Shekelphile··on User returns after 100k-hours ban to continue conversation that got them banned
> That kind of humor emerged from 4chan and co and are a fundamental part of the internet gossip.

That kind of humor emerged from usenet and early SA*. 4chan only exists at all because moot was permabanned from SA.

Shekelphile··on Is Target selling its excess inventory on eBay and Poshmark?
I worked for target 2021-2022 during their massive inventory crunch and selloff. Most of the excess, damaged/returns and recalled product gets sold off to salvage companies for pennies on the dollar by the truckload.
Shekelphile··on Tesla Owners Get Only 64% of EPA Range After Just Three Years: Study
A new tesla won't even get it's EPA range on first drive. It's a well known marketing fraud tesla does that other brands haven't yet begun to participate in.
Shekelphile··on Slack AI Training with Customer Data
It is a bold assumption to think that discord hasn't always been using harvested text/voice/video data to train models.
Shekelphile··on Google workers fired for protesting Israeli contract file NLRB complaint
What? No, it's quite easy to 'square' it actually. Civilian casualties are inevitable when hamas embeds itself into the civilian populace and forces them to stay in the positions they operate from.

Did you have similar outrage when the Russian air force was dropping 1000lb dumb bombs on similarly densely populated cities in Syria from 2015-2017? I guarantee you a lot more civilians died needlessly in places like aleppo and palmyra than Israel has ever 'slaughtered'.

Shekelphile··on Google workers fired for protesting Israeli contract file NLRB complaint
Israel doesn't slaughter civilians. In fact, asymmetric tactics and terror attacks against civilians is constantly perpetrated by hamas (as evidenced on 10/7)
Shekelphile··on Ask HN: How do you decide who/what to vote for?
Right now I vote for the party whose stated goal is not the eradication of a minority group that I am part of.
Shekelphile··on Why Do Men Dominate Chess?
No, I’m not. Your ai generated spam doesn’t pass the smell test. Low grade even by terf standards.

Trans women are women.

Shekelphile··on Why Do Men Dominate Chess?
It looks like you are linking a website that is outright fake or just satire. The first competition listed was won by a cis woman, and lists the woman who placed ninth as should have been first (despite the other two 'below' her finishing second and third retrospectively).

It seems like you are the operator of this website too as you exclusively created your account to post about it.

Shekelphile··on In Cleveland, mushrooms digest entire houses
We are actually in the last 20% of time remaining for life on earth to exist. Multicellular life will likely go extinct within a few hundred million years.
Shekelphile··on Space Camp and the X-Men-Ification of Trans People
I wonder if the people trying to kill us off like this realize how influential trans people have been on the advancement of technology and society in general. A lot of modern amenities people have simply wouldn't exist if a trans person didn't make them.
Shekelphile··on Ex-Twitter Executives Sue Elon Musk for $128M in Severance Pay
I am surprised that only executives are suing. Nobody I know that was laid off from twitter (even the ones who took voluntary severance) has been paid yet.
Shekelphile··on Private company landing on the moon today
Nobody knows the letter of the law in the real world and carveouts like this are meant to appease political opposition and get laws passed, not to be enforceable/usable. It's an effective total ban.
Shekelphile··on Ask HN: What's the best car without undesirable features?
Most fleet vehicles are sold as normal vehicles to consumers as well. I don't know where to find them, just saw the normal base trim versions of those fleet cars listed on normal used car sites. There's tons of them out there: chevy spark/sonic, ford fiesta, mitsubishi mirage, nissan versa, WT trim f150/silverado/ram 1500 etc.

If you want to buy new and don't mind forking over more money than most would consider reasonable you could probably buy a brand new ford escape interceptor or tahoe ppv which is pretty much guaranteed to be as barebones and 'dumb' on the inside since they're meant to be converted to police vehicles. Don't think many dealers would order them for individuals but if you search around there's probably some out there that will.

Shekelphile··on Ask HN: What's the best car without undesirable features?
You won't find a new one. If you want a car made newer than the last 10 years you would need to look at models sold into fleets which would limit you to basically work trucks/vans and base model ford and GM sedans and subcompacts.

Last time I was car shopping base trim ford fiesta's were under $10k and came with a manual transmission, no power windows, no power locks, no cruise control and a standard double DIN radio. Made less than five years ago.

Shekelphile··on SEC has not approved Bitcoin ETFs [fixed]
Why not? Musk has a history of direct personal attacks against people who criticize him (he just recently purged a bunch of people from twitter today, no less) as well as a history of directly pump and dumping shitcoins for him and his crony's personal gain.

It seems so likely that it should probably be assumed that this is the case imo.

