ShakataGaNai··on Apple TV, now with more Tailscale
This is very cool, and very useful.

For the average, non-technical user, Apple TV as an exit node for other device while traveling is super cool.

But for someone who is out of the country for a duration, it's also super handy. Netflix knows all the popular VPN providers and ban hammers them on a regular basis. But being able to use my Apple TV to watch my normal Netflix (or whomever) from any other country... because they think I'm at home? Super win.

ShakataGaNai··on Apple iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max
It charges via USB-C, it does USB 3 data if you have the Pro.

> Now you can connect USB‑C gear like thumb drives, fast external storage, 4K displays, and microphones. And you can charge Apple Watch or AirPods from your iPhone.9

> Charge up to 50% in around 30 minutes10 with the 20W USB‑C Power Adapter (sold separately).

Seems like totally bog standard USB-C, just like the rest of their devices.

ShakataGaNai··on Apple iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max
Yea, but you have USB3 high speed, record pro-res directly onto, external storage.

So you can spend $100 on a 1TB external drive (rather than $100 on another 128gb of internal storage) and you're way better off. If you're use case is 4k60 ProRes, this makes WAY more sense than recording locally.

ShakataGaNai··on 9/11 in Realtime
Something similar from my side. Was in college, on the West Coast, and had no early classes so I was still asleep. It wasn't until the girlfriend's family called her and woke her up - that we found out something was wrong. They were on the East Coast and her father was flying that day (just ended up grounded and stuck for a few days). But I don't think we woke up until 8 or 9am PST, Noon East... so by the time we were awake it was "over". Totally surreal to wake up to something like that.

I don't think anyone at the entire College did anything but watch the News channels, even though there wasn't anything "new", for the next 2 days.

ShakataGaNai··on Grindr Loses Almost Half Its Staff on 2-Day RTO Requirement
Yes. I get the same. Infinite CAPTCHA. It's done that on several computers now. Even in private browsing mode, clear cookies, clear cache.
ShakataGaNai··on This page exists only if someone is looking at it
Fascinating experiment in ephemerality. If a page is popular, more people will see/share it amongst themselves... but as soon as it loses interest... the content is gone.

Also a high potential for content to be gone before it can be indexed.

ShakataGaNai··on No way in or out of Burning Man after storm
The article seems to be reporting the facts in a fairly reasonable manner. We have friends who are there and they told us this exact same information: They've been told to conserve, no porta-potty cleaning is coming anytime soon, they may not make it out until Wednesday.

The article doesn't even say they are running out of supplies, other than the organizers have told people to conserve.

ShakataGaNai··on A Critical Analysis of the What3Words Geocoding Algorithm
I can understand overlooking homophones, but plurals was just stupid.

Someone came up with a clever idea, and clearly they had some math/cipher skills. But w3w clearly had no linguists on staff. Even Wordle did a better job filtering their word list.

Though with some of the words being so lengthy and linguistically complex, they would have been better moving to a four word system and assuring simpler words that was better filtered.

ShakataGaNai··on Why do shared hospital rooms not violate HIPAA?
Because health privacy is not ALWAYS HIPAA. In fact, it's almost never HIPAA... except for the fact that some Karen's learned the term HIPAA and now they think it's always HIPAA [1].

Unless it's digital health record-related, then it's probably HIPAA.

If you're really curious, you can read HIPAA [2] and HITECH [3]. Combined, they are about 600 pages of dense dense legalese.

ShakataGaNai··on FCC refuses to scrap rule requiring ISPs to list every monthly fee
Excellent news. When the ISP's claim it's "too hard" to do, you know something is wrong. Either the ISP's are lying (duh) or the taxes and fees structure is just messed up... or someone is trying to slip in bullshit charges.

Our world needs more transparency. It breeds competition... and hopefully bankrupts a few corrupt corporations.

ShakataGaNai··on EV Chargers Should Be Dumber
> Installing NEMA 14-50 outlets everywhere could put the EV revolution on the road sooner rather than later.

No. No it won't. It's helpful TODAY for homes and office buildings and hotels. Destinations. But as the author said himself, it was limited to below 10kw/hr. That means your average Tesla will require roughly 7 hours for a full charge, or 20 hours for your hummer EV. It's unlikely you'll need a FULL charge, but if you're at work for 8 hours, that's not a problem. Or at home sleeping, not an issue. But for any long distance driving? No dice.

We *need* fast charging. We need smart chargers that can handle multiple cars intelligently until we get to a point where battery and capacitor technology is far enough along to rival gas.

The average consumer doesn't want to futz with a J1772 adapter to get free EV charging when on an errand - let alone tinker about with a dozen adapters, plug ends and whatnot. Now if someone is an EV enthusiast, no problem. They probably have all the adapters and more with them all the time (I do).

At the end of the day, the 14-50 argument is a bit like saying "Everyone should carry their own fuel pump with themselves. That'd be so much easier than all these fancy gas station pumps. Just let people dangle the hose directly into the tank and pump it out themselves." Oh.. and just as dangerous.

