Signez··on EU-wide maximum limit of €10K for cash payments
No, they have not made a new law last week, but one of the highest courts has decided that this data should not be public (as the regulations stand, especially in relation to the GDPR). Nothing prevents the European Union institutions from updating the regulations on the subject.

...and this is what they seem to suggest in this paragraph, which is a clear reminder of this event:

> Member states should ensure that any natural or legal person that can demonstrate a legitimate interest has access to information held in the beneficial ownership registers, and such persons should include those journalists and civil society organisations that are connected with the prevention and combating of money laundering and terrorist financing.

Signez··on Ask HN: 2FA for Credit Cards?
You are looking for "3D Secure"; in Europe, it is required by regulation for all non-recurring online payments over 30 euros.
Signez··on Ex-Twitter exec blows the whistle, alleging reckless cybersecurity policies
This excerpt is frightening:

> About half of the company's 500,000 servers run on outdated software that does not support basic security features such as encryption for stored data or regular security updates by vendors

Signez··on The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe Review
Celeste was a big deal wayyyyy before the main character (and their main author) was officially characterized as trans, a year later after the game launched.
Signez··on Talking about layoffs
A lot of Europeans countries have protections in place, including mandatory weeks of notice and negociation, before any layoffs can happen.

Somehow, regulators are fine here with interpersonal discussion — including through electronic channels — still happening up to the last day of employment.

Signez··on Ask HN: Does removing Google Analytics penalise a website in Google search?
Doing so would be a textbook abuse of dominance, and would not fly to any antitrust regulator — I don't think they would try to implement that.
Signez··on Startups, this is how design works (2012)
At some point, we'll have to talk about the fact that designers can't explain anything about their work (and/or the vision of their work) to other non-designers professionals without being particularly condescending.

The fact that we can notice this even in the startup sector speaks even louder.

Signez··on Show HN: Unlimited machine translation API for $200 / Month
You have quite a big typo, very visible, above the fold, in one of the biggest piece of content. It's a funny one, but a bit weird for a language-related product! (Quck -> Quick)

Signez··on I read the federal government’s Zero-Trust Memo so you don’t have to
Let's note that this very concerning problem is only one if organizations take an allowlist approach to this "context aware authorization" requirement.

Detecting changes — and enforcing escalation in that case — can be enough, e.g. "You always uses Safari on macOS to connect to this restricted service, but now you are using Edge on Windows? Weird. Let's send an email to a relevant person / ask for a MFA confirmation or whatever."

Signez··on Wordle Is a Love Story
In France, we had Motus [0], which is the same thing but with longer words — and it's actually an adaptation of Dutch version of Lingo! It ran on France 2 for 29 seasons and is widely known in French popular culture.

Signez··on People who have unusual, or non-existent, inner voices
All the time. To be fair, it can be (a little bit) annoying at times too: typically when you have an earworm you can't get rid of, and loops in your head until you actually listen to some other music.
Signez··on Brave disables Chromium FLoC features
> an engine that has no developers anymore since last year

There are still more than a hundred developers working on Gecko.

Signez··on Response to “WireGuard: great protocol, but skip the Mac app”
May I suggest to @dang to update the title with something just a little bit more informative without much editorialization, like:

WireGuard Developer Response to "Great protocol, skip the Mac app" blogpost

Signez··on Show HN: Candymail – Email Automation for Node.js
I understand that it may improve "engagement" and reduce churn, but gosh I hate those "follow-up" emails.

For example, I'm currently trying out PagerDuty, and those pesky emails about "how to configure whatever you've already configured" are really annoying. At least, please take a few minutes to code something to check if your "beloved new customer" already have done what you are suggesting them to do.

My time is quite precious. Please don't waste it by suggesting things you can figure out I already know.

Signez··on Tillis Releases Text of Bipartisan Legislation to Fight Illegal Streaming
I don't understand why the US Constitution doesn't have a way to say that you can't hide something that is not remotely related to the subject of a bill into it.

We have that in the French Constitution and it's very useful to take down this kind of thing we call a "cavalier législatif".

