Shengbo··on Berlin bans Airbnb from renting apartments to protect affordable housing
Yes but they also have to do something about the shortage of affordable housing. Most EU capitals are quickly becoming unaffordable to the lower and middle classes and people will expect their governments to regulate short-term renting of residential buildings more strictly.
Shengbo··on Prince, Musician and Iconoclast, Has Died at Age 57: The Two-Way
There's usually a bunch of off topic stuff on the front page at any given moment.
Shengbo··on The caffeine curse: why coffee shops have always signalled urban change
It's interesting how long it took for the US to adopt them. I wonder why the coffee shop culture wasn't exported earlier. I wouldn't compare Starbucks to European style cafés though. It's sort of like the McDonald's of coffee shops. Not a good experience if you're looking for quality coffee and a pleasant atmosphere.
Shengbo··on The caffeine curse: why coffee shops have always signalled urban change
Those hipsters.
Shengbo··on The caffeine curse: why coffee shops have always signalled urban change
Yes, as far as I know the very first cafés in Europe opened in the 17th century in Vienna, Paris and London and then spread to Italy and the rest of the Austro-Hungarian empire over the following two centuries.
Shengbo··on The caffeine curse: why coffee shops have always signalled urban change
>I can remember a time (1980's and earlier) when the modern version of the coffee shop didn't exist.

Are you talking about the US here? I'm pretty sure they've been around in Europe and the Middle East for centuries.

Shengbo··on Kite – Programming Copilot
I often Google for trivial syntax when switching back and forth between programming languages. A quick reminder without having to leave the editor window would be great. Also, typos.
Shengbo··on Poor New Yorkers Tend to Live Longer Than Other Poor Americans
Thanks. I don't necessarily see it as being "fat-friendly", they're just trying to prevent discrimination.

The "widening doorways" thing might be a bit too much unless the person in question actually has a medical condition though.

Shengbo··on Poor New Yorkers Tend to Live Longer Than Other Poor Americans
What do you mean? How can a city be "fat-friendly" by policy?
Shengbo··on The sugar conspiracy: sugar—not fat—is the greatest danger to our health
I see, thanks. It'd be interesting to have people take a lab test right before going on a keto diet and then repeating it at fixed intervals to see how it affects the results.
Shengbo··on The sugar conspiracy: sugar—not fat—is the greatest danger to our health
I'm guessing they're downvoting you because you mentioned studies but provided no links, so here's one I found[1].

Shengbo··on The sugar conspiracy: sugar—not fat—is the greatest danger to our health
My grandfather died at a similar age and he's been a smoker for decades. Doesn't make smoking any less harmful in my eyes.
Shengbo··on The sugar conspiracy: sugar—not fat—is the greatest danger to our health
Wouldn't adopting a balanced diet that's reasonably low in carbs plus some exercise achieve the desired effect but without fucking shit up in the process?

I can't imagine going from a sedentary, high-carb, overweight lifestyle to a radical diet(be it keto or whatever else the person chooses) is easy on the body.

Did you get any lab tests done before and after starting the diet? If you did, how did the results compare?

Shengbo··on The Most Popular Cars in American Cities
I totally forgot about gas prices. Looks like some of these trucks can consume >15l/100km. I guess it only makes sense that we don't have them in Europe. Especially with recent emission regulations, downsizing, etc.
Shengbo··on The Most Popular Cars in American Cities
Whats the reason for the percentage of American brands being lower in the Bay Area, NYC, etc.? Do wealthy areas just prefer imports or is there more to it?
Shengbo··on It's a Tesla
I believe what he meant is that it takes 15(to launch the software) + 5.4(0-60) = 20.4 seconds to get from getting into the car to 60 mph.

Shengbo··on I Drove Chevrolet's Bolt
I think they won in the sense that they forced the industry to move towards EVs. The Porsche Mission E just got the green light and I believe Mercedes announced they were releasing 4 new fully electric models in the coming years. I expect more auto makers to do the same now that the Model 3 is going into production, piling up preorders and threatening sales of ICE cars in the 30-40k price range.
Shengbo··on The Secret Tesla Motors Master Plan (2006)
>I would think the median price for vehicles tends to list high as trucks which account for a large number of sales regularly have stickers in that range.

That may be true for the US market but Tesla is selling globally now. Trucks don't sell very well in Europe for example.

Shengbo··on The Secret Tesla Motors Master Plan (2006)
I agree, I wouldn't ever consider buying new unless it was a company lease.
Shengbo··on Model 3 Unveiling [video]
It's just my opinion, but I think the Chevy looks awful compared to the Model 3.

Shengbo··on No patent if invention lies only in computer program, says Indian Patent Office
A lot of things you can get patented are "just math".

Edit: I'm not arguing for patents, but I don't think this particular argument in itself should be sufficient to dismiss a product's eligibility to get one.

Shengbo··on Don't use the greater than sign in programming
That could actually be an interesting linguistics problem. In spoken languages, "between" is usually inclusive unless context suggests otherwise. It can easily be a source of misunderstanding if the context clues are insufficient or the recipient has trouble picking up on them. I wonder if there are any languages that have different words for inclusive/exclusive "between" so people don't have to rely on implicit clues.
Shengbo··on Dear Startups: Here’s How to Stay Alive
I haven't heard any complaints, the humour is on point, the characters are great and it's even more amusing if you have some insight into how ridiculous certain things in real life SV are. This bit is definitely my favorite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJIAOosI6js
