SethTro··on Haters
> [1] There are of course some people who are genuine frauds. How can you distinguish between x calling y a fraud because x is a hater, and because y is a fraud? Look at neutral opinion. Actual frauds are usually pretty conspicuous. Thoughtful people are rarely taken in by them. So if there are some thoughtful people who like y, you can usually assume y is not a fraud.

I don't think that "some thoughtful people who like y" is good enough. There have been big "frauds" in the tech space (and so many in the finance space) were it took years for public opinion to catch up with their actions (Theranos, WeWorks, Epstien and MIT labs) despite some people (Matt levine, John Carreyrou) knowing they weren't above board these people and companies were defended (or not even questioned) by media coverage and big name personalities.

SethTro··on The Factorization of RSA-240
a 1024-bit RSA number is ~5000 times harder (each additional 5.5 digits doubles the difficulty[1])

[1] https://www.mersenneforum.org/showpost.php?p=531861&postcoun...

SethTro··on The Factorization of RSA-240
I agree, this was 3x faster than expected.

Note: Factoring RSA-240 only took 900 core-years the additional 3100 core-years were on the discrete log.

RSA 240 is 8 digits longer, it takes ~2x as much work for each 5.5 additional digits so this should have taken 2.7x as much compute.

SethTro··on Rock climbing and the economics of innovation
I loved this article.

One other aspect I think it omitted, likely to balance brevity with scope, is about standard deviations.

When you only have the most rich and privileged doing a sport (e.g. travelling to summit mountains) the "best" will be selected from a relatively small pool of candidates. As an activity gains popularity, and as more people have the means to pursue it, the pool of people for "best" grows and it's no surprise that the max of the distribution increases.

There world's population has grown 2x since 1957 when El Capitan was first submitted. The number of people doing fitness in their free time, I'd suspect is up 10x or 100x. This is double true for activities like Chess or Olympic sports where nation states have started searching for talent in wider and wider ways.

SethTro··on Investigating sources of PII used in Facebook’s targeted advertising [pdf]
> Fig. 6. In the privacy settings the user can decide who can look their profile up using the provided email address and phone number. The most restrictive option available is “Friends”. We find that even when the user sets the PII visibility to “Only me” and searchability to “Friends”, the advertisers can still use that bit of information for targeting.

> 4.3.5 PII obtained without user’s knowledge ... Facebook could learn users’ PII from their friends would be by scanning friends’ contact databases, linking contacts to existing Facebook accounts, and then augmenting the Facebook accounts with any additional PII found in the contacts database ... We found that the previously-unused phone number became targetable in 36 days, 13 showing that it had indeed been linked to the corresponding author’s account without their knowledge. Making this situation worse, the matched phone number was not listed on the account’s profile, nor in the “Download Your Information” archive obtained from Facebook [5]; thus the target user in this scenario was provided no information about or control over how this phone number was used to target them with ads.

SethTro··on Stricken Russian Nuke Sub Crew Prevented ‘Planetary Catastrophe’
The article mentions how this sub can operate up to 6,000M underwater and throws out this juicy bit > The craft reportedly was used to target undersea communications and other cables.

I doubt it's more than speculation but...

I believe it's in the order of $5M + 2 weeks to fix cables breaks near the shore and >$10M + 8 weeks to fix them in the middle of the ocean which sounded like a lucrative opportunity for blackmail

> The operation targeted suspects who: (1) produce, distribute, receive and possess child pornography; (2) engage in online enticement of children for sexual purposes; (3) engage in the sex trafficking of children; and (4) travel across state lines or to foreign countries and sexually abuse children.

SethTro··on A world of hurt after GoDaddy, Apple, and Google misissue 1M certificates
Seems like a lot of hand wringing over nothing, security is done with huge factors of safety (moving to 256 bit keys when no one had ever broken a 128 or even 96 bit key). It's hard to imagine that 1,2, or even a quarter of the bits couldn't be zero-ed.

> it’s easy to think that a difference of 1 single bit would be largely inconsequential when considering numbers this big. In fact, he said, the difference between 263 and 264 is more than 9 quintillion.

SethTro··on Taxing Uber and Lyft rides is L.A's latest plan to free up congested roads
This is very hard to implement; How do you amortize startup costs (building the roads, buying new paving trucks) vs maintenance costs (raw cement, human, cost @ year 1, cost @ year 10, cost to replace the system after X years).

Do you penalize users/tax payers who have a lower use and less scaled systems? (e.g. should it cost more to mail my grandmother a letter because her post office is less at scale than mine?)

Do you increase the costs if some of your users leave (and risk even more attrition)?

This has been investigated in depth with schools and local businesses. Gov gives them a sweetheart deal with the hope that they contribute back and as the deal get's less good (and Gov starts ramping taxes to deal with paying infrastructure costs) businesses leave. For me the natural conclusion is the government has to provide some balancing (rain day funds, progressive taxes, ...)
