Shekelphile··on I stopped buying new laptops (2020)
Owning a macbook vs owning a framework laptop isn't going to effect climate change in any way. In fact, Apple's track record is that their products generally outlast the competition, even when they do otherwise stupid things like software DRMed screen and battery replacements and soldered SSDs.

It is purely virtue signaling. If you want to do good by the climate and still want a powerful tool there is no better option than a used macbook.

Shekelphile··on I stopped buying new laptops (2020)
If you buy a two year old phone then there's plenty of support left for apple and samsung devices in that time. At least 3-4 years for apple, 2 for samsung.

> I find it mind blowing that people refer to Twitter as "once great" now that it is known that it was essentially a disgusting totalitarian political censorship and propaganda tool for one of the 2 political flavors in the US.

You're delusional. Twitter before the acquisition was extremely politically neutral and gave extremist right wing voices way more leeway than should be socially acceptable. Post-acquisition has turned it into the 'totalitarian political censorship and propaganda tool' that you're describing, for Musk's personal and political interests, which at the time seem to be ultra-far right.

There's definitely a lot games that don't run as well as they do on windows despite being generally playable on linux. It's nice to have a dual boot for games like that even if you play the vast majority of games on the linux side.
Shekelphile··on AMD CPU Use Among Linux Gamers Approaching 70% Marketshare
My experience is that universally my linux gamer friends who own AMD products have worse experiences than I do - they are absolutely usable, but not worth buying at all if your primary purpose for owning a GPU is gaming.

> Black screens & hard freezes are nonexistent. Gaming performance on the Steam Deck and APU is reasonable for the hardware. Proton works better for me with AMD than NVIDIA (which makes sense, after all Valve’s development of it is aimed at the steam deck primarily).

Most likely you are playing games that Valve has already deployed patches/hacks for. Go off the beaten path from Steam and the proton runtime and you will find quickly that AMD is severely buggy.

Black screening is especially common with vega dgpus, can't say if it extends to the igpus are not but if you google 'vega black screen bug linux' you will find hundreds of reddit posts and bug reports about this going back to 2018.

> I'm due an upgrade to my gaming rig core soon, currently running an old 3950X with a 4090.

I have a 3900x and I'll probably just hold onto it forever. New CPUs are faster but are 25%+ more expensive core for core on top of motherboards being 2-3x more expensive than their pre-COVID pricing for less features (specifically I need a second CPU linked pcie slot for a network card, and no affordable AM5 motherboards seem to do 8x/8x lane splits like you could get with trivially affordable AM4 boards).

> AMDs crippling of new game releases by paying to have DLSSv3 support omitted (most recently Jedi Survivor, and looking like Starfield) has completely soured me on the company. I don't feel inclined to support that behaviour financially with my next rig.

This isn't a new trend sadly. It's insanely annoying to boot a game and see only AMD's subpar stuff baked in whereas when you boot a vendor agnostic or nvidia sponsored game you usually get nvidia's stuff alongside amd's. They did it with the RE4 remake recently too, very annoying to be stuck with FSR when the game advertised DLSS 3 support and had it in the pre-release demo.

I'm not even sure why people have this myth that AMD's GPU support is good on linux. Having an upstreamed driver doesn't mean much when it's just as buggy and unstable as the closed drivers were 10-15 years ago. Everyone I know using a modern AMD GPU on Linux evangelize the fuck out of them while simultaneously complaining about constant black screens/hard freezes/poor performance in games/etc. I've never experienced such issues with nvidia and besides the annoyance of having to make sure you have the proprietary blob installed there's no real issues.
Shekelphile··on Twitter Is DDOSing Itself
I'm aware. I'm saying that he clearly isn't beyond bribing SCOTUS to pave the way for him to a presidential campaign in 2028 or even initiating a fascist coup.
Shekelphile··on Twitter Is DDOSing Itself
> The two remaining sites that allow regular people to post and have discussions are being wiped off the internet in time for the next election. By the next US presidential election, there won't be ways to access information that don't go through the "wrong" people first. Hacker News is all that's left, and it's not big enough to be significant.

The 2028 election is more worrying IMO, especially since it seems like Musk is angling to run for president and doesn't seem to mind running despite not legally being able to hold the office. It feels like he views kowtowing to the MAGA crowd and controlling large media platform(s) as essential to that plan.

