SeanA208··on Tell HN: People forget that you can stick any data at the end of a bash script
https://github.com/puniverse/capsule/blob/master/capsule-uti...

This is what the (now defunkt) Capsule project prepends to get this same effect

SeanA208··on Show HN: GPT-JSON – Structured and typehinted GPT responses in Python
Very cool. Out of curiosity, for the retries why are the errors appended as system messages as opposed to appending to the user message? And in either case, would it help to prepend the error with something like “Be sure to avoid outputting something that would cause this error:”?
SeanA208··on How to Read MySQL EXPLAINs
What's the best resource for the equivalent of this page but for Postgres?
SeanA208··on GPS
You should consider reading the rest of it, it's excellent after this.
SeanA208··on Seconds before a 6.2 earthquake rattled California, phones got a warning
I'm surprised this xkcd hasn't been shared here yet. Highly relevant: https://xkcd.com/723/
SeanA208··on Apple Will Not Reinstate Epic’s Fortnite Developer Account
> How do Epic's games benefit users in meaningful ways over any of the other games on the App Store?

They benefit the users who want to play those games. Fortnite in particular is huge.

SeanA208··on Behold z, the unsung jewel that rethinks shell navigation
I use https://github.com/clvv/fasd which has all the functionality of z but with some other goodies as well.
SeanA208··on YAML: Probably not so great after all
I agree with HOCON being nice based on personal usage but I haven't seen an in depth analysis of it. This is the canonical parser for JVM based languages — https://github.com/lightbend/config, are there many other implementations that are widely used?
SeanA208··on Boss as a Service – Hire a boss, get stuff done
Interesting to see all the traction this is getting, I think that it certainly addresses a need! I stumbled upon this a few months ago when I saw this website which was made by the same folks: https://whydoiprocrastinate.com/
SeanA208··on Ask HN: Flexible, lightweight build automation/CI tool?
Buildkite (https://buildkite.com/) is so underrated and really nice! Much simpler interface than most other providers like Circle CI or TeamCity and works really well.
SeanA208··on Moto 360
This is a pretty shallow, close minded perspective.
SeanA208··on Why Google Doesn’t Have a Research Lab
The article is referencing the physical space, not the existence of a research team/department.
SeanA208··on Smartcar – Nest for your Tesla
It almost seems like this company is in existence to get acquired by Tesla, which I'm not sure will happen. I wouldn't be surprised if Tesla itself implemented everything seen in the video in the Model S's next infotainment/firmware upgrade.
SeanA208··on Forget Setting Goals. Focus on Systems Instead
This is an encouraging piece of advice to those who have set goals and had trouble achieving them. Focusing on process allows you to revel in the success you feel from "ordinary" work and gives you the encouragement you need to push through to the next day.
SeanA208··on [dead]
One of Google's main goals in fiber was to pressure other providers to do better by their customers so this is a win by Google's measure. I'd be willing to wager that Fiber would provide better service, too, because Google is likely focusing more on their gigabit internet service than AT&T as it's new to the space.
SeanA208··on IPhone 6
The point he makes about the iPhone 5 not being received well seems to contradict the entire point of the article. If the iPhone 5 wasn't received well by name alone (after all, it doesn't have an "S"), why should the iPhone 6 be?
SeanA208··on What happens when you are the doctor on the airplane?
An uncle of mine was in a situation like this once. He was sitting in first class and had to tend to someone in economy class. He decided that it would be best that he stayed by the man he was tending to so my uncle swapped seats with the man's wife. They gave him a bottle of wine for his help but I would have expected something more.
SeanA208··on Thinking the unthinkable
Reading this nearly brought a tear to my eye. I can't imagine what it's like for a mother to fear her own barely-teenage son and worry about the implications of his condition for the remainder of her life. I agree it's important to discuss mental illness and how it should be handled, but what is she suggesting should be implemented to address situations like this?
SeanA208··on Flutter (YC W12) Gesture App featured as one of the Best Apps of 2012 by Apple
I enjoy the idea of Flutter and the technology it demonstrates is quite impressive. I will say, however, it just doesn't seem like something that I could actually use on a day-to-day basis as it's faster and better on the battery to just press the play/pause or next/previous buttons on the keyboard (provided you have them). In fact, when I downloaded it, the only times I turned it on were to show my friends for novelty's sake.
SeanA208··on Try R — A new online course, for free
I really appreciate this! It's easy to follow and I was looking to learn the basics of R, this seems like the simplest way.
SeanA208··on Never Apologize For Having An Opinion — Especially When You’re Right
I think Linus Torvalds' comments may have been a driving factor in the update/apology.
