ShirsenduK··on A real world guide to WebRTC
IMO, WebRTC is the technology which will make browsers trump apps. Especially, now as iOS 11 starts shipping with support for it.
ShirsenduK··on Battle for the Internet
Here is an article from couple of days back. https://scroll.in/latest/843200/home-minister-rajnath-singh-... - Near the end there is a section about Darjeeling.

I live in Darjeeling but at the foothills where the Internet hasn't been blocked. I have friends who have been suffering.

Banks can't function without internet.

Doctors cannot look up medicines without the internet.

Its a mess.

People are not tech savvy enough to use FireChat.

We have free voice calls on mobile(3G/4G). Where does one start to build a data on voice app?

Thank you for the support! Please spread the word :)

ShirsenduK··on Battle for the Internet
In my hometown, Darjeeling (India), Internet has been blocked since June 17, 2017 by the government to censor the citizens of the area. Media doesn't cover us well as its a small town. How do we Battle for the Internet? How can we drum up support?
ShirsenduK··on Show HN: GreenPiThumb – A Raspberry Pi Gardening Bot
You may also hack this product by Xiaomi.

There are many wifi enabled switches to enable the water pump. Try out the ESP8266 and/or ESP32 in your next project.

Your mind will blown with the possibilities :D

Also, you may loose the soil and go for hydroponics, that would make this really from the future.

ShirsenduK··on Aadhaar isn’t progress – it’s dystopian and dangerous
Yes they scan the biometrics and I allow it. But do they make it the password for different services? Coz thats where its headed. Authentication and Authorisation are not the same thing.
ShirsenduK··on Ask HN: Is Telegram better than WhatsApp?
It should be 'than WhatsApp' and not 'then WhatsApp' :)
ShirsenduK··on How to shoot on iPhone 7
Technology should take those decisions for you. Others like Google will show how to do that.
ShirsenduK··on How to shoot on iPhone 7
There was a time when Apple products were user friendly but now we need guides. They said technology would ease our lives. I'm disappointed with this shift at Apple where they want to look and sound cool rather than be useful.
ShirsenduK··on The slow demise of Wikipedia Zero on the subcontinent
I can confirm with proof that they spread incorrect information and will not fix it even if you bring it to their notice. i.e. Fake News propagator.
ShirsenduK··on Ask HN: Anybody using Amazon Machine Image for AWS Deep Learning?
Siraj is _the_ bomb! Fellow wizard here :)
ShirsenduK··on Ask HN: What are some good React resources?
I second that!
ShirsenduK··on The Mac Pro Lives
They have world's top engineers, designers and dollars! And they use reporters send out an apology. Can't even do it directly to its users/fans. Reading the content it feels like a damage control PR.

Apple has lost its way. Their support has become horrible if not arrogant. Their updates keep bricking devices more often than not. Their hardware fails more than it used to.

If they thought the Mac Pro was a mistake, how is the MacBook Pro a success?

Can't innovate anymore, my arse, you bet you can't!

ShirsenduK··on Apple Introducing New Mac Pro, Pro iMacs and External Display Over Next Year
Can't innovate anymore, actually yes! :P
ShirsenduK··on Starting a Hardware Company with $60K
Ha Ha! I have spent way too much time staring at 3D printers to get a good print! :)
ShirsenduK··on Starting a Hardware Company with $60K
Let me first apologise for the late response. I am sorry I had forgotten about this thread.

The best 3D printer IMO is the Original Prusa sold by Josef Prusa himself. shop.prusa3d.com

3D Hubs also has a great section on 3D Printer reviews and ratings.

ShirsenduK··on Starting a Hardware Company with $60K
The Da Vinci is _not_ a Makerbot knockoff. Its a printer based on open source designs of Reprap.

Makerbot should never get credit for it after they chose to leave the community. Markerbot is actually a Reprap ripoff!

That said, I will be waiting for the next set of articles. This is good! :)

ShirsenduK··on How We Are Improving Performance
yup. I got a digital ocean box with nginx and caching up and running in couple of hours. Added some rewrite rules to make the urls pretty. Now just need to port app codes.
ShirsenduK··on How We Are Improving Performance
Glad to see that you have acknowledged the problem. I am sure you will fix them :)
ShirsenduK··on How We Are Improving Performance
I am in the processes to switching to thumbor! Glad to see confirmation of the solution. :)
ShirsenduK··on How We Are Improving Performance
I understand your support might be swamped but this is what your support wrote to me;

"Support is on-call during regular business hours, Monday - Friday, and premium customers can request SLAs for support."

