SentientOctopus··on My Struggle with Doom Scrolling
Fully agree. I've been searching, in vain, for sites that just give me fascinating/interesting science/tech/..., and failed to find anything that doesn't get me in a negative spiral.

Would love to be proven wrong with an example :)

SentientOctopus··on Ask HN: Great maker projects for 8th grade kids and above?
That sums up the internet for me, constant feeling of not doing enough to get your kids ahead and personally not amounting to anything because everything has been done better than you can do it.

SentientOctopus··on Ask HN: Life-changing purchases since 2020? (Under $100 and under $1000)
Never heard of them, temperature control sounds amazing. How is this product from a privacy perspective? Is the data kept local or is it some cloud service that tracks all metrics?
SentientOctopus··on PineNote Community Edition: Preorder coming soon
I was quite disappointed with the pinnetime watch tbh.

I bought 2 watches, the button of broke on one of them after a month and a week, just out of warranty. Both watches get their time fully reset when out of battery, which is after a couple of days.

I really love the concept and applaud the effort and time people have put into this, but just wish the hardware was a bit better.

I have to agree, I'm tired of getting baited into looking at these projects.
SentientOctopus··on Mozilla names new CEO as it pivots to data privacy
I'm also an ex Mozilla employee and I 100% agree. Mitchell is a great human being and I respect her immensely!
SentientOctopus··on A famous climate scientist is in court, with big stakes for attacks on science
I was talking to a friend a couple of days ago who believes climate change is all wrong science and he brought up that "the guy who 'invented' the hockey curve is being sued because it is wrong".

It doesn't matter whether he wins, the damage is done and now his children believe it is wrong science... That's the damage...

SentientOctopus··on The Invisible Screen – An E-Paper Smart Display
I wouldn't put it that strongly, but I tend to agree. With the amount of almost daily news/leaks/... it should be a no brainer to not use these advertising platforms made by advertising companies IF you are tech savvy. It is hard for others as they have to give up some convenience. And to the person calling you 'sad', I find it hard not to be when people react that way.

SentientOctopus··on Does HN know any good tools to share stuff between Windows/iOS/OS X?
Not sure if this covers your use case, but I use https://syncthing.net/ to synchronize folders between all my devices. Highly recommended.

No maps/location, but you could use a different app for that.

SentientOctopus··on Ask HN: People who work in an office, what equipment are you provided with?
~$6b revenue tech company: We can pick up a used chair (2 choices) and a monitor. We get $50 per month to cover the rest (internet, electricity, office setup, ...).
SentientOctopus··on Bruegel the Elder’s “Big Fish Eat Little Fish” (1556)
"It is the way of the world, Baldrick. The abused always kick downwards. I am annoyed, and so I kick the cat, the cat pounces on the mouse, and finally, the mouse --bites you on the behind."

"And what do I do?"

"Nothing. You are last in God's great chain. Unless there's an earwig around here you'd like to victimize."

- Sir Edmund Blackadder

SentientOctopus··on Facebook's reputation is so bad that they must pay more to hire, retain talent
Corporations might not, but the people working on the hiring team might. I would.
