SentientNo4··on Game publishers respond to Stop Killing Games claim it curtails developer choice
It's time you stop telling people how to enjoy things.
SentientNo4··on Steam Now Offers 90-Minute Game Trials
The first game to offer a trial is Dead Space which uses Denuvo. Game is also published by EA which would be at the tail of my list of consumer friendly publishers.
SentientNo4··on Disputing a Parking Fine with ChatGPT
In a world where the de-facto language is English but most people are not native speakers, it's actually really hard to compose official or neutral sounding messages. I can navigate colloquial conversations in English pretty well, but I find it difficult when I have to reply to business or clerical emails where I need to sound neutrally professional, whether because I lack vocabulary or because my own native language idiosyncrasies slip in and make the message awkward to native speakers, something that an automated AI like this would eliminate. So I would say you just have a very limited view of the world outside your own small universe.

SentientNo4··on I hate what video games have become
> Cosmetic items are not just visual though. They are real elements in the game.

Yes, I really hate this argument that cosmetics are not gameplay. Visuals are a huge part of what makes a game, no one would be happy if games shipped without textures and shaders and people would have to pay to unlock them.

SentientNo4··on Welcome to the Old Internet Again
> People also got lazy, why bother hosting your own website when you can just upload to Instagram ?

Why bother changing your car oil when you can take it to the service?

Why bother cooking your own meal when you can just go to the restaurant?

Why bother sewing your own dress when you can just go to the mall?

It's not lazyness, it's convenience. Internet just got mainstream and popular, so people lacking time, interest or skills to create their own websites just use pre-built solutions. It's how everything works in real life.

SentientNo4··on Microsoft Edge preview builds for macOS
I assume they bet on people who want to use the Chromium engine without all the Google stuff and corporate people who use macs but work with MS infrastructure (like Exchange and Sharepoint).
SentientNo4··on Society Needs an Alternative Web
I don't know a single person that uses the mark as spam option to "delete legitimate emails". In fact, almost everybody just leaves those emails in their inbox after reading them. A small fraction of users use the archive function. I do however know lots of people (me being one of them) who use mark as spam for unsolicited emails. And no, spam is not legitimate, no matter how hard online marketing people are trying to make it so.
SentientNo4··on Slack closes account of an Iranian user living in Canada
Simple: it costs them money and resources to go through the process you described, whereas it costs them almost nothing to directly close the account and send an automated message.
SentientNo4··on Introducing Firefox Monitor, Helping People Take Control After a Data Breach
In that case, all that is leaked is your email address, which is probably in every email database already. Email addresses are not terribly easy to keep secret anyway.
SentientNo4··on iOS 12 released
The "new" app is actually not so new, and it was previously called Workflow (https://www.workflow.is/). Looks like they bought it and rebranded it as Shortcuts.
SentientNo4··on Tech companies in San Francisco
I personally believe your definition is somewhat flawed. Computers are ubiquitous; my dentist's receptionist sits in front of a computer all day, using it to manage appointments and electronic communication. Does that make my dentist's office a tech company?
SentientNo4··on OS X is as old as the classic Mac OS was when it came out
> Because it's there I will type stuff in the "Search" box in Finder, expecting to filter on the filename of the current folder--instead it it searches "This Mac"

SentientNo4··on Facebook’s tracking of non-users ruled illegal again in Europe
If you run a blog, yes, the global nature of Internet ensures that. If you're running a business, you must abide the law of every jurisdiction you operate in. Companies invest lots of money and effort doing this, from operational (having a physical presence in each region) to technical (e.g. how Amazon has separate sites for each region).
SentientNo4··on Dear Apple, please fix notifications
> but I was a fan of Allen Pike's mockup of bottom navigation on the iPhone X (or, "Pro", at the time)

That looks too much like how Android navigation works. Apple will never go for something like this.

SentientNo4··on Software is a long con
Computer software does not exist in isolation; it is built upon layers and layers of abstractions, starting from hardware and ending with your framework/language of choice, resulting in a system so complex that no person alive is able to grok it in it's entirety. Bugs can be found in any of these hundreds of separate but interoperating layers, and no entity it's going to assume full liability for this entire construct.

A better analogy would be if the bridge was interconnected with every other piece of infrastructure in it's environment, from the buildings in vicinity to the ground it's built on, and all of these were in continuous shift and transformation. No sane engineer would take full responsibility for designing and building such a bridge.

And I haven't even touched on the subject of money and it's implications. "Whereas physics is math with the constraint of reality, software engineering is math with the constraint of money."

SentientNo4··on With a $1k Price, Apple’s iPhone Crosses a Threshold
But you throw your phone at the wall once a week? I think your problem requires a different solution.
SentientNo4··on Instagram is listening to you: a scary experiment
I believe the battery drain would be an even better indicator. I'm sure if an app would constantly do audio processing in the background it would dramatically lower the battery life.
SentientNo4··on AccuWeather iOS app sends location information to data monetization firm
We don't have to entirely rely on Apple doing something. The users have a voice also. I went on and left a 1 star review, explaining that the apps tracks your location and sells this data. If enough users would do this, it will send a strong signal to the developers that this shit in unacceptable.

As to what can be done to proactively prevent this kind of behaviour: eliminating the "use you location even when not using the app" option should be enough. I believe iOS 11 will have this.
