Sembiance··on Seven earth-sized planets discovered circling a star 39 light years from Earth
I feel that advancements in quantum mechanics will solve the communication problem.
Sembiance··on XMonad 0.13 released
I used XMonad for many, many years. During these years it served me well and I really loved it. However I switched to AwesomeWM about 2 years ago and couldn't be happier. I was able to easily make Awesome behave just like xmonad for parts I cared about, so the transition was pretty painless. Top 3 reasons I switched: 1. Multi monitor support is far better with awesome and it worked perfectly out of the box with my 3 displays. 2. Programs that were a bit glitchy under xmonad had no such glitches under awesome. 3. LUA configuration files make it far easier for me to customize behavior and extended it. With Xmonad's Haskell I always felt like a noob.
Sembiance··on [dead]
Sigh. Paywall.
Sembiance··on Tesla sues ex-Autopilot director for taking proprietary info, poaching employees
Sigh. Get off your high horse and actually read the article and the suit. This ex employee is said to have actually stolen gigabytes of data from Tesla and taken it with them to use at their next job. That is clearly wrong.
Sembiance··on How to build Apache modules in Swift
What do people still use Apache for? Hasn't everyone moved onto Nginx?
Sembiance··on Spinner
I run World of Solitaire, currently #1 Google result for the solitaire search term. I haven't noticed any measurable change in traffic to my site since they put this up. Probably because folks can get a much better experience on my site compared to the mini version they created. Maybe simpler website with tools such as spinners, randomizers, etc may see more of an impact.
Sembiance··on Spinner
I created and run World of Solitaire. I'm not upset at Google at all. I am where I am today thanks to Google :)
Sembiance··on A guide to using the Facebook Pixel
And you never will get rid of them. Laws are not that effective at changing the internet. It's called the Wild Wild Web for a reason.
Sembiance··on Codebender is closing down
$25,000 a month operating costs. Wow. I'd really love to see a breakdown of these costs! It would help so many other entrepreneurs out there.
Sembiance··on Pokemon Go Has FULL Access to Your Google Account
Looks like this is the case for anyone using iOS: https://www.reddit.com/r/google/comments/4saz5f/pokemon_go_h...
Sembiance··on Pokemon Go Has FULL Access to Your Google Account
Oh, it's much more than that: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/3466521?hl=en#ful...
Sembiance··on In California, Electric Cars Outpace Plugs, and Sparks Fly
In North Carolina they already do that. I pay an extra $100 a year because I own an electric car.
Sembiance··on Things they don't tell you about MongoDB
I used JIRA for a number of years on a daily basis and it is easily the worst bug tracker I have ever used. I would choose any other bug tracker I have used over JIRA any day, even BugZilla.

The connection to mongodb is that their team chose JIRA and continue to use JIRA. I was implying that by choosing such a horrible bug tracker that you must question their code for mongodb.

In retrospect I probably should have added a smiley face or not made the comment at all, since it's entirely possible they didn't have a choice in the matter and JIRA was chosen for them by a pointy haired boss. After all, I was forced to use JIRA at my previous job and the quality of code I produced and technical decisions I made were not affected by choice of bug tracker. So to any mongodb devs reading this who may have been offended, I am sorry and I feel your pain in having to use JIRA, I hope you can escape it soon :)

Sembiance··on Things they don't tell you about MongoDB
MongoDB's limitations have been well publicized over the past few years, but if you need another reason to avoid using it, take a look at which bug tracker they use (https://jira.mongodb.org/browse/SERVER-3110). JIRA. You simply can't trust code coming from a team that uses JIRA as their bug tracker.
Sembiance··on Tracking down a memory leak in Node.js and Socket.IO
A great alternative to socket.io is sock.js http://sockjs.org I've been using it in production now for a few weeks on http://worldofcardgames.com with no issues.
Sembiance··on Compute! Magazine Archive
Several months ago I took all the Compute Gazette and Run magazine issues, wrote some quick code and created a montage/wallpaper of their covers:

I then wrote some more code to try and find the most colorful game ads from the pages and came up with these wallpapers:

Sembiance··on Geometry Puzzle: Center of Square in Circle
Ahh, looks like this link explains why Quora has started sucking: http://www.businessinsider.com/the-sudden-mysterious-exit-of... Not a surprising story. So many startups pursue money and exits over building a great product. Pushing out people who made the product awesome to begin with. Now Quora can be counted among them. Sad really.
Sembiance··on Geometry Puzzle: Center of Square in Circle
Thanks for the link, but Quora won't let me read it unless I sign in, and I just don't feel like doing that on my iPad. Requiring a log in to read the page seems a bit backwards thinking to me.
Sembiance··on InternalFrameInternalFrameTitlePaneInternalFrameTitlePaneMaximizeButtonPainter
Welcome to stack overflow! Censorship here is just as bad, if not worse, than Wikipedia. As much as I despise this, it probably does make it a better resource. Still, I wish they would MOVE these to meta exchange, rather than deleting content outright.
Sembiance··on Free Flag Icons
No vector format? Don't get me wrong, these flags are appreciated, but to spend all that time making them in a bitmap format? Kinda seems like a bit of a waste, since flags seem PERFECT for vector format.
Sembiance··on Dropout Generation
Just wanted to note that I am NOT the blog author.
Sembiance··on An iOS Hacker News client that Doesn't Suck - Now for iPad
So am I.

I like it.

Two things on my wish list: 1) A 'Load More' option for the 'Home' stories list 2) A way to edit comments you have made

Sembiance··on O(n) algorithm to find longest palindromic substring w/o suffix trees
Does finding substring palindromes have any practical purpose at all? Just curious.
Sembiance··on Why I hate search
He will fit right in at Microsoft then. They call bing lots of things like "decision engine" and "doing engine", but never a "search engine".

Despite the tooltip for the magnifying glass on bing reading "Search"

Sembiance··on Why Javascript is a Joy
I misread the title as "Why Javascript is a Toy" and I thought to myself, "Oh no. Here we go again."
Sembiance··on Show HN: Worldle- 24 Hour real time boggle HTML5 hackathon game
Is this you? (https://twitter.com/#!/farhadabas) Was wondering if it was. If so, I'm gonna follow you so I can see what future projects you come up with. I try and keep up with new HTML5 stuff.
Sembiance··on Show HN: Worldle- 24 Hour real time boggle HTML5 hackathon game
This little greasemonkey script will play the game for you. http://pastebin.com/mcguLiWj
Sembiance··on How to Divide any number By 9, 90, 900 and so on in just 5 seconds
Uhm, 5 seconds? I can type X/9 into Google or my smart phone in 1 to 2 seconds.
Sembiance··on What Would The End Of Football Look Like?
One of the main points from the author is that high school and college players will sue the school for injuries sustained in football, causing insurance agencies to not insure the school, causing the death of football.

This is not possible because if this started to happen schools would require you to sign a contract before being allowed to play. The contract will forbid you from suing the school for any injuries. This will then become standard practice.

Football is not going anywhere any time soon.

Sembiance··on Double Fine raises $1m in less than 24hrs on Kickstarter
Kickstarter will take 5% of that and Amazon another 2.9%. Still, that's likely a lot less than a publisher would take :)