This, while other users complained to me via twitter/email that they were also not getting any valid responses. I would not send those words while my service is not working as expected.

I'm in the process of moving out of Imgix esp. after your support said they would be happy to cancel my account if thats what I wanted.

The pushback from your support made me setup a production level thumbor instance which will go live next week.

Thanks for your reply but I wish you had replied to https://twitter.com/troysk704/status/841158793287278593 sooner.

ShirsenduK··on How We Are Improving Performance
They kept serving an old image even after I flushed it multiple times. The image had an old discount code which customers presented us. We had to respect that even though we were technically not running the offer and was financially tough.

Their support (after few days said), they don't support Shopify. Their whole pitch was; we are Shopify compatible; when we signed up.

ShirsenduK··on How We Are Improving Performance
They put out a blogpost while their support keeps stonewalling and denying any such issues. Nor do they reply on twitter or even tweet the blogpost. This seems too little too late.

Disclaimer: I am currently a customer who had financial loss because of them.

ShirsenduK··on Ask HN: Fixing hiring
Recruiters don't share and make it browsable by anyone.
ShirsenduK··on Ask HN: What's the one thing that let you grow the most as a developer?
Code Reviews. Doing them as well as getting your code reviewed.
ShirsenduK··on Ask HN: I’ve been applying to a million jobs
Hii Olivier,

I am assuming I was in a similar place like you 8-10 years back. In retrospect, I have found that the following reasons affected my applications.

1. I was from an unknown college in an unknown place. Yahoo! or Microsoft wouldn't even look at my resume. Too much of unknown.

2. Startups wouldn't hire me as relocation is expensive and 8-10 years back the good startups were scrappy. Btw, aren't the best ones always scrappy? And you might have been applying to them as you want to work with the best.

3. I listed a lot of expertise which I had. But its hard to believe especially for HRs who get 100s of candidate everyday advertising they know everything only to be told by the interviewer that the candidate wasn't good. I am not doubting your skills but the problem is the noise. Most 23 year olds don't know how to read code.

How I overcame it and got a job.

1. I did my Masters so an MNC would hire me. I knew this hack/entry.

2. After getting into the MNC, I worked my ass off and kept applying to jobs focusing on the work I did at the MNC.

3. I got a job at an awesome startup!

And things started changing. Now I get replies to most of my applications.

And automated or copy paste resumes do work but HN crowd might not agree. But most of the industry is still very non HN.

Hope it helps. All the best and keep applying!

ShirsenduK··on Ask HN: What's happening in agricultural technology?
I have lately been exploring agricultural technology as I plan to start farming myself. Here is what I have learnt so far.

1. Yes, its possible but its not as simple as ordering stuff off Amazon. The farmhack.org community is a great place to start. Most of them are existing tools which have been redesigned by farm hackers. http://blog.regehr.org/archives/1446 is an interesting proposition too. But in my interviews with farmers from rural India they said, cost/benefit isn't much for the such aerial reports.

2. One Million Dollars!!! Thats what Jean-Martin Fortier says in his book; The Market Gardener: A Successful Grower's Handbook for Small-Scale Organic Farming. Its a great read as its not just about tech but also market.

ShirsenduK··on Ask HN: Should I learn Bootstrap 3 or 4 at this moment?
Bootstrap 4 with Flexbox! Because thats the future :) I'm using it on a production site; https://www.maplenest.com and its fairly stable.
ShirsenduK··on Ask HN: Best Monitor Around $300 for Dev Work?
I had but then I got a mini display port 1.2 to HDMI 2.0 active converter and that fixed the colours and fineness and best of all runs @ 60Hz
ShirsenduK··on “Dear Microsoft” – Your Friends at Slack
Dear @slackhq,

Please fix your push notification systems as people have to use Skype when Slack cannot get things done! Video/Screensharing should have a checkbox on your product map. Oh but you don’t have them. Damn!

Best,

Your Paying Customer
