetence in wrt to this, it is not objective.

SippinLean··on Custom Bullets with CSS:Marker
"Before" and "after" refers to the position relative to the content. The bullets aren't part of the content.
SippinLean··on Toward a “modern” Emacs
The point isn't to reduce the contrast, it's to use contrast based on hue and less on value.

Accessibility is the real concern. Solarized fails many of the checks for accessible text under standards such as WCAG 2.0.

SippinLean··on Higher ground: the expert guide to making the perfect cup of coffee at home
I've owned all the brewing contraptions and a home roaster.

Using fresh beans, and (burr) grinding them fresh is 95% of the equation.

SippinLean··on US Border Patrol says they can create central repository of traveler emails
Most of those cases have been related to the 4th, not the 5th right?
SippinLean··on US Border Patrol says they can create central repository of traveler emails
Why did you oversimplify "unprecedented policy of expelling migrant children from the U.S. southern border without giving them an opportunity to seek humanitarian refuge" to "deporting foreign nationals living illegally?"

Because the former is clearly less partisan.

SippinLean··on US Border Patrol says they can create central repository of traveler emails
There are a handful of state courts in the US that find passwords testimonial, and therefore the Fifth Amendment prevents compelled production of passwords. [1]

Could that apply here?

SippinLean··on NYC is dead forever – here's why
The article is mostly anecdotal and, at this time, has grammatical errors. The thing it does most effectively is advertise its author's comedy club.
SippinLean··on How to effectively evade the GDPR and the reach of the DPA
There are at least 50 data brokers I've had my information removed from. They will say whatever they can--"we need proof," "it's just public information anyway."

Every time I insisted they take it down, right now. Every time they have complied.

There's so many it's basically pulling weeds at this point.

The scarier companies are the ones collecting pictures of your face to train their private facial recognition software.

(Hell I'm hesitant to post HERE because you can't manage the privacy, content or existence of your comments)

Too high contrast. You always go #333 over #FFF.
SippinLean··on Building the New Twitter.com
It's a feature for developers, because it's in the code, and it doesn't break their product. It won't affect anyone but users like you and I that are developers themselves, it might break their code, but that's not Twitter's responsibility.

Non-deterministic class names are quickly becoming the norm for a lot of good reasons.

SippinLean··on Building the New Twitter.com
But it is a feature, there's a few different (good) reasons to do that. Here its almost surely tied to CSS-in-JS/React.

HTML class names would not affect accessibility.

SippinLean··on Building the New Twitter.com
> Twitter now has obfuscated CSS classes for everything

Non-deterministic class names have been popular for a while, especially in React; open up Chrome inspector on a Gmail tab. Sometimes they are used for minification. This might not be a (strictly) hostile change.

It annoys me too, I write custom CSS for any site I use a lot.

SippinLean··on How e-commerce sites manipulate people into buying things
I was vague. Talking, as in speaking into a phone, feels more laborious than talking as in typing in a chatbox to me. I more often refer to the latter as "chatting."
SippinLean··on How e-commerce sites manipulate people into buying things
That's a very poor user experience, I agree with much of what you said; I just wanted to add some facts I felt were missing.
SippinLean··on How e-commerce sites manipulate people into buying things
Not true, the law applies to making it easy to opt-out of automatic renewal

SippinLean··on How e-commerce sites manipulate people into buying things
Strange that an NYT got facts about NYT wrong:

* You don't have to "talk" with a CSR online, it's a chat window

* You can cancel with an email to unsubscribe@nytimes.com

* By disabling auto-renewal the subscription will automatically be canceled at the end of the subscription period

SippinLean··on Ask HN: Stuck with an unpronounceable product name
I worked at Time Warner Cable when they got acquired by Charter, and rebranded to their "Spectrum" cable product.

We got a customer email that went:

"Great, you went from being The Worst Company to Speculum, you're literally f*cking us!"

Point is: rebranding is hard and expensive, but it will get more expensive the longer you wait.

If you doubt it's possible for a _mature_ product, remember Kinko's?

SippinLean··on Google Photos will stop syncing to Drive
But is there a new service to sync your photos (outside of Drive)?
SippinLean··on Google Photos will stop syncing to Drive
I'm confused, we'll have a separate Photos folder somewhere?

That won't sync? I thought just photos on Drive wouldn't sync.

SippinLean··on 58 Bytes of CSS to look great nearly everywhere
> What device do you have that is 375px wide?

iPhone 6/7/8 users still drives a non-negligible amount of conversion on our site. We don't target devices, 375px is a general target for the smallest screen size we'd be likely to encounter.