ShakataGaNai··on Can Vines Speed Urban Cooling? – UC Davis
The basic concept seems fairly obvious to me. At least on a small scale.

My house is a masonry exterior with a mostly southern exposure. It soaks up the sun and keeps the house very very warm late into the evening... which is not a helpful feature when it's 90F every day of the summer. My plan was to do basically what they described here. Setup some trellis 4 ft or so some the house, and plant some fast-growing vines.

Anything to shade the house will obviously be beneficial from a cooling perspective. The vines are mostly to reduce the cost of shading and increase the aesthetics.

Now what plants are the best balance of low water usage, high growth, low maintenance? That's a good question and I look forward to seeing what UCDavis comes up with.

ShakataGaNai··on Common mistakes in salary negotiation
> I think it is much faster and easier to ask what you're looking for up front.

That assumes you know what you want and know what's reasonable/fair for the job and area.

Most people don't know. Even if they've worked a similar job in the area, doesn't mean they know what the current going rate is. Once when applying for a job I asked for what was basically my current salary plus $20,000. The hiring manager said something to the lines of "Oh, we can do better than that" and ended up hiring me at my ask plus ANOTHER $40,000. I had way undervalued myself and wasn't up to the moment on the latest in pay rates.

Needless to say I was lucky and that person was an excellent manager. But most people will not be so lucky and most managers are not that amazing.

ShakataGaNai··on Ask HN: Where to find open-source house plans?
Also, don't forget local building codes. They vary a lot from location to location. You might theoretically be able to spec out a house that complies with most building codes, but it would probably look really funny and be hilariously expensive.

A roof pitched for heavy snow with storm shutters for hurricanes would stand out like a sore thumb in Arizona.

ShakataGaNai··on Flipping the model presents a new way to treat sleep apnoea
Yup. This was my experience, more or less. I was lucky enough to do an "at home" test, and so I wasn't given whatever they had on-hand. But when I was prescribed a CPAP the adventure began...

First the insurance adventure. They wanted to rent me a machine at rates that qualify at rates that would violate the geneva convention for war crimes. $327 for the 1st month. $50/mo for the next 10 months. Then I'd be eligible to buy the unit for some unspecified price. Total of AT LEAST $827 in rental fees PLUS whatever the sale cost was. Told them to fluff off and bought a top-of-the-line unit online for $499.

Did my research and got the mask that had the best reviews for someone like myself.

In advance, I had done a little research about CPAP's but I had no realidea what to expect. When I met with the sleep doctor, when he prescribed me the CPAP, he asked if I had any questions. I told him directly, "I don't really know much about them, what should I know?". You'd think whatever spiel he gave me would be a solid basis for life with a CPAP? Hah.

Did my own research on how to get comfortable and used to using it. First night I use it, I wake up in the morning and my chest is ON FIRE. Fortunately I didn't jump directly to heart attack, which apparently a lot of people do. Turns out my chest muscles were just sore - super duper common. A side effect almost everyone has the first few times they use a CPAP. Guess what my doctor DIDN'T Tell me about? And that about summarizes how useful my doc was.

My Primary Care was way more useful than the sleep doctor. But I never tolerated the CPAP well. Because I'm technical, I had OSCAR pulling data the very first night. Reviewed it every day, learned how to get into the CPAP service menu and make adjustments to the system. Still had problems with it and eventually gave up using it. (Note: I did have heated and humidified, played with those settings a lot. Tried several different masks. Putting the mask on or keeping it on wasn't the issue, my body would just freak out in the middle of the night - every night, when wearing it. Even after weeks of trying. My sleep was worse with the mask than without.)

You know who I never heard from again? The sleep doc. It's been 3 years (almost to the day) since I got the CPAP and they've never contacted me. Could I have reached out to them? Yes, but what good were they? They didn't set me up for success. They didn't follow up even one. Their use was to write me a prescription and that's it.

ShakataGaNai··on Private jet came ‘within 100 feet’ of colliding with Southwest plane, NTSB says
Critical staffing shortages at ATC https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/critical-...

It's a tough job that typically requires intense focus and rotation very very very regularly. Like 20mn to 2 hours "on frequency" at a time, depending on the airport and how busy it is. Working people long and hard, they are bound to make mistakes eventually.

ShakataGaNai··on Private jet came ‘within 100 feet’ of colliding with Southwest plane, NTSB says
Yea. The incoming jet was on a 5-mile final. Being a small jet it's "slow" so that 5-mile final is 3-5 minutes. You can see 19:04Z when the Southwest jet get's the "line up and wait". 19:07Z is the missed approach. If ATC has given them the departure clearance relatively quickly, there would have been no issue as Southwest would have hit the gas and been long gone... but ATC didn't.

