Scoundreller··on Will There Be a 7G?
that's why I said "kept on the lower G". If a new lower one pops up, that's a different story.
Scoundreller··on Will there be a 7G?
700MHz is a mixed bag for rural coverage. Great for punching through trees, but need very tall towers to overcome destructive fresnel lens losses. Higher frequencies are usually better here + more gain!
Scoundreller··on Will there be a 7G?
There’s always a gradual refarming of the spectrum into the next G. Usually the most penetrating frequencies (ie lowest) are kept on the lower G to maximize legacy support.

For a while I had my phone stick to 3G, which doesn’t support emergency alerts, because my jurisdiction kept sending them out for joint custody disputes at 3AM 1000km away. It was fine But the 3G became unbearable and they tightened up the alert criteria.

Scoundreller··on Diesel prices in U.S. top $6 a gallon for first time
A lot of the “savings” in US get eaten up through poor economy, poor driving strategy and dependence on traffic lights + stop signs instead of roundabouts + “traffic from the left/right gets priority” yield-by-default junctions.

I think cost per kilometre/lightyear/rod is close

Scoundreller··on Diesel prices in U.S. top $6 a gallon for first time
Probably doesn’t help that the ethanol that gets (increasingly) blended with gas is pretty cheap while the seed oils blended with diesel aren’t.

And the ethanol makes the fuel less valuable (energy reduction per litre) moreso than biodiesel.

> The raw cost of gas excluding pipeline and connection costs

In Ontario Canada; your gas hookup is CAD$29/month (~US$21) every month of the year, on top of a per m3 charge for delivery to you before the gas cost itself. So on a smaller or well insulated residence, capping that pipe really helps push the economics in favour of heat pumps.

> I think a dual modem would be really cool, maybe with some features targeting users in poor cell coverage/ spotty service areas.

Can already do iMessage over satellite. Most “data” is download and I predict some satellite service that sends basic broadcasts (traffic, news, Text-to-speech podcasts) squeezed into a few mbps by pointing your phone at the sky (or a small cabled antenna for around the clock use). Would love to go carrier-less.

Scoundreller··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
Hard to get a gps fix indoors. My guess is to infer it from OTA tv channel IDs and relative signal strengths. Wouldn’t need a big database and the transmitters don’t move much.

See “datacasting” for data side. Would be 1-way so hard to know how many eye/ear balls get the noise; I mean; ad.

Scoundreller··on Debugging my new network, when 10 Gigabit Ethernet Runs at 300 Megabits
Took wayyyy too many hours of tech support to find someone that clued in that I had an 8250 uart. A surprisingly crappy piece of hardware on an 486. and that’s why my $$$ 33.6k performed like garbage until I bought a 16550 card.

I also only learned like 5 years ago that crossover cables are unnecessary nowadays. The 10mbit one I made with a bad soldering iron worked surprisingly well.

Similar story from an academic that developed symptoms upon return to the US. First hospital brushed him off. Second one, got the right infectious disease doctor/professor to diagnose and treat it. Professor had as many med students/residents as he could come by to see what someone with malaria looks like. "See this man? He has malaria, don't miss it" was burned into his mind by the end.

Scoundreller··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
there were other dumb factors pushing people to do border runs, like your paperwork says "expired" but your status still being valid while being processed.

Except you had zero paperwork to show to an employer and they had no way to verify themselves. Even if an employer understood the process and accepted some proof that you submitted an application, they would have no idea if you were rejected and became out-of-status.

Scoundreller··on Characterizing Agentic Flooding of Government Services
> It's strictly better for the government to make getting benefits as hard as possible.

iunno, even when they bother to do means-testing in my jurisdiction, they exclude any slightly illiquid assets, regardless of size.

Have a paid off house (any value), paid off motor vehicle (any value) and a corporate pension plan you can start collecting in X years? No problem! You still qualify for long-term social assistance if your income is low as long as your on-paper deposits/investments are also low.

No vehicle/home/pension but your main asset is your self-funded retirement account? You gotta cash that out first. What could you possibly need that for?

I'd get it in the short-term, but the government seems to make it easiest for itself.

Scoundreller··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs
As a small-time Canadian ebay seller trying to pivot to not-US... it's not a good time.

What I find funny is that all of my packaging is re-used. I guess it's still "bad" that I'm sending non-EU packaging to EU, but at a global level, I'm way ahead. Re-using >>> re-cycling.

Scoundreller··on And then the men with guns tell you to do it anyway
Also in Canada. Ontario would blast the province for technically “abducted” children that were typically joint custody disputes.

There was one exception case where children were actively harmed, but already murdered by the time the alert went out. I suspect police couldn’t kick down the door where they were murdered because they didn’t have a warrant/sufficient cause yet: right to peace and privacy in your home but not on your phones!

The alerts are 4G/5G only, so for a while I had a shortcut that would downgrade me to 3G at night.

Despite everyone questioning the system being labelled as “with the child abductors”, there are far fewer of these alerts. Either abductions are way down, or they’ve tightened up the criteria to blast the province.

Scoundreller··on And then the men with guns tell you to do it anyway
