Shadowed_··on Waymo says can't avoid bike lanes because riders want to be dropped off in them
How many of those drunk drivers get actually fined?
Shadowed_··on Waymo says can't avoid bike lanes because riders want to be dropped off in them
Or they could fine them. And increase fine for each repetition so rich can't just pay to be jerks.
Shadowed_··on Tell HN: Happy New Year
Happy New Year from Serbia.

2025 was bad in best way and good in worst way... Our government is increasingly autocratic in last decade to almost straight dictatorship but last year was year of protests that started cornering government. That led to increased oppression. It's worse for both sides but it's going in good direction albeit slowly. Spent 2025 in dozens of protests, rode bicycle across the country with students to raise awareness, was surrounded with young, great and positive people. Breathed tear gas and got beaten by police. But never felt more alive.

2026: I hope this government is done and gone in this year. Freedom is enough to get in a year.

Shadowed_··on Kagi Hub Belgrade
Milion, not milions :) OK, a bit over 1M. I also don't think it is about geopolitics. It's more about nostalgia (owner is from Belgrade) and marketing. Based on their location, it looks more like marketing than practicality. It's dead center of downtown, almost everyone would have to commute trough heavy traffic. Anywhere in New Belgrade would be more practical (but less prestigious). And that's if you really want to be in Belgrade. Otherwise, Novi Sad is probably better.
Shadowed_··on .NET MAUI is coming to Linux and the browser
Beside already mentioned, there is OpenSilver[1]. Supports Silvelight and WPF. Renders to DOM+WASM. They are also planning support for MAUI.

Shadowed_··on Ask HN: With trust in Firefox gone, is Chrome-ish the only option?
Without going into "trust in Firefox gone" part (others will), there are FF forks that are privacy focused so Chrome-based browsers are not only option.
Shadowed_··on I Waited 10B Cycles and All I Got Was This Loading Screen
Firefox 115, tab takes 9.3MB with adblock disabled and Enhanced Tracking protection also disabled. No problem with scrolling or right-clicking. Or any other kind of problem.
Shadowed_··on It's not just obesity. Drugs like Ozempic will change the world
Not without but with reduced appetite.
Shadowed_··on One Square Minesweeper
I don't know for sure, but they probably didn't plant it at first and later it was simpler to move mine elsewhere than to change the way mines are generated.
Shadowed_··on Show HN: I removed politics from Twitter with AI
Firefox. Sorry for harsh comment but I'm increasingly annoyed by Chrome only approach on the Internet.
Shadowed_··on Show HN: I removed politics from Twitter with AI
"Download on Chrome". OK, whatever, bye.
Shadowed_··on Exercise May Be the Most Potent Medical Intervention Ever Known
From evolutionary point, you adapt for what gets you survive and reproduce. Survival has two main components: physical survival (not being killed/maimed too much) and energy (not starving to death). On energy part, you have positive (food) and negative (base metabolism that keeps you alive and physical activity). You can't do much about base metabolism but you can develop love for food (primarily sugar and fat as main source of energy) and hate to physical activity. However, here comes physical survival. For it you have to have activity to avoid predators, to find/catch food and to build shelter. So, in conclusion, from evolutionary standpoint, you hate activity so you don't do it needlessly but your body is adapted to be good at it for when you really have to.
Shadowed_··on The surprising cause of fasting's regenerative powers
> After mice had abstained from food

Yeah, right, mice abstained from food. Mice don't abstain from food. You didn't feed them!

Shadowed_··on Show HN: I created quick and simple file converter and resizer – Converay
Seems nice and simple. I like it.

Here are some suggestions: -On Privacy Policy page, you have following: "All image conversions and resizing happen right on your own device". Image? What about video? I mean, I know, I checked but it's undefined. I would just go with "All conversions and...". -Similarly, "We don't process or store any of your converted files on our servers". What about original files? Again, I would go with just "any of your files". -Add support for pasting file or image (like copied from another program or screenshot etc.). -When comparing images, you might add two additional "modes" of comparing: 1. images are one over another and you can use "slider" to reveal/show one or the other (i don't know name of that, but you've probably already seen it). 2. One is over another and on a button click (or key press) they are switched. This is useful for very similar images of same size (like with different degree of compression). Fast switching between them lets your brain pick up difference.

I hope this helps.

Shadowed_··on Firefox Sidebar and Vertical tabs: try them out
I don't care much about vertical tabs but what I want from tabs is automatic grouping by site. I'm surprised nobody made this. I know there are extension supporting grouping but i have never seen any that automatically groups by website.

I can't say for them, but towel is good heat insulator and can keep bottle content cold. I use it often for that reason (either towel or other clothes that's already in backpack).
Shadowed_··on Ask HN: What are some unpopular technologies you wish people knew more about?
All of this applies to regular bikes even more :) Specially the last one.
Shadowed_··on Ask HN: What are the most interesting takes on Generative AI you've come across?
Bing Chat does that. It searches internet, goes through results and extracts information to generate answer. Also, gives references as links so you can consider them (filtered) search results.
Shadowed_··on De-crufted Windows 11 coming to Europe soon
What you are talking about is not uninstalling. It's disabling. Uninstalling should remove application.
Shadowed_··on Reasons Windows Is Going in the Wrong Direction
I want to write Windows native apps (and I do).
Shadowed_··on When Robots Take the Wheel: What Happens to Our Sense of Purpose?
My job/work doesn't define me. I have other interests and do other stuff that I like doing and would do even if AI could do them better. So, if AI would replace me at work and (as seem assumed by OP) financial side is not relevant I would just have more time to do what I want so in that regard I welcome it.
Shadowed_··on A New App: TranscribeMe
Which languages are supported?
Shadowed_··on Ask HN: How does copy/paste work on Windows?
When you copy something, application can put data in multiple formats on clipboard. When you paste, application may or may not recognize some of those formats and will choose which one (if any) to use. In your example MS Word will store at least two formats. One is plain text and one is formatted. Which one is used depends on destination application (where you paste).

Others already recommended software that will let you see what's currently on the clipboard. In the past, Windows had application for that.

Shadowed_··on Ask HN: What are household items that can be repaired but people often replace?
Similarly, I use Parker's shavette[1] (I believe that's proper word in English). It's like straight razor but with interchangeable blades (same blades as for safety razor). Also, shaving cream and brush instead of canned foam (better and cheaper). After initial cost of about 50€, yearly cost is about 10€ for blades, cream and aftershave. Shavette could last virtually for a life and brush probably ~15 years (trying to extrapolate from mine which is about 8 years old).

Which is about the same what would Skynet say :)
Shadowed_··on Idiot Proof Git
Nothing is idiot proof. Only more or less idiot resistant.
Shadowed_··on Ask HN: How would you design an alternative Twitter

Shadowed_··on Ask HN: What is your fav “I can't believe in 2022 this still doesn't work right”
Things that could help: -Scan as black&white (grayscale) and save as such (8bit instead of color which is 24bit) -Increase contrast so background is pure(r) white instead of varying grays -OCR and save as docx/pdf/txt with actual text instead of image of text.