Signez··on The IRS Sets a Trap for Cryptocurrency Tax Cheats
I am more than happy to be able to access to healthcare, school, good infrastructure thanks to my taxes – but I'm European, so maybe it's more about how the US system uses your taxes instead of the taxes itself.
Signez··on Lesser-known Web APIs
I would add the ResizeObserver to the list of legit APIs too. It solves a common problem that happen with some complex layouts, and it's very easy to use (and widely supported!).
Signez··on You download the app and it doesn’t work
> You can't publish something saying "do whatever you want" and then complain that people aren't being fair to you.

Well… you can complain. You just can't sue them. But the complaint would still be valid.

You can act like a jerk and follow all the laws at the same time, it's just that the consequences for you won't be identical.

Signez··on Declining worker power vs. rising monopoly power: explaining recent macro trends
> To resolve inequality we can't just have the mindset of punish the rich for creating wealth.

I would argue that millions (if not billions) are injected into corr^Wlobbying to make sure that we never fully have this mindset, indeed.

Meanwhile, the rich are way less taxed (proportionally) than the middle class, and in my opinion, that's a problem that stifle Western economies.

Signez··on DuckDuckGo Billboards
Lobbying? It makes sense to make your name resonate to European Commission employees (and MEPs and their collaborators, and European journalists) that live, travel or work there.
Signez··on Make your 404s into 302s
You are not alone there. I tried multiple times to understand what the author tries to convey, without being really sure to grasp it.

At first I thought that it was simply some advocacy for taking the time to route legacy content using 302, but it also seems to be some sub-domain trick with years…?

It's really confusing to me.

Signez··on GitHub Codescanning
It seems that it will be free for open-source, public repositories, and quite pricy for private repositories.

"A member of our sales team will reach out to discuss details" is a great euphemism for "be ready to pay quite a few thousand bucks per year for this feature".

Signez··on GitHub Codespaces
Having some thought about the GitPod folks[0] that provide nearly the same feature set.

I hope we are not witnessing a big sherlocking being done here, but… it really looks like one. :/

Signez··on France offers each cyclist €50 for bike repairs once lockdown ends
To be fair, some newspapers did checked the information (like Libération's fact-checking service, CheckNews.fr – so did NextINpact, that are quite specialised in those kind of governement overreach), but it wasn't clear if that kind of decision was part of a reasonable interpretation of the law by the minister.

The Conseil d’État clarified that it wasn't.

Signez··on Google inserts links to its Duo video chat app when users text about Zoom
How isn't this textbook abuses of dominant position?
Signez··on Rust-analyzer – an IDE backend for Rust
I'd just chime in to say that Rust-Analyzer is an awesome tool that really helped me as a Rust beginner. Having your text editor show the types of everything, highlighting the mistakes you made or suggesting functions right after you keypressed a dot is awesome to discover all the features Rust offers you as a developer.

Can’t wait for rust-analyzer to graduate as an even more fully featured LSP – it has the potential to really changes the daily life of thousands!

Signez··on The web as a GUI toolkit
I would suggest you to take a look at Vue; you can use it without any transpiler or heavy toolchain, just adding a good ol' script tag in your headers and voilà. The getting started guide [1] is awesome and translated to a gazillion of languages, so it also helps :)

I recommand Vue to any Javascript beginner that want to add interactivity to their page without having to handle the DOM manipulation themselves.

Signez··on Ask HN: What do you regret you didn't know when programming for iOS or Android?
Flutter took the approach of treating the screen as a blank canvas. Everything is drawn using Skia primitives, exposed as Dart libraries.

It has some downsides – they had to expose a lot of accessibility features on top of that using platform APIs – but it's quite nice when you are a developer, as you can Cmd-click on anything to learn how it is drawn, and use the same tools to build your own widgets if you need.

Signez··on California's Assembly Votes to Allow Communists to Hold State Jobs
But is it? Doesn't look like one in hindsight.
Signez··on Ask HN: How do you share/organize knowledge at work and life?
I agree: this trick of saying that you are using Notion as a source of truth when you work at Notion had left a bitter aftertaste, on a product I should love overwise.