This is not uncommon for aircraft to get on the runway and take off while another aircraft is on final. If you want a good video of how this more typically works (and sometimes doesn't work), here's one from an incident at SFO about 2 months ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrRGde5J8mo

And another from SFO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4cewwhcL5c

In both the SFO cases, they got the "go around" from ATC much earlier and no one got too close to each other. Keeping in mind that SFO is extremely busy and lands two parallel runways at the same time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YsKhZm78DuY

ShakataGaNai··on Got called to a professor’s office after a complaint his SPARC4 was running slow
Every group of people who's remotely decently specialized... will get very smug assholes. I've met IT people who just want to help you get your shit done, and those who look down at you for being a "stupid user". Also I've met Doctors whom think they are god, and Doctor's who want to be a partner in your health journey and are totally non-judgemental (at least outwardly).

I'm sure you'd find the same in any similar field. Engineers. Pilots. Mechanics. Nurses.

And yes, everyone looks at the world from their personally centric view of the world. It's the only way we, as humans, know how. After all, how would you get to your oh-so-important job if not for the road engineer, or the mechanic who built your car, or the city designer who designed the routes that you use every day.

Some are more aware of main character syndrome [1] than others... and some are just less assholes than others.

ShakataGaNai··on A forthcoming collapse of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation
Part of the challenge of this climate information is that it's so bloody complicated. Yes, Nature is doing a scientific write-up, but even reading the abstract all I get is "severe impacts on the climate in the North Atlantic region". What does that mean? Ok, well, why don't I at least look up the AMOC in the first place.

Quick dash over to wikipedia [1] and I find out that...

> The Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) is part of a global thermohaline circulation in the oceans and is the zonally integrated component of surface and deep currents in the Atlantic Ocean.

While I am not a scientist, I consider myself fairly well-read and not an idiot. But when the first sentence of a Wikipedia article needs an ELI5 translation by ChatGPT... you know you're in for a reading adventure.

(But by the 3rd paragraph Wikipedia has a relatively understandable "what if this goes wrong" breakdown)

ShakataGaNai··on Show HN: I built a transit travel time map
SF Bay Area map is somewhat lacking of about half the BART system (SF to Antioch by BART is less than 90mn, but doesn't show at all. Same for Dublin). Also everything North and East of Berkley is cut off, and most of San Jose is missing. As is everything in the North Bay. SMART, County Connection, Marin Transit, SOLTrans are all listed by no data shows up.
ShakataGaNai··on Government URLs that don't end in .gov
I remember back in the day when the highschool website & email was: school.district.k12.ca.us . Basically no one uses those because they were too long and hard to remember. My old school district doesn't use the higher level, the school doesn't use the full name. In fact, they don't even resolve in DNS anymore. Some districts now have the schools under their new domain, some schools do their own thing.
ShakataGaNai··on Maker Faire Bay Area Returns
Ah. Makes total sense. Shall be interesting and exciting to see how it goes. Hopefully they can get a good set of makers to exhibit. With only three months notice I wonder how many people will be available, especially those whom might be coming from farther away.
ShakataGaNai··on Maker Faire Bay Area Returns
That's uh... an unusual choice of locations. HOWEVER, you can take the Ferry from SF to Mare Island https://sanfranciscobayferry.com/

Two weekends is another interesting choice. There are going to be a lot of people, I suspect, who don't want/can't to setup or leave their setups for 2 weekends in a row.

But I'm totally excited, and thrilled it's going to be in 3 months and not an announcement of something next year.

ShakataGaNai··on Ask HN: Archive Bot on HN Submissions
You do what you want with the news feed. Not much difference in taking the new articles and posting them to twitter or another social network (which has been done before). In all likelihood someone is doing the same or similar already, but don't let that stop you.
ShakataGaNai··on Show HN: PFAS.report – Measure the forever chemicals in your blood via Quest
Well $400 for them to order the test for you, then however much for quest to actually do the test.
ShakataGaNai··on Show HN: PFAS.report – Measure the forever chemicals in your blood via Quest
So the "what should I do?" was the big question.

Even in your OP, you said you didn't know what to do about it. Neither does the website say much other than basically "lawyer". If there is something I can do to help me, then there is a purpose to the test. This chelation you mentioned.

But again, this should be a "See a doctor first" situation. What are the risks of chelation? Is it safer for me to have PFAS than go through chelation?

The lawyers ( https://www.pintas.com/pfas-class-action-lawsuit/can-pfas-be... ) say there is nothing I can do. So I should sue.

The news says there might be a way soon ( https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/new-way-destroy-p... ) to get rid of PFAS, but nothing about from the human body.

At least the EPA has some suggestions about how to reduce your risk: https://www.epa.gov/pfas/meaningful-and-achievable-steps-you...

ShakataGaNai··on The hidden cost of air quality monitoring
Interesting. I did more research and there isn't a ton out in the public domain, but it looks to be that the USN and others are using MonoEthanolAmine (MEA) as a regenerative CO2 scrubber. MEA

>Weeks et al. (1960) reported that volunteers who smelled MEA vapor described the odor as ammoniacal, musty, or foreign; some volunteers were unable to characterize the odor.

> Ethanolamine is a colorless, viscous liquid with an odor reminiscent of ammonia.

Ammonia is a lot of what "cat piss" smells of, so that tracks. Thanks! That was really interesting to read about!

That's fair. So like any other testing, this is only useful for a small population, and you should consult your doctor first.