Shekelphile··on After September 1, 2023, all Gfycat content and data will be deleted
That already feels like the norm tbh. Nearly every imgur link in an old reddit post or chatlog seems to be dead these days.
Shekelphile··on Twitter Is DDOSing Itself
He spent $44 billion to build a platform to attack his own daughter. Beyond just being a bully at that point, IMO.
Shekelphile··on US Supreme Court rules website designer can refuse to serve same-sex couples
You are confusing things here. One liberal supreme court justice (with none of the others being picked by the incumbent administration and instead decided by McConnell and co.) does not make up for the hundreds that have aged/died out of office since the clinton and obama years.
Shekelphile··on US Supreme Court rules website designer can refuse to serve same-sex couples
I'm not sure why states are not just ignoring federal courts at this point. The GOP hasn't allowed democrats to appoint any judges (even when they had majorities in the senate) for over a decade now. There is no reason for blue states to abide at all at this point, and they should just defer to their own state level courts instead. Either that or a 'supreme court in exile' needs to be made to counter this.
Shekelphile··on Ask HN: Is GitHub down?
Pretty much every company has been shown to have fake status pages at this point.
Shekelphile··on Oregon finally legalizes pumping your own gas
In my state auto-pump nozzles are illegal. Have to sit there and hold down the trigger breathing in the fumes the whole time. Really sucks if you're filling up a vehicle with a big tank.
Shekelphile··on Reddit is trying to sow division in mod teams because the protest is working
Bunch of examples here of subs that reopened upon threat of being stripped of head mods or had actual head mods stripped of permissions: https://old.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/comments/14cr2is/alternati...

r/adviceanimals was the first major subreddit to be retaliated against in this way, where an inactive mod used the opportunity to appeal to admins and remove the others.

Shekelphile··on Reddit is trying to sow division in mod teams because the protest is working
That is already happening.
Shekelphile··on Linux on the Xbox 360
There's consumer boards with xbox one and xbox series SoCs out there with the GPU fused off already. They won't ever be hacked, security is tight and the scene essentially doesn't exist anymore.
Shekelphile··on San Francisco Homeowners Lose $260B in Value
It's not a loss of 30% if the 5+ years you have lived there have been trouble free. Just normal depreciation.
Shekelphile··on San Francisco Homeowners Lose $260B in Value
This logic only works if you ignore the fact that housing prices have been juiced even in areas experiencing population decline and economic blight. I live in upstate NY and housing prices have tripled in my town despite no actual growth occurring here in decades, with more entry level jobs evaporating here every few years with local industries continuing the trend of closing up shop.

It's also highly dubious that any land in SF can be considered higher value due to the rampant crime issues. I really don't understand how anyone would want to buy a home or live in one where there a daily risk to waking up to a home invasion, your car being pilfered through, literal human shit on your doorstep, etc. All in a place where cost of living is 2-3x higher than nearly every other part of the country. It's laughable.

Shekelphile··on Tesla Model Y overtakes Corolla to be world’s best-selling car in 2023
> EVs are practically 0-maintenance machines. Unless you need to change your tires... you just don't think about oil changes or motor belts breaking or engine filters clogging and all the other nonsense that breaks in an ICE car.

Until your AC fails in your s/x outside of warranty, or you get unlucky enough to have your Y's heat pump fall apart like thousands of people in cold climates have over the last few years. Both repairs are $5000+ and seem to happen much faster than similar issues in conventional vehicles with belt driven AC compressors.

Shekelphile··on Tesla Model Y overtakes Corolla to be world’s best-selling car in 2023
There's plenty of people driving like it's GTA in their dog-slow base model nissan altimas and ram 2500s, more BEVs isn't gonna change the fact that a large chunk of society are selfish and antisocial.
Shekelphile··on Tesla Model Y overtakes Corolla to be world’s best-selling car in 2023
Prius prime and rav4 prime are a thing.
Shekelphile··on The tiny corp raised $5.1M
I doubt they have even spent $5M on developing ROCm even though it's been a thing for nearly 10 years. AMD is just notoriously stingy about investing in things outside their core business.
Shekelphile··on The tiny corp raised $5.1M
> It's just too easy for anyone to throw together a Supermicro machine with 6x GPUs in it, which is what it sounds like they'll be doing.

HPC compute is well advanced past just slapping GPUs into generic supermicro servers anyway. Without semi-custom hardware and equivalents to nvlink/nvswitch AMD won't ever be competitive in the HPC space.

Shekelphile··on Apple wins antitrust court battle with Epic Games, appeals court rules
there is no roadblock to it besides no developers being interested in doing it, you can sideload anything you want (though you are limited to an absurd degree unless you pay apple $100/yr for a developer license), you can even do things like enable JIT for sideloaded apps so even that limitation doesn't exist for sideloading browsers. several emulators, like dolphin, already have working JITs on ios devices.
Shekelphile··on GitHub Accelerator: our first cohort and what’s next
> I don't share the belief that "non cishet/white" people are unduly denigrated when they achieve success--not more than any other person on average, anyway. In fact, I see quite the opposite: there's tremendous amounts of pride when "non cishet/white" people achieve success.

If that was the case you wouldn't be here to continue doubling down on casting doubt on someone's success.

Shekelphile··on GitHub Accelerator: our first cohort and what’s next
No, they don't. They insinuate that because it's a conveinient dogwhistle - the claim is always the same whenever a non cishet/white person attains any level of success.
Shekelphile··on GitHub Accelerator: our first cohort and what’s next
Treating a trans developer as no different from a cishet developer is not 'wokeness'.
Shekelphile··on GitHub Accelerator: our first cohort and what’s next
> b) why the hell was finding that worth your time

Generally the only reason people dig up a trans person's deadname is for harassment or discrimination.