Shekelphile··on Minimum Wage Clock
Vote with your wallet has never worked. Even the most basic economic principles like supply and demand have been shown to be broken in the last few years. Countless businesses have begun rent-seeking with quarterly price increases, opaque markups hidden until it's time to swipe your card, outright theft from customers and employees, etc. Even if they alienate a few people, there's always more ignorant/stupid people who won't research before they make a purchase and who will go along with whatever is done to them anyway.

And it's compounded with things like housing and food. You can't go without either unless you want to live a completely undignified existence and with a vastly shortened lifespan.

Another example to throw in there is indoor smoking too. People never stopped going out to eat or to bars when you were forced to sit in a thick haze of second hand smoke, and even if you did avoid it there were hundreds of other people who didn't care. I can't imagine how things would be if the push to get rid of it happened in more recent times rather than 20-25 years ago. Red states certainly would have never banned it and there would be droves of people going out intentionally to force you to inhale their second hand smoke to own the libs.

Shekelphile··on Minimum Wage Clock
> But why take away their freedom to do so?

Minimum wage laws don't do that. You're completely within your rights to volunteer your time for no compensation at all if you wish.

Shekelphile··on Minimum Wage Clock
Maybe for people who already owned assets and had a stable living situation before 2020. If you're renting and had to buy anything expensive like a car in the last few years then your costs have more than doubled.
Shekelphile··on Minimum Wage Clock
$12-15 today is effectively lower than the federal minimum was 4 years ago. It's a completely disingenuous argument to make that it's acceptable to pay people that little.
Shekelphile··on Blueprint health protocol
There is a very weird lack of interest in slowing down or reversing aging in the scientific/medical community in general. To me it seems like it should be a top priority. Life is extremely short and extending our lives shouldn't be a terribly hard feat given there are plenty of biologically immortal and long lived organisms all over our planet.
Shekelphile··on Blueprint health protocol
> The Blueprint health protocol may end up giving people with healthy bodies but an aging brain, so they will be able to live many years with dementia (because the body is otherwise healthy).

Your brain being damaged by dementia will absolutely ruin your body in a very short amount of time. In the late stages your brain can no longer perform involuntary functions and you would literally need to be fed by IV and on a respirator to stay alive.

Shekelphile··on T-Mobile introduce fines from Jan 1 for "Code of Conduct" violations
Wouldn't really call it dangerous, ISPs have always cut off people from service doing illegal/unethical things. The weird part is that they're putting a price on it now... implying that it's OK to use their pipe to engage in crime and do morally dubious stuff like swindle old people out of their money as long as they get a cut too.
Shekelphile··on San Francisco’s rent prices have never returned to pre-2020 levels
> Also not sure what bias you’re talking about.

You explicitly said the state which has laws on the books banning teaching that chattel slavery was a bad thing is a good place to raise a child in.

Shekelphile··on San Francisco’s rent prices have never returned to pre-2020 levels
> Like I’m not even sure what language you’re supposed to use.

Economic migrant, most of the people 'fleeing' venezuela are elites, not people who were actually victims of the economy collapsing.

Shekelphile··on San Francisco’s rent prices have never returned to pre-2020 levels
Using loaded language like refugee to refer to venezuela in itself gives away your biases.
Shekelphile··on San Francisco’s rent prices have never returned to pre-2020 levels
You would rather raise a child in a state like Florida where the government has made it illegal not to glorify the confederacy and chattel slavery?

That is a very odd choice. I get that the bay has a crime/homeless/CoL problem but fleeing to a place with much of the same issues in its own cities while also being one of the worst parts of the country culturally outside of then isn’t any better, IMO.

Shekelphile··on My cat water fountain comes with a spicy USB power adapter
Because the EU banned barrel connectors.
Shekelphile··on NASA study finds life-sparking energy source and molecule at Enceladus
We still can’t see the atmosphere of the majority of exoplanets. Can’t get around it unless we build a telescope thousands of times bigger than anything else or we make some incomprehensible breakthrough in optics. If we could we would detect life on another planet within a matter of a few hours of telescope time most likely.

I find the entire idea that life could only exist on earth farcical. A lot of people in this thread don’t seem to understand that we can’t directly image many exoplanets to begin with and that we haven’t even been trying to find life on other planets and moons in our own solar system, it has in fact been suppressed every time credible circumstantial evidence of life is found (Viking lander experiments and methane on mars both come to mind)

Shekelphile··on Beeper Mini is back
> It’s not fair to level these sorts of potential/speculative security concerns at Beeper Mini when iMessage’s first-party implementation has way worse problems that are actually documented.

Apple has a proven track record of not handing over all your messages to russian and chinese intelligence, something that beeper is almost certainly doing (as their business model revolves entirely around MITMing your email and chat)

You sound like a fifth columnist.
